Overview
Abyss Cores are equipment accessories in Crimson Desert that grant bonus stats when installed into weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has a set number of Abyss Core slots (typically three for one-handed weapons and five for two-handed weapons). Filling these slots with cores is the primary way to customize your combat stats beyond raw weapon damage and armor defense values.
The Abyss Core system becomes available as early as Chapter 3 through the novice Witch Sylvia (added in the Day 1 patch, version 1.00.02). The full suite of core services, including crafting and recipe purchasing, unlocks during Chapter 5 of the main storywhen Kliff meets Elowenthe Witch of Wisdom. From that point on, core management remains a central part of gear optimization through the end of the game.
Abyss Cores are socketable enhancement accessories in Crimson Desert that grant additional combat bonuses when installed into equipment. Functioning as augment gems for weapons and armor, these cores slot into dedicated sockets on a piece of gear and provide passive stat boosts or special combat effects. The system is closely tied to the broader Abyss Gear framework and the Equipment Sockets and Enchanting mechanics.
Each Abyss Core belongs to a specific category (offensive, defensive, movement, or specialized) and carries a tier indicator. The "I" suffix on many cores signals the lowest tier, with higher tiers offering stronger versions of the same effect. Multiple cores can be stacked on a single weapon or armor piece, so long as there are open sockets available. Common weapons ship with three Abyss Gear sockets by default, though weapons obtained from boss battles may have a different socket layout. The strongest Abyss Cores in the game are rewards for defeating the toughest bosses.
The Witch
Abyss Cores cannot be installed or removed by the player directly. Instead, you must visit a Witcha specialized NPC who handles all core-related services. The first WitchElowenis located in The Witchwoodswest of the Hernand Highlands. There are five known Witches across PywelElowen (Witchwoods), Sylvia (north of Hernand), Lyselia (Serpent Marsh), Bari (Pailune), and Areciel (north of Tashkalp). Additional Witches are found in regions including the Serpent Marsh area south of Demeniss.
The Witch offers the following services:
Service | Cost | Description |
|---|---|---|
Install Core | Free | Place an Abyss Core into an open slot on any piece of equipment. |
Remove Core | Free | Extract an installed core without destroying it. The core returns to your inventory. |
Add Socket | Paid | Create an additional Abyss Core slot on a piece of equipment. Cost scales with the number of existing slots. |
Purchase Core Recipes | Varies | Buy recipes to craft specific Abyss Cores using materials gathered in the world. |
The Witchwoods (west of Hernand Highlands) | ||
Unknown | Serpent Marsh (south of Demeniss) |
Abyss Core services are handled exclusively by Witch merchants, not by regular blacksmiths or other vendors. Witches provide installation, extraction, socket creation, and recipe sales. Two Witch merchant locations have been confirmed.
Both Witches offer the same set of services. Players can visit whichever merchant is more convenient based on their current position in the open world.
Socket Unlocking
Before any Abyss Core can be installed, the target piece of equipment must have at least one open socket. Sockets are sealed by default on every weapon and armor piece, so the player needs to visit a Witch and select the Create Socket option. The Witch will display all eligible equipment, and the player chooses which piece to modify.
Socket creation costs silver and the price scales with each additional socket on the same item. The specific costs are as follows:
Socket Number | Cumulative Total | |
|---|---|---|
1st socket | 5 | 5 |
2nd socket | 10 | 15 |
3rd socket | 20 | 35 |
4th socket | 30 | 65 |
5th socket | 40 | 105 |
Fully socketing a five-slot two-handed weapon costs 105 silver in total. Because this is a significant investment, players should prioritize socketing their primary weapon and body armor first before spreading silver across secondary equipment.
Core Types and Effects
There are over 50 known Abyss Cores across multiple categories, each affecting a different combat stat. Cores range from basic stat boosts (with tiered versions like I, II, III) to unique effects with special combat abilities. Below is a table of confirmed cores:

This list includes cores confirmed through community databases. Additional cores and higher tiers (II, III, and beyond) exist for many categories. The wiki documents over 50 distinct core entries including all tiered variants. New cores may be added in future updates and DLC.
The "I" suffix indicates the base tier. Higher tiers (II, III, etc.) provide stronger versions of the same effect. Unique cores are rarer drops that provide distinct combat abilities rather than flat stat increases.
Core Categories
Abyss Cores fall into three broad functional categories. Understanding these categories helps players allocate cores efficiently across their gear loadout.
