Overview
Critical Rate (also called Critical Hit Chance) is a secondary stat in Crimson Desert that determines the probability of landing a critical strike. When a critical hit occurs, the attack deals bonus damage based on the Critical Damage modifier. Critical hits are indicated by a distinct visual flash and larger damage numbers on screen.
Critical Rate is not upgraded through the skill tree dials. It comes from Abyss Cores and, in some cases, inherent weapon properties.
How to Increase Critical Rate
Source | Effect |
|---|---|
Insight Abyss Core | The Insight Abyss Core directly increases Critical Hit Chance. Available in multiple tiers (I, II, III). |
Weapon properties | Some weapons have inherent Critical Hit Chance bonuses that are visible in the weapon's stat screen. |
Passive skills | Certain passive abilities learned through the skill tree may increase crit chance. |
Critical Rate and Ice Element
Critical Rate has a particularly strong interaction with the Ice element. Ice-imbued weapons gain a 40% elemental modifier that applies specifically to critical hits. This means that as your Critical Hit Chance rises, Ice damage scales disproportionately well. Community testing has found that Ice becomes mathematically superior to Fire once Critical Hit Chance exceeds roughly 40%, because the per-crit Ice bonus outweighs Fire's consistent burn damage at that threshold.
Critical Rate and Attack Speed
Critical Rate synergizes well with Attack Speed. Every individual attack rolls against your crit chance independently, so landing more hits per second means more critical strikes per second. Fast weapons like daggers generate critical hits at a higher frequency than slow weapons at the same Critical Rate percentage. This makes stacking Insight cores alongside Gale or Swift cores a strong combination for sustained DPS.
Enemy Defense Interaction
Critical hits multiply damage before the enemy's defense mitigation formula runs. This is an important detail because it means critical strikes are proportionally more effective against low-defense targets. Against heavily armored bosses, pairing Critical Rate with Armor Penetration effects gives the best returns; the penetration lowers effective defense, and the crit multiplier then amplifies the already larger base damage that passes through.
Tips
Socket Insight cores into your gear to steadily raise your crit chance as you find higher-tier versions.
Pair Critical Rate with Attack Speed for more frequent crits, or with Armor Penetration for bigger individual crits.
If you run an Ice element build, hitting 40%+ crit chance is the breakpoint where Ice overtakes Fire in raw damage output.
Check weapon stat screens when swapping gear. Some weapons come with built-in crit bonuses that save you a core slot.
