Building Materials
Building materials in Starsand Island encompass all the raw and processed resources used for construction, tool crafting, home building, furniture making, and equipment upgrades. Materials are gathered from the surface island and the underground Moonlit Forest, then processed at various crafting stations into usable forms. This page catalogs every major building material category, where to find raw inputs, and how to process them.
Wood
Wood is the most commonly used building material in the early and mid game. There are five wood types, each harvested from different trees and requiring progressively better axes.

Wood Type | Source Tree | Axe Required | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
Softwood | Common trees (palms, small deciduous) | Stone Axe (starter) | Surface, everywhere |
Hardwood | Banyan trees (large, dark trees) | Impact Axe (Apprentice Crafter) | Surface, around Hopeland and forests |
Bamboo | Bamboo groves | Impact Axe | Surface, specific groves |
Premium Wood | White Fig trees | Level 3 Axe (Intermediate Crafter) | Surface, scattered locations |
Meteor Wood | Meteor trees in the deep Moonlit Forest | High-tier axe | Moonlit Forest only |
Softwood is the bread-and-butter material of the early game. You need hundreds of pieces for planks, Charcoal production, and basic construction. Banyan trees also drop Softwood and Hardwood together when chopped. White Fig trees are particularly valuable because they drop Softwood, Hardwood, and Premium Wood all at once.
Processed Wood (Cutter)
Raw wood must be processed into planks and boards at the Cutter before it can be used in most recipes. The Cutter has three tiers, each unlocking additional products.
Product | Input | Cutter Tier |
|---|---|---|
Softwood Plank | Softwood | Cutter I |
Bamboo Board | Bamboo | Cutter I |
Bamboo Strip | Bamboo | Cutter I |
Hardwood Plank | Hardwood | Cutter II |
Premium Wood Plank | Premium Wood | Cutter III |
Meteor Plank | Meteor Wood | Cutter III |
The Cutter processes materials over time (not instantly). Building two Cutters running in parallel halves your wait time for planks. The Cutter I blueprint is included in the free Equipment Blueprint Pack from the General Store.
Ores and Metals
Metal ores are mined primarily in the Moonlit Forest. Each ore type requires a specific pickaxe tier and is found in specific zones at different depths. Raw ores are smelted into ingots and alloys at the Furnace.
Ore | Location | Pickaxe Required | Smelts Into |
|---|---|---|---|
Copper Ore | Surface, Evernight Forest | Stone Pickaxe | Copper Ingot |
Tin Ore | Evernight Forest, Gate of Life | Stone Pickaxe | Tin Ingot |
Iron Ore | Dreamfall Garden | Bronze Pickaxe | Iron Ingot |
Gold Ore | Crystalith Hideout | Iron Pickaxe | Gold Ingot |
Quartz | Crystalith Hideout | Iron Pickaxe | Glass Brick (Furnace) |
Fluorite | Crystalith Hideout, various zones | Iron Pickaxe | Radiant Core (Furnace) |
Magnetite | Grain Haven | Gold Pickaxe | Magnet |
Primorite | Mural Valley | Gold Pickaxe | Primorite Ingot |
Moonstone | Darkwater Shore | Primorite Pickaxe | Lunar Core |
Aurorite | Serenity's Rest | Primorite Pickaxe | Aurorite Ingot |
Oilstone | Moonlight Meadow | Aurorite Pickaxe | Oil (processed) |
Starflare Crystal | Moonlight Meadow | Aurorite Pickaxe | Starflare Core |
Diamond | Deep Moonlight Meadow | Aurorite Pickaxe | Various endgame items |
The general smelting ratio is 3:1 for common ores and 5:1 for rare ores. Copper Ingots specifically require 4 Copper Ore plus 1 Charcoal. For detailed smelting recipes, see the Furnace article.
Metal Sheets (Cutter)
The Cutter also processes metal ingots into sheets, which are used in different recipes than raw ingots.
Product | Input | Cutter Tier |
|---|---|---|
Copper Sheet | Copper Ingot | Cutter I |
Iron Sheet | Iron Ingot | Cutter II |
Gold Sheet | Gold Ingot | Cutter II |
Copper Sheets are used in early-mid game recipes including the Ore Analyzer (8 Hardwood + 2 Copper Sheets). Iron Sheets are used extensively in building construction and vehicle parts.
Stone and Glass
Stone and glass are fundamental construction materials used in building structures, bus stops, and various infrastructure.