Category | Examples | Best Slotted Into | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
Offensive | Destruction, Gale, Insight, SwiftMomentumWind Slash | Weapons (one-handed, two-handed, ranged) | Increase attack powerattack speedcritical hit chance, and provide active damage abilities |
Defensive | Aegis, Wall of Steel, Fortification, Fortitude, Frostward, Shockward | Body armorheadshields | Reduce incoming damage, lower guard stamina costs, and provide elemental resistances |
Utility | Vigor, Gourmet, Haste, Composure, Vitality, Breath of Life | Glovesboots, armor slots | Improve stamina regenerationmovement speedfood buff effectiveness, and passive health recovery |
Weapon slots are best reserved for offensive cores since they scale directly with the weapon's base stats. Armor and accessory slots benefit more from defensive and utility cores that provide survivability. Players who keep a backup set of resistance cores (Frostward, Shockward, Flameward) can swap them in before elemental boss encounters without restructuring their entire build.
Equipment Compatibility
Different types of gear accept different core categories:
Weapons accept offensive cores (Destruction, Gale, Insight) and unique combat cores (Howling of ChaosPiercing Bloometc.).
Body Armor accepts defensive cores (Aegis, Wall of Steel) and recovery cores (Breath of Life, Vitality).
Gloves and Boots accept utility cores (Haste, Composure) and lower-tier defensive cores.
Cloaks generally do not have Abyss Core slots. Their bonuses come from elemental resistances and special effects built into the cloak itself.
Where to Find Abyss Cores
Cores can be obtained through several means:
Item | Details |
|---|---|
The most consistent source. Abyss Dungeons contain core drops as both chest loot and boss rewards. | |
Boss Drops | Certain overworld bosses and mini-bosses drop unique cores on defeat. |
Each Witch sells a selection of basic core recipes. Craft them using gathered materials. | |
Some cores are hidden in loot caches scattered across the world, particularly in hard-to-reach locations. | |
Quest Rewards | Specific side quests reward Abyss Cores upon completion. |
How to Equip Abyss Cores
Equipping Abyss Cores is a multi-step process that requires visiting Elowenthe Witch of Wisdom NPC introduced during the Chapter 5 questline ("Exposed Plot"). The process works as follows:
Create socketsSpeak to Elowen and select the "Create Socket" option. Choose the piece of equipment you want to modify. Adding a socket costs silver, and the price increases each time you add another socket to the same item.
Embed coresOnce your gear has at least one open socket, select the "Embed" option from Elowen's menu. Choose the Abyss Core you want to insert and the target socket. The core's bonus stat applies immediately.
Extract cores (optional)If you want to remove an embedded core to transfer it to different equipment, use the "Extract" option. Extraction is free, so you can swap cores between gear sets without penalty.
Cloaks and accessories cannot be fitted with Abyss Core sockets. Only weapons, armor pieces (head, bodyglovesboots), and off-hand items (shields) support socketing.
Maximum Socket Slots by Equipment Type
Each equipment type has a maximum number of Abyss Core sockets. Weapons generally allow more sockets than armor, letting you stack offensive cores on your main weapon for maximum damage output.
| Equipment Type | Max Sockets |
|---|---|
One-Handed Weapon | 3 |
Off-Hand (Shield) | 2 |
Two-Handed Weapon | 5 |
Ranged Weapon | 5 |
Head | 1 |
Body | 3 |
2 | |
Boots | 2 |
Two-handed and ranged weapons can hold up to 5 cores each, making them the best candidates for stacking a single stat like Destruction or Gale. Armor pieces have fewer slots, so prioritize defensive cores (Wall of Steel, Aegis) in those positions.
Witch of Wisdom Faction Quest
Access to the full Abyss Core system requires completing the Witch of Wisdom faction questline. This questline becomes available after finishing Chapter 5: Exposed Plot. The process works as follows:
After the Chapter 5 boss fight, a white bird delivers a letter. Reading the Unsealed Letter starts the quest "The Missing Seal."
Follow the quest marker to a farmstead that is being raided by bandits. Clear the enemies around the property.
Enter the main house through a hole in the roof. Inside, rescue a tied NPC, who turns out to be Elowenthe Witch of Wisdom.
After the rescue, Elowen relocates to her permanent residence in The Witchwoods and becomes available as a full-service Witch NPC.
While Elowen is the most well-known Witch for core services, the very first Witch the player encounters is Sylviaa novice Witch unlocked through the earlier quest "The Hermit Witch" (triggered after the "Abyss Without Balance" quest). Sylvia can embed and extract cores and create sockets, but she cannot craft cores or sell recipes. Elowen offers the full suite of services including Craft Abyss GearsBuy (recipes and Abyss Artifacts), and Sell.
