Overview
Cooking is one of the most important survival mechanics in Crimson Desert. Food serves as the primary healing source throughout the game, and players can eat during combat with no cooldown or penalty. There are over 40 distinct recipes spread across multiple cooking station types, each producing dishes that restore Health, Spirit, or both, while also granting temporary elemental resistance buffs.
Recipes are discovered by exploring the world, completing quests, purchasing from vendors at inns, or by improvising at a cooking station. Cooking the same improvised combination three times automatically adds it to your permanent recipe book. This guide lists every verified cooking recipe in the game, organized by cooking method, with exact ingredients and effects.
To cook, interact with a cooking station and press X (Xbox) or Square (PlayStation) to begin preparing a dish. The cooking interface displays available recipes along with the required ingredients. Players can also select the Improvise option to experiment with ingredient combinations, similar to the freeform cooking system in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Cooking Stations
Different recipes require different cooking stations. The three main station types are found at bonfires, inside settlements, and at your personal camp after unlocking it during Chapter 3.
Station | Description | Dish Type |
|---|---|---|
Field Grill | Any open flame or bonfire. The most common cooking station, found throughout the world. | Grilled dishes, skewers, battered foods, pan-fried items |
Field Pot | A cooking pot set over a fire. Found at camps, settlements, and near most cities. | Soups, porridges, stews, braised dishes |
Cauldron | Specialized brewing station found in specific locations such as apothecaries and certain houses. | Beverages including wine, herbal teas, and honey tea |
You can also find special griddle stations in larger settlements for advanced dishes like rice cakes and meat patties, and feast preparation stations for multi-course meals. The Kuku Pot is a unique iron pot crafted at a Grimnir workbench using 5 Iron Ore and 5 Timber. Once crafted, it functions as a portable Special Pot station, allowing access to high-tier recipes like Steamed Fish anywhere in the world.
Quality Tiers
Every recipe in Crimson Desert can be produced at four quality levels. Higher tiers require additional ingredients of the same type but yield substantially better restoration values. The four quality tiers are:
Tier | Description | Example (Grilled Meat) |
|---|---|---|
Base | Standard recipe using the minimum required ingredients. | Health +80 (1 Meat) |
Filling | First upgrade tier. Requires moderate additional ingredients. | Health +120 |
Satisfying | Second upgrade tier. Requires significant extra ingredients. | Health +160 |
Hearty | Maximum quality. Costs the most ingredients but offers the best effects. | Health +220 (10 Meat) |
An important efficiency note: ten individual Grilled Meat servings from the same amount of raw meat restore 800 HP total, while a single Hearty Grilled Meat restores only 220 HP. Cooking in bulk at the base tier is more efficient for pure healing output, though higher-tier dishes grant better buffs and restore more per inventory slot.
All meat quality types (Tough, Lean, Fine, Tender, Marbled) produce identical results when cooked. There is no advantage to using expensive meat variants for basic grilled recipes.
Ingredient Categories
Recipes call for generic ingredient categories rather than specific items. Any ingredient within a category can substitute for another. For example, a recipe calling for "Grain" accepts Lentils, Barley, Wheat, Beans, or Peas interchangeably. Similarly, "Vegetable" accepts Onion, Flax, Cucumber, Turnip, or Beet.
Category | Example Ingredients |
|---|---|
Meat | Tough Meat, Lean Meat, Fine Meat, Tender Meat, Marbled Meat |
Bird Meat | Bird Meat (from hunting birds) |
Fish | Any caught fish; 1 Fish equals 2 Fish Fillet |
Seafood | Mollusk, Shellfish, Crab |
Grain | Lentils, Barley, Wheat, Beans, Peas |
Vegetable | Onion, Flax, Cucumber, Turnip, Beet |
Fruit | Berry, Raspberry, Pear, Shineberry |
Egg | Egg (gathered from nests) |
Cooking Oil | Cooking Oil (purchased from grocers) |
Salt | Salt (purchased from grocers) |
Milk | Milk (purchased from grocers or obtained from livestock) |
Water | Water (purchased from grocers; required for all pot and cauldron recipes) |

Griddle Recipes
Griddle stations are found in larger settlements and allow you to cook pan-fried dishes and rice cakes. These recipes typically require Cooking Oil or Egg alongside the main ingredients. Several of these overlap with the field grill category above but require a dedicated griddle station for the more complex preparations.

