Overview
The Contribution System is a regional currency mechanic in Crimson Desert. As players complete quests, turn in bounties, clear enemy camps, liberate strongholds, and help local residents, they earn Contribution XP for that region's faction. The XP fills a progress bar visible on the HUD. Each time the bar fills and the player reaches a new Contribution level, they receive a Contribution Point, which is a spendable currency.

Contribution Points are spent at Contribution Shops, specialized vendors found in each region that sell exclusive armor, weapons, accessories, horse bardings, banners (usable as two-handed weapons), and camp workers. The system is entirely regional: points earned in Hernand can only be spent at the Hernand Contribution Shop, not in Demeniss or other regions. Players cannot bank a large amount of points in one region and then spend them elsewhere.
The Contribution system in Crimson Desert is a region-based reputation mechanic that tracks your standing with each major faction across the continent of Pywel. Every helpful action you perform within a region, from completing quests to giving alms to beggars, earns Contribution experience points that fill up a progress bar. Each time the bar reaches 100 points, you gain one Contribution level, which awards one spendable Contribution Point.
Contribution Points are spent at regional Contribution Shops to purchase unique equipment, cosmetics, and faction-themed items. Both your Contribution level and the items available at the shop are region-specific, so you cannot bank points in one region and spend them in another.
How Contribution Points Work
Contribution operates on a level-up system. Every action that awards Contribution XP (completing faction quests, turning in bounties, clearing camps, discovering secrets, defeating bosses) adds to a regional progress bar. The current point total is visible in the top right corner of the map screen. When the bar fills, the player gains one Contribution level and receives one Contribution Point. That point is then available to spend at the region's Contribution Shop.
If a player loses Contribution level (for example, through criminal activity), they keep any points already earned but cannot gain new ones until they re-earn the lost level. Points are permanent once earned and are not consumed by losing standing.
The fastest way to accumulate Contribution XP is through faction quests and bounty turn-ins. Bounties in particular are short tasks that reward a large amount of Contribution XP relative to time spent, and they become available starting in Chapter 2. Other reliable sources include liberating enemy-occupied camps and completing commissions posted on regional notice boards.
Earning Contribution
Multiple activities award Contribution XP within a region. The general rule is that any task performed on behalf of a faction or its residents awards XP toward the next Contribution level.
Activity | Details |
|---|---|
Story missions tied to a region's faction provide large Contribution XP gains. These are typically the most rewarding single sources of XP. | |
Dedicated faction quest lines found under the Factions tab in the Journal. These build standing and unlock narrative branches while rewarding significant Contribution XP. | |
Bounties | Wanted targets that can be captured dead or alive. Bounties are the fastest and easiest way to earn Contribution Points because they are short and reward large amounts of XP. They unlock in Chapter 2. |
Optional requests from NPCs throughout the region. Examples include cooking food for Renee's Request or gathering materials for local residents. | |
Commissions | Requests posted on regional notice boards, such as Turnali's Request or Rhett's Request. These are quick tasks that provide steady Contribution XP. |
Territory Liberation | Clearing enemy-occupied settlements and strongholds (e.g., Root Hold) earns large amounts of standing with the ruling faction. Defeating the occupying forces and their commanding boss frees the territory. |
Freeing Captives | Rescuing prisoners and slaves from bandits awards Contribution XP. This includes freeing Pailunese refugees from bandit camps and other hostage situations found during exploration. |
Winning fight clubs, arm wrestling, horse races, and other settlement activities awards small amounts of Contribution XP. | |
Giving Alms | Donating copper coins to beggars sitting in city streets grants exactly 1 Contribution XP per coin given. While slow, this method is useful for topping off the last few points before a level-up. |
Eavesdropping | Listening to NPC conversations can reveal hidden quests. Completing these quests grants Contribution XP when finished. |
You can earn Contribution experience points through a wide variety of activities within each region.
Activity | Contribution XP | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Completing faction quests | High (varies by quest) | The fastest and most reliable source of Contribution XP |
Turning in bounties | High | Short objectives with generous payouts |
Completing side quests | Moderate to High | Any quest tied to a regional faction awards Contribution |
Clearing hostile camps | Moderate | Defeating bandits and enemies at strongholds |
Moderate | Repeatable tasks from regional NPCs | |
Giving alms to beggars | +1 XP per copper given | Cheap but very slow; give 1 Copper to a beggar for 1 XP |
Freeing slaves and captives | Moderate | Found during certain quests and world encounters |
Contribution Shops
Each region has a Contribution Shop where players spend their accumulated Contribution Points on exclusive gear and services. Nothing in these shops can be purchased with Silver; they accept only Contribution Points as currency. The inventory includes items that are completely unavailable from regular merchants.
The Hernand Contribution Shop is located inside Hernand Castle and is operated by a vendor named Haldwin. To reach Haldwin, players must first gain entry to the castle (which requires wearing Hernandian Attire during the Mystical Key quest) and then find the shop inside one of the towers. Other regions have their own Contribution Shop in a central settlement, though some require story progression before they become accessible.
Hernand Contribution Shop Inventory
The following table lists all items available from Haldwin at the Hernand Contribution Shop, along with their point costs.
Item | Cost (Points) | |
|---|---|---|

