Overview
Tools in Crimson Desert are utility Equipment used for farming, Fishing, Mining, logging, and general fieldwork throughout the continent of Pywel. While some tools can function as improvised weapons with minor Attack values, their primary purpose is resource gathering and interaction with the environment. Tools are essential for collecting the raw materials needed to refine weapons, armor, and accessories.
Tools can be purchased from Provisioner Vendors in towns such as Hernand and refined at Smithies to improve their effectiveness. Each tool occupies one inventory slot, and they remain in the inventory when equipped. Players equip tools through the Equipment Wheel (hold D-Pad Left on controller or press F3 on PC), and only one tool can be active at a time.

Key Tools
Pickaxe
The Pickaxe is one of the most important tools in the game. It is used to mine ore deposits, which appear as light-blue highlighted rocks on mountain walls and cliff faces throughout Pywel. Ore is a critical material for Refinement upgrades on weapons, armor, and accessories. The Pickaxe features the Mining Mastery effect, which improves mining efficiency. Players can purchase it from the Provisioner's Shop in Hernand. As an alternative to the Pickaxe, the Force Palm skill can also destroy ore deposits, though the dedicated tool is more efficient for regular gathering runs.
A unique alternative mining tool, the Mining Knuckle Drill, can be obtained by defeating Marni's Excavation, a hidden boss fight located in Karin Quarry. This weapon doubles as both a combat tool and a mining implement.
Logging Axe
The Logging Axe is used for felling trees to collect wood, another essential material for Crafting and Refinement. Like the Pickaxe, it can be purchased from the Provisioner's Shop in Hernand. The Logging Mastery effect improves woodcutting speed. Players who prefer combat shortcuts can use the Turning Slash skill to fell trees instead, though the axe remains more practical for sustained gathering.
Fishing Rod
The Fishing Rod enables players to catch fish from rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water. Fish are used in Cooking recipes. There are multiple ways to obtain a rod:
Observation: Early in the story, observe NPCs fishing near the starting area. Watch them until the observation progress bar completes, which unlocks fishing knowledge and grants a basic rod.
Vendor purchase: Buy a rod from Alden at the Hernand Provisioner for 15 copper coins, or from Hailard at the Rodbel Fishing Dock for 15 copper coins (the dock becomes available after clearing a nearby bandit camp).
Provisioner display: Visit the Hernand Provisioner shop and observe a fishing rod on display to trigger the learning sequence.
To fish, find deep water, equip the rod, and aim at the glowing blue circles on the water's surface. When a fish bites (indicated by a splashing sound and controller vibration), hook it by pressing the fire button. Reel the fish in by pulling opposite to its swimming direction and rotating the right stick when it stops thrashing. Pulling during a thrash will snap the line. Upgraded rods offer better reeling efficiency. Players can also catch fish bare-handed by wading into rivers and interacting with visible fish directly, though this bypasses the fishing minigame entirely.
Lantern
The Lantern provides portable illumination for nighttime exploration. Crimson Desert features a full day-night cycle, and visibility drops significantly after dark. Equipping the Lantern ensures safe navigation through caves, forests, and other dark environments. Unlike most other tools, it has no Attack value and cannot be refined.
Farming Tools
Several tools are designed for agricultural tasks such as tending fields and managing crops. The Hoe, Pitchfork, Rake, Wooden Rake, Large Farming Scythe, Broom, Mallet, and Shovel all support various farming and maintenance activities. These tools have modest Attack values (6 to 10) if used as improvised weapons, but their primary purpose is supporting the game's life skill systems. All farming tools are refinable at a Smithy.
Inventory and Usage Tips
Do not discard tools. Each tool takes up one inventory slot and stays in your inventory when equipped. Since fast travel options are limited, finding replacement tools can be a significant detour. Keep all tools at all times.
Small Bags can be purchased from vendors for 50 coppers each, adding one extra inventory slot per bag. Buy a few early on to accommodate your growing tool collection.
Only one tool can be equipped at a time. Access the Equipment Wheel (hold D-Pad Left / press F3 on PC) to switch between tools quickly.
The Pickaxe and Logging Axe are the two most critical tools for Refinement material gathering. Purchase both from the Provisioner's Shop in Hernand as early as possible.
Better pickaxes are required to mine rarer ore deposits as you progress into higher-level regions.
Tools cannot be used while another weapon is drawn. Sheathe your weapon before switching to a tool via the Equipment Wheel.
