Overview

Crafting Manuals in Crimson Desert are key items that contain techniques and detailed information for creating new meals, elixirs, tools, weapons, armor, dyes, and more. Each manual teaches Kliff a specific set of recipes that can then be crafted at the appropriate station. Once a crafting manual has been read, the recipes it contains are permanently learned and the manual itself can be sold to any merchant for extra silver.
Crafting manuals are organized into several categories: cookingrecipes, alchemy recipes, tool blueprints, dye recipes, and equipment crafting books for weapons and armor. There are 67 equipment crafting books scattered across Pywel, with 19 of those dedicated specifically to weapon types and the remainder covering armor and accessories. Cooking and drink recipes are also plentiful, ranging from simple grilled items to elaborate multi-ingredient dishes and restorative beverages.
How to Find Crafting Manuals
Crafting manuals can be obtained through several methods throughout your journey across Pywel:
Merchants and vendors: Many crafting manuals are sold by NPCs in towns and settlements. The Hernand Equipment Shop run by Rhett carries basic weapon and armor volumes, while innkeepers and food vendors sell cooking recipes.
World exploration: Manuals are scattered across the open world. A small book symbol appears on the minimap when you are near a crafting manual, making them easier to spot. Check bookshelves, tables, and corners in every building you enter.
Theft: Some manuals found in buildings must be stolen. Equipping a Mask before taking them prevents reputation loss. Several equipment crafting books in locations like Glenbright Manor and the Scholastone Institute require stealing.
Quest rewards: Certain side quests and main story missions reward crafting manuals upon completion. The Continuing Concern quest, for example, rewards elixir items.
Research projects: Some alchemy formulas are unlocked through the research system. The Plant Combination Research project at the Pororin research institute unlocks recipes for Freya's Elixir, Meliara's Elixir, and Haiden's Elixir. It costs 120 silver and takes 18 hours to complete.
Special NPC interactions: Some manuals are obtained through conversations with specific NPCs or by completing tasks for them. The Kuku Pot is obtained through Grimnir.
Various copies of the same crafting books can be found scattered across Pywel. If you miss one in a particular location, you may find the same manual elsewhere during your travels.
Many cooking recipes are sold at inns and taverns. The Hernand Tavern sells Braised Fish, Pickled Vegetables, and Pan-Fried Rice Cakes. The Calphade Inn carries Meat Skewers, Pan-Fried Marinated Meat, and Braised Ribs. Other recipes are found in specific locations: Grilled Meat Steak sits on a table in a hut in Tomasso, Chewy Rice Cakes can be found in a building near the grocer in Hernand, and the Clear Soup recipe is earned as a reward from the "Reward for Their Sweat" main quest.
Recipe Quality Tiers
Cooking recipes in Crimson Desert have four quality levels: Modest, Basic, Filling, and Hearty. Each recipe can be upgraded by adding extra ingredients when cooking. For example, standard Grilled Meat requires one piece of raw meat and restores 80 health, while Hearty Grilled Meat costs significantly more ingredients but restores 220 health. Higher-tier versions of the same dish provide substantially better restoration and longer-lasting buffs.
If you use lower-quality substitute ingredients, you may produce a Modest-quality version instead of the intended tier. To consistently get the best results, use the exact ingredients listed and add extras when prompted to upgrade the dish quality.
Crafting Stations
Each type of crafting manual corresponds to a specific crafting station where the learned recipes can be produced:
Station | Location | Manual Types |
|---|---|---|
Smithy | Major towns (Hernand, others), Greymane Camp | Weapon books, armor books, tool blueprints, projectile recipes |
Cauldron | Hernand, Shadow's Whisper Cave, settlements | Alchemy recipes, drink recipes, dye recipes |
Open Flame / Bonfire | Camps, settlements, and the open world | Grilled cooking recipes (basic meals) |
Camps and certain settlements | Field grill and field pot recipes (advanced meals) | |
Greymane Camp (after upgrade) | Feast recipes (highest-tier meals with powerful buffs) | |
Portable (obtained via Grimnir) | Abyss object storage container with 230 slots; stores Abyss-type objects, machine parts, and contraptions |
Cooking Manuals
Cooking manuals teach Kliff how to prepare meals that restore health, spirit, and grant temporary buffs. These recipes range from simple grilled ingredients cooked over an open flame to elaborate dishes requiring multiple components and a Cooking Tool. Cooking manuals are commonly found on shelves inside buildings throughout Hernand and other towns, and are also sold by innkeepers and food vendors. Field grill dishes tend to grant Fire Resistance, while field pot dishes tend to grant Ice Resistance.
Drinks
Drink recipes are brewed at a Cauldron. All drinks require Water as a base ingredient. These beverages offer stamina restoration and elemental resistance buffs.

Field Pot Cooking
Field Pot recipes produce soups and porridges using a Cooking Tool. These meals generally require Water and multiple ingredients, making them more resource-intensive but also more effective than grilled dishes. Pot dishes provide Ice Resistance in addition to health and spirit restoration. Porridges are among the best value meals in the game due to their high health recovery relative to ingredient cost.