The Bolton Plate Armor and Bolton Plate Cloak are great early investments for players who want decent starting equipment, since the combined cost of 13 points is achievable within the first several hours of play. The Hernand Ceremonial Guard Armor set represents a significant upgrade but requires more sustained effort. For late-game goals, the Hernandian Signet and Hernandian Crown are the most expensive items at 65 and 70 points respectively.
Shop Item Categories
Across all regions, Contribution Shops stock the following types of items:
Category | Description |
|---|---|
Region-exclusive armor sets with unique stats and appearance. Includes body armor, headgear, gloves, and footwear. | |
Faction-themed cloaks that provide defense bonuses. Multiple tiers are typically available at different point costs. | |
Accessories and Signets | Rings, signets, and crowns that provide passive bonuses. These tend to be the most expensive items in each shop. |
Horse Bardings | Decorative and functional horse armor that changes the appearance of the player's mount. |
Banners | Faction banners that double as usable two-handed weapons in combat. These are massive, heavy flags representing the local faction. |
Camp Workers | Hire workers for the Greymane Camp to gather supplies, ingredients, and Silver automatically. |
Refund Policy
Items purchased from a Contribution Shop can be sold back to the same shop for a full refund of the Contribution Points spent. This lets players recombine their point total freely, experimenting with different gear without permanently losing points. If a new piece of equipment becomes available or a player's build changes, they can simply sell back old purchases and reallocate their points.
How They Work

Each region has a dedicated Contribution Shop where you can spend your accumulated Contribution Points on exclusive equipment. The shopkeeper only appears or becomes accessible after you have reached a certain point in the main story for that region. Items in the shop cost varying amounts of Contribution Points, with cosmetic items generally being cheaper and powerful equipment or prestige items costing significantly more.
Demeniss Contribution Shop
The Demeniss Contribution Shop becomes available after reaching the Demeniss region in the main story.
Item | Cost (Points) | Type |

Demeniss Ceremonial Cloak | 19 | |
Demenissian Barding | 23 | Horse Equipment |

Pailune Contribution Shop
You must liberate Pailune as part of the main story before gaining access to its Contribution Shop.

Crime and Contribution
Criminal actions decrease Contribution with the affected region's faction. The wanted system directly impacts Contribution XP totals. Getting caught committing crimes (pickpocketing, theft, assault) not only triggers guard pursuit and potential imprisonment but also damages the player's standing with local NPCs.
Contribution XP penalties scale with the severity of the offense. Specific penalties include:
Crime | Contribution XP Penalty | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Stealing an item | -5 XP per item | Applied even if the player is not caught. Every stolen item reduces Contribution regardless of detection. |
Assault on an innocent NPC | -30 XP | Immediate penalty upon killing or seriously injuring a civilian. |
Petty theft (pickpocketing) | -5 XP | Triggers guard pursuit if detected, but the XP penalty applies regardless. |
A critical detail is that stealing items always decreases Contribution whether the player is caught or not. Even if nobody witnesses the theft, the penalty is applied. This means players who rely on stealing for income or resources will see their Contribution erode over time. However, the -5 XP penalty per item is relatively small and can be offset by completing a single quest or bounty.
Rebuilding Lost Reputation
Rebuilding lost reputation requires completing additional quests and activities for the affected faction. Low Contribution in a region restricts NPC interactions and limits access to certain towns or services. Some equipment grants attack bonuses tied to negative notoriety or wanted level, creating a strategic choice: maintaining good standing for vendor access and allied support, or embracing outlaw status for combat bonuses. Players who want to explore both paths can use the crime system's fine payment mechanic to reset their wanted status without losing all accumulated Contribution.
Certain criminal actions reduce your Contribution with a region. Stealing from strongboxes at the bank deducts 5 Contribution points per item stolen. Attacking faction members or committing crimes in a region can also lower your standing. Be mindful of your actions if you are trying to build reputation with a particular faction.
Regional Factions
Each of the regions of Pywel has its own faction identity and Contribution track. Building reputation in one region does not directly affect standing in others, encouraging players to invest time in each region's community.
Region | Notes |
|---|---|
Starting region. Multiple sub-factions including House Celeste and the Goldleaf Merchants. Most accessible for early Contribution building, with bounties and commissions available shortly after the prologue. | |
Central political and military hub. Multiple noble houses compete for power following the King's disappearance. Complex faction web with overlapping Contribution opportunities. | |
Territory governed by Marquis Stefan Lanford. The Calphade Rebellion questline heavily impacts standing here. Calphade is a named territory within the broader regional structure. | |
Technologically advanced region. Merchant and engineering guilds influence standing. | |
Northern homeland of the Greymanes. Standing affected by the conflict with the Black Bear Forces. The Contribution Shop here becomes accessible after liberating the region during the main story. | |
Southern desert region. Lawless territory with fewer formal factions. |
Each region in Pywel tracks Contribution independently. Your standing with Hernand has no effect on your standing with Demeniss or Pailune. This means you need to invest time in each region separately if you want to unlock the Contribution Shop items in every area.