Build Strategies
Offensive Build
Stack Destruction and Gale cores on your weapon to maximize damage output and attack speed. Pair with a two-handed weapon that already has a high base Attack stat. Fill armor slots with Breath of Life for passive health recovery to sustain through longer fights.
Tank Build
Focus on Wall of Steel and Aegis cores in every armor slot. Use a one-handed weapon with a shield for blocking, and slot the weapon with Vitality or Composure cores for regeneration between blocks. Plate armor amplifies this approach since its higher base defense stacks with the damage reduction from cores.
Critical Hit Build
Use Insight cores on your weapon alongside a weapon that already grants Critical Hit Chance (such as the Ceremonial Warhammer or Lambert Axe). Fill remaining weapon slots with Destruction cores to ensure crits deal high total damage.
Mobility Build
Equip Haste cores in boot and glove slots, wear cloth armor for lighter stamina consumption, and slot Gale cores on your weapon for faster attacks. This setup suits players who prefer hit-and-run tactics and rely on dodging rather than trading hits.
Managing Sockets
Adding sockets through the Witch increases the cost each time. A weapon that starts with three slots will cost progressively more to reach four, five, or higher. Plan your socket additions around your most-used equipment rather than spreading the investment across multiple weapons.
Removing cores is free, so feel free to swap cores between gear sets as needed. Keep a stock of basic offensive and defensive cores so you can reconfigure your loadout before difficult encounters.
Best Abyss Cores Tier List
The following tier list covers core recommendations across the early and mid-game. Abyss Cores become available during Chapter 5, and these picks help players establish a strong foundation. Wind SlashVigor, and Gourmet are the top priorities for early buildswhile Swift, Aegis, and Vitality become increasingly valuable as players push into harder content. The list is based on community consensus from, andplayer-tested builds.
Top Tier (High Priority)
Core | Effect | Why It's Top Tier |
|---|---|---|
![]() | Unleashes a blade of wind that cuts through enemies in a line | One of the few cores that provides a direct offensive ability rather than a passive stat bonus. The ranged damage and area coverage fill a gap in melee-focused builds. |
+35% Turning Slash Damage | Turning Slash is already one of the highest-damage melee skills. A 35% multiplier turns it into a boss-melting tool when paired with elemental imbues. | |
![]() | Food Effect Level +3 | Strengthens every meal's healing and stat buffs. Since cooking is one of the most reliable recovery methods in the game, this core amplifies an already strong system. |
Strong Tier (Recommended)
Core | Effect | Why It's Strong |
|---|---|---|
Stamina Regen +2% | Stamina governs dodging, sprinting, climbing, and gliding. Faster regeneration means fewer vulnerable moments during extended fights. | |
![]() | Attack Speed Level 1 (scales to Level 5) | Faster attacks mean more hits per combo window. At higher levels, this core noticeably shortens combo animations. |
![]() | Damage Reduction 1.0 | Flat damage reduction is universally useful. Stacking multiple Aegis cores creates a reliable defensive layer for tank builds. |
Situational Tier
Core | Effect | Best Use Case |
|---|---|---|
Ice Resistance Level 1 (scales to Level 5) | Swap in before ice-element boss encounters. Can be replaced with Flameward or Stormward for other elemental threats. | |
![]() | Health +0.2 per second | Passive health regeneration helps during exploration when you want to avoid consuming food between fights. |
Remember that cores require open sockets on your equipment. Visit a Witch NPC and select "Create Socket" to add slots before attempting to install cores. Socket creation costs scale with the number of existing slots on each piece.
Abyss Gear Tutorial (Patch 1.00.02)
The Day-1 patch (version 1.00.02) added a tutorial quest at the start of Chapter 3 to help new players learn the basics of Abyss Gears before the full system unlocks in Chapter 5. This tutorial walks the player through the concepts of sockets, embedding, and extraction using a guided example. It was added in response to feedback from reviewers who found the Abyss Gear system unclear during the pre-release review period.
The tutorial is brief and does not require the player to spend any silver. After completing it, the player receives a basic Abyss Core as a reward. The full system (with socket creationcraftingand purchasing) still requires reaching Chapter 5 and completing the Witch of Wisdom faction quest.
Tips
Visit the Witch as soon as she becomes available in Chapter 5. Even basic cores like Destruction I and Aegis I make a noticeable difference.
Do not sell Abyss Cores. They are far more valuable installed in equipment than the silver you get from vendors.