Improvisation
At any cooking station, you can select the Improvise option to manually combine ingredients without a known recipe. If you use the correct ingredients in the right quantities, you will produce the intended dish and make progress toward unlocking the recipe permanently. Cooking the same improvised dish three times automatically adds it to your recipe book.
If an improvisation attempt uses an incorrect combination, the result is a Mysterious Dish that provides subpar recovery bonuses. Failed improvisation still uses up your ingredients, so it is worth consulting recipe lists (or this guide) before experimenting blindly.
Where to Find Recipes
Recipes are scattered throughout the world and obtained from several sources. For a detailed breakdown by location, see the All Recipe Locations article. Key sources include:
Inns and Taverns - Vendors in Hernand, Pailune, and other settlements sell recipe scrolls.
Quest Rewards - Several faction quests reward cooking recipes upon completion.
Exploration - Recipes sit on tables, shelves, and in containers inside buildings throughout the world.
Improvisation - Cook the same combination three times to permanently learn it.
Greymane Camp - Lonnie at camp provides daily supplies of Chewy Rice Cakes and Porridge after unlocking the camp in Chapter 3.
Beverages
Beverages are brewed at a Cauldron and function differently from cooked food. Rather than restoring Health or Spirit, beverages restore Stamina and typically grant Ice Resistance buffs. Unlike food, beverages do not come in quality tiers. They cannot be upgraded to Filling, Satisfying, or Hearty variants.
Cauldrons are less common than bonfires or cooking pots. Key locations include the apothecary in Hernand, the Witch's House in The Witchwoods, and certain buildings throughout Pailune. Once you unlock the Greymane Camp during Chapter 3, a cauldron becomes available at your personal base.
Honey Tea is a notable beverage because it is required to begin the Scholastone Research Institute quest chain. Players must bring one Honey Tea when visiting the institute for the first time, so it is worth brewing a few in advance.
Tips and Strategies
Bulk cook at base tier for healing efficiency. Ten base Grilled Meat (800 HP total) outperforms one Hearty Grilled Meat (220 HP) from the same amount of raw meat.
Bring 100+ Grilled Meat to every boss fight. Food can be consumed during combat with no cooldown, making large stacks of cheap food the most reliable survival strategy.
Prioritize Meat Skewers early. They restore both Health and Spirit for just 1 Meat and 1 Vegetable, making them the best upgrade from basic Grilled Meat.
Hunt deer in The Witchwoods for easy Fine Meat. Deer are plentiful and drop reliable meat supplies.
Buy Salt and Cooking Oil from grocers. These are required for many advanced recipes and cannot be gathered in the wild.
Clear Soup is the go-to pot recipe. At just 1 Meat, 1 Grain, and 1 Water, it offers strong healing (180 HP base, 420 HP Hearty) with Ice Resistance Lv 2 for 5 minutes.
Fish Porridge provides the best sustained healing. With Health +240 base (up to +540 Hearty) and Ice Resistance Lv 5 for a full 10 minutes, it is ideal for extended boss encounters.
Feasts are for major challenges only. The Special Meal and its variants require pre-cooked dishes as ingredients, so save them for the hardest content.
Stock up on Water from grocers. Every single pot and cauldron recipe requires Water as a base ingredient, and it can only be purchased from grocery merchants. Buy in bulk whenever visiting a town.
Seafood recipes offer the best combined healing. Dishes like Seafood Stew and Meatball Soup that use Seafood or Fine Meat as primary ingredients tend to provide the highest combined Health and Spirit restoration along with strong Ice Resistance buffs.