Companion Dispatch
The Contribution System connects to the Freesword Dispatch mechanic. Players can send companion Greymanes on timed missions that yield resources and may contribute to Contribution level. This system operates passively, allowing players to gather resources and build reputation even while engaged in other activities.
How Contribution Affects NPC Behavior
Your Contribution level in a region directly affects how the local population treats Kliff. At high Contribution, townsfolk will treat you as a hero. NPCs may open previously locked doors, hand you exclusive ceremonial armor, or offer special dialogue and quests that are unavailable to players with low reputation.
Conversely, if you commit crimes and lose Contribution, NPCs become hostile and distrustful. Stealing from strongboxes costs 5 Contribution per stolen item, and killing an innocent NPC results in an immediate 30-point penalty. Guards become more aggressive and merchants may refuse to trade at all until you restore your standing through positive actions.
One of the simplest ways to earn Contribution is to give alms to beggars. Tossing a single Copper Coin to a beggar grants exactly 1 Contribution XP. While this is slow compared to completing quests or clearing camps, it is completely free and can be done repeatedly whenever you pass through a settlement.
Relationship to Other Systems
Contribution interacts with several other game systems. The Knowledge System tracks discoveries that can unlock new Contribution opportunities. Camp upgrades at the Greymane Camp benefit from faction-provided materials, and hiring camp workers through Contribution Shops directly supports camp productivity. The crafting system relies on vendor access that Contribution unlocks. The Rumor System may yield quests that increase Contribution level. Together, these systems create a feedback loop where exploration and community engagement expand the player's available tools and resources.
The faction reputation system is closely related but distinct from Contribution. While Contribution measures the player's accumulated good deeds and translates to spendable points, faction reputation reflects the player's ongoing relationship status with regional factions and affects dialogue options, quest availability, and NPC attitudes. Both systems reward similar activities and reinforce each other.
Faction Banners
One of the most unique items available in Contribution Shops is the Contribution Banner. These are massive flags representing the regional faction that can be physically wielded as two-handed weapons in combat. While not the strongest weapons in the game, they are an impressive visual statement and demonstrate your dedication to a particular faction. Each banner costs 30 Contribution Points.
Tips for Farming Contribution
Efficiently building Contribution allows players to access the best gear from each region's shop as early as possible. The following strategies help maximize Contribution XP gain:
Tip | Details |
|---|---|
Prioritize bounties. | Bounties are the fastest and easiest method to earn Contribution Points. They are generally short tasks with large XP rewards relative to time spent. Once bounties unlock in Chapter 2, check the Journal regularly for new targets. |
Complete commissions when passing through towns. | Notice board requests like Turnali's Request and Rhett's Request often require items or tasks near where the player is already going. Picking them up passively adds steady XP. |
Liberate every stronghold you find. | Clearing enemy camps and freeing captives provides large chunks of Contribution XP. Liberating a territory also opens up that area for safer travel and may restore access to local merchants. |
Use beggars for small top-offs. | Tossing a single copper coin to a beggar in any city street grants exactly 1 Contribution XP. This is not efficient for large amounts, but if you are just a few points short of the next level, it is a quick way to reach the threshold. |
Sell back shop items when upgrading. | Because the Contribution Shop offers full refunds, players can buy cheaper early gear like the Bolton Plate set and later sell it back to fund more expensive purchases like the Hernand Ceremonial Guard set. |
Avoid unnecessary crimes. | Stealing items costs -5 Contribution XP per item, even if undetected. This penalty is small individually but adds up quickly for habitual thieves. If you need to steal, plan to offset the loss with a bounty or quest completion afterward. |
Focus on faction quests and bounties. These are short objectives that reward a large amount of Contribution XP compared to the time investment.
Complete commissions in each region. Commissions are repeatable and provide steady Contribution gains alongside other rewards like inventory bags.
Avoid stealing from banks or strongboxes if you care about Contribution. Each stolen item costs 5 Contribution points, which can quickly undo hours of progress.
Giving alms to beggars is technically the cheapest method (1 Copper = 1 XP), but it is extremely slow and should only be used to top off a level when you are close to the next threshold.
Clearing enemy camps and bandit strongholds throughout the region provides moderate Contribution alongside combat experience and loot.
Save up for the prestige items like the Demenissian Signet (65 points) and Crown (70 points) if you want the ultimate late-game cosmetics.