Unique cores (Howling of ChaosPiercing Bloometc.) drop from specific bosses. Check boss guides for confirmed drop tables.
If you find yourself struggling with a particular boss, swap in defensive and recovery cores temporarily. Core removal is free.
For information about the witches who craft Abyss gear, see Witches of Pywel.
Since installation and removal are free, swap cores often. Equip offensive cores for damage-heavy boss fights and switch to defensive cores when exploring dangerous areas with many enemies.
Hold onto every Abyss Core found before Chapter 5. They cannot be installed yet, but they cost nothing to socket once the first Witch unlocks.
Common weapons come with three sockets by default. Before spending gold to add more sockets, fill the existing ones and see whether the bonus is enough.
Prioritize farming bosses for rare specialized cores like Howling of Chaos and Wind Slash. These offer unique effects that cannot be replicated by stacking basic stat cores.
If two cores share the same effect type (such as Gale I and Swift I), test whether equipping both stacks the bonus before committing both sockets to speed.
Buy recipes from Witch merchants early. Crafting your own cores is often more efficient than relying on random drops, especially for commonly needed offensive and defensive types.
Check both Witch locations for different recipe stock. Elowen in the Witchwoods and the Serpent Marsh Witch may carry different selections.

How to Unlock
The Abyss Core system unlocks during Chapter 5 of the main story. At that point in the narrative, players gain access to the first Witch merchant, Elowen, who operates out of the Witchwoods west of the Hernand Highlands. Once Chapter 5 is reached, Witch merchants become permanent fixtures in the world, and the Abyss Core services they offer remain available for the rest of the game.
Before Chapter 5, any Abyss Cores found as loot drops sit in the player's inventory without a way to install them. It is worth holding onto cores picked up early, because they can all be socketed for free the moment the first Witch becomes available.
Equipment-Specific Activation Rules
Not all Abyss Core bonuses are active at all times. The game applies different activation rules depending on the equipment slot and the stat type. Understanding these rules is critical for avoiding wasted slots and building an efficient gear loadout.
Weapon Cores
All Abyss Core effects socketed into weapons (one-handed, two-handed, or ranged) are active only while that specific weapon is drawn and in use. Switching to a different weapon type deactivates all cores on the previously held weapon and activates the cores on the new one. This applies to Attack, Critical Hit Rate, Attack Speed, and all passive or special abilities.
Armor Cores
Abyss Cores socketed into body armor, headgear, and standard defensive slots are always active regardless of your weapon or combat stance. Fortification, Aegis, Vigor, and elemental resistance cores on these slots provide their bonuses at all times.
Glove and Boot Exceptions
Attack and Critical Hit Rate cores on gloves and boots only activate during unarmed combat. However, Attack Speed and Movement Speed cores on these slots remain active at all times, making them the preferred choice for glove and boot slots in most weapon-based builds. See the Abyss Gear article for a detailed breakdown table.
Shield Exceptions
Shield Defense (base stat and Fortification cores) applies passively even during two-handed weapon combat, but does not carry over to dual wield mode. All other shield Abyss Gear effects (Aegis, passive abilities, special effects) only activate when the shield is actively drawn in sword-and-shield stance. This means investing in Fortification on a shield is universally useful for one-handed and two-handed builds, while other cores only benefit active shield users.
Abyss Core Types
Over two dozen distinct Abyss Core variants have been identified across five categories: Offensive, Defensive, Movement, Utility, and Specialized. The tables below organize every core with a confirmed effect alongside its category, compatible gear slots, and a link to its dedicated article page. Cores with tier suffixes (I, II, III) indicate progressively stronger versions of the same bonus.
Offensive Cores
Offensive cores boost raw damage output, attack speed, or critical hit chance. They are the go-to choice for aggressive playstyles focused on dealing maximum damage per second.

Installation and Removal
One of the most important details about the Abyss Core system is that installation and extraction are completely free. Players can slot a core into an open socket or pull it back out at any Witch merchant without spending gold or materials. This design encourages experimentation; there is no penalty for trying different core loadouts and swapping them between pieces of gear as the situation demands.
Socket creation, on the other hand, does cost money. If a piece of equipment has fewer sockets than the player wants, a Witch can drill additional sockets into it for a fee. The cost scales with the gear's rarity and current number of sockets, so adding a fourth socket to an already well-socketed item is more expensive than opening the first extra slot.
Witch merchants also sell Abyss Core recipes. These recipes teach the player to craft specific cores using gathered materials, providing a path to obtaining cores outside of loot drops and boss battles. Recipe availability may vary between the two known Witch locations.