Alchemy Manuals
Alchemy manuals unlock elixir and potion recipes that are brewed at a Cauldron. Unlike cooking recipes that primarily restore health, alchemy recipes produce consumables with unique combat effects like negating spirit or stamina costs, boosting attack power, and increasing defense. Alchemy formulas can be found through exploration, purchased from shops, received as quest rewards, or unlocked via research projects at the Pororin and Scholastone institutes.
Palmar Pills
The Palmar Pill is one of the most important crafting items in the game. When consumed after falling in combat, it instantly revives Kliff and restores 30% of his total health. The Alchemy Formula for the Palmar Pill is located inside Shadow's Whisper Cave, a hidden cave northwest of Hernand on the west shoreline of Three Saints' Falls. Inside the cave, you will find a table covered in books with the formula, along with a Cauldron on the left side of the room that you can use to start crafting immediately.
Recipe | Ingredients | Station | Effect | How to Obtain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Medicinal Herb x15, Water x2 | Cauldron | Instantly revives and restores 30% of max Health | Shadow's Whisper Cave, northwest of Hernand | |

The Palmar Pill recipe accepts any of the following as "Medicinal Herb": Rosemary, Cotton, Lavender, Shrubby Sophora, Dunbaria, Croton, Red Croton, Marigold, Peony, Begonia, False Starwort, Dendrobium Orchid, Satintail Root, Short Horn, Ginseng, Bear's Gallbladder, Long Horn, Lily of the Valley, Pansy, Rosebay, False Hellebore, Coral Mushroom, Oakwood Mushroom, or Pine Mushroom. Red Croton grows abundantly near the witch's house in the Witchwoods and is one of the easiest herbs to farm in large quantities.
Elixirs
Elixirs provide powerful temporary combat effects. The ingredients for elixirs (Spirit Reagents, Catalysts, and similar rare components) are often obtained from defeating enemies or exploring dungeons. Lesser elixirs have shorter durations but are easier to craft, while standard elixirs offer longer-lasting effects.
Recipe | Ingredients | Station | Effect | How to Obtain |

Platinum
The Platinum alchemy formula allows you to transmute base metals into Platinum, a valuable material used in high-tier crafting and also a profitable trade commodity. The formula is found on a shelf in the Scholastone area. Unlike other alchemy recipes, Platinum is crafted at a Witch station rather than a standard Cauldron.
Recipe | Ingredients | Station | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
Gold Bar x1, Brimstone x4, Mercury x3, Holy Water x2 | Witch | Produces Platinum. Used for high-tier crafting and profitable to sell. |
Dyes
Dye recipes produce pigments used in the Dye System to customize the color of weapons and armor. Dyes are brewed at a Cauldron. All dye recipes require a combination of flowers and insect materials (beetles) that can be gathered by catching bugs in the wild. The Cauldron used for dye crafting is located in Hernand, in the building just north of the Rock, Paper, Scissors minigame spot. You can also select the "improvise" option at a Cauldron to experiment and discover new color variations.
Recipe | Ingredients | Station | Color |
|---|---|---|---|
Peony x10, Rhinoceros Beetle x3, Longhorn Beetle x3 | Cauldron | Bright red | |
Peony x10, Rhinoceros Beetle x3, Longhorn Beetle x2, Stag Beetle x1 | Cauldron | Rich red | |

Lavender x15, Blue Lavender x5, Longhorn Beetle x2, Stag Beetle x1 | Cauldron | Rich purple | |
Available for purchase from the Dyehouse in Calphade | Purchased | Bright green |
The general pattern for craftable dyes combines 10-15 flowers (Peony for reds, Dunbaria for yellows, Lavender for purples) with varying quantities of three beetle types (Rhinoceros Beetle, Longhorn Beetle, and Stag Beetle). Different beetle combinations produce different shades within the same color family. Some dye colors, like Bright Green, can only be bought from specialized vendors rather than crafted.
Equipment Crafting Books
Equipment crafting books unlock the ability to forge specific weapons and armor at the Smithy. These books are organized into volumes by equipment type. Higher-tier volumes contain more powerful recipes that require rarer resources. Tips
After reading a crafting manual, sell it to a merchant. The recipes are permanently learned and there is no reason to keep the physical item.
When you pick up a crafting manual, examine it and turn to the page with the glowing blue text to learn the recipe. Simply picking the book up is not enough; you must open it and read the highlighted page. Recipes are safe to sell after you have learned them.
Check bookshelves and tables in every building you enter. Many manuals are tucked away in houses, shops, and caves.
Prioritize the Palmar Pill crafting manual early. It allows you to craft revival items that bring you back with 30% health after falling in combat. The recipe is in Shadow's Whisper Cave, northwest of Hernand.
Higher-tier crafting book volumes become available as you explore new regions of Pywel. Advancing the main story unlocks access to regions where stronger manuals are found.
The 67 equipment crafting books are spread across the entire continent. Thorough exploration of each region is essential to collect them all.
When cooking, try adding extra ingredients to upgrade a recipe from Basic to Filling or Hearty quality. Higher-tier food provides significantly more health, spirit, and longer resistance buffs.
For elixir crafting, complete the Plant Combination Research at the Pororin Institute to unlock Freya's Elixir, Meliara's Elixir, and Haiden's Elixir. These standard-tier elixirs have longer durations than their lesser counterparts.
Red Croton is the easiest herb to farm in bulk for Palmar Pills. It grows abundantly near the witch's house in the Witchwoods.
Equip a Mask before stealing crafting books from locations like Glenbright Manor or the Scholastone Institute to avoid reputation penalties.
The "improvise" option at a Cauldron allows you to experiment with ingredient combinations and discover new dye colors without having the recipe.