Material | Source | Processing |
|---|---|---|
Stone | Surface rocks, mining in the Moonlit Forest | Used raw or smelted into Stone Brick at the Furnace |
Stone Brick | Furnace I (Stone + Charcoal) | Primary structural material for walls, foundations, and bus stops |
Glass Brick | Furnace I (Quartz + Charcoal) | Intermediate product; cut into Glass Panes at the Cutter |
Glass Pane | Cutter I (Glass Brick) | Used in windows, structures, and building projects |
Clay | Digging near water sources | Used in pottery, bricks, and decorative items |
Stone Brick and Glass Pane are the primary construction materials for major building projects. Rebuilding the Starsand Station for fast travel, for example, requires 10 Stone Bricks and 5 Glass Panes per bus stop.
Textiles
Textile materials are processed through the Spinning Wheel and Loom into fabrics, rope, and thread used in clothing, tools, and equipment.
Material | Source | Processing Station | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
Fiber | Tall grass and bushes (surface) | Spinning Wheel / Loom | Hemp Rope, Linen |
Wool | Rabbits, Sheep (ranching) | Loom | Flannel, colored fabrics |
Fur | Cows (Intermediate Rancher) | Loom | Leather |
Premium Wool | Adult rabbits and sheep | Loom | Velvet |
Hemp Rope (from the Spinning Wheel) is used in tools, bridges, and construction recipes. Fabrics from the Loom are processed into clothing at the Sewing Table. For a complete list of fabric types and colored fabrics, see the Loom article.
Specialty Materials
Several processed materials do not fit neatly into the wood, metal, or textile categories but are critical for advanced crafting.
Material | Source | Used For |
|---|---|---|
Charcoal | Charcoal Kiln (Softwood + Fiber) | Furnace I fuel, crafting ingredient |
Coal | Mined in Moonlit Forest (Dreamfall Garden+) | Furnace II/III fuel, industrial recipes |
Salt | Charcoal Kiln (Salt Brick + Fiber) | Cooking ingredient, Pickling Jar recipes |
Bronze | Furnace I (Copper Ingot + Tin Ingot) | Bronze Pickaxe, mid-game tools |
Alloy | Furnace II (Iron Ingot + other metals) | Advanced tools and equipment |
Eternal Alloy | Furnace III (rare metals) | Expert-tier tools (Electric Drill, Chainsaw) |
Radiant Core | Furnace I (Fluorite) | Cutter upgrades, special crafting |
Starflare Core | Furnace II (Starflare Crystal) | Endgame equipment |
Lunar Core | Furnace III (Moonstone) | Top-tier equipment and magical items |
Flamecore Ingot | Furnace III (Flamecore) | Endgame weapons and tools |
Material Progression
Building materials follow a clear progression that mirrors the Crafter profession and Moonlit Forest depth. Understanding the order helps you plan which materials to stockpile.

Tips
Softwood Planks and Copper Ingots are the two most consumed materials in the early game. Keep a large stockpile of both.
The free Equipment Blueprint Pack from the General Store gives you the Furnace I, Cutter I, and Charcoal Kiln. Grab it as soon as possible.
Build multiple Cutters to process planks and sheets in parallel. The Cutter is the biggest time bottleneck in material processing.
Stone Bricks and Glass Panes are needed in bulk for bus stop construction. If you plan to rebuild the Starsand Station network, start stockpiling early.
White Fig trees drop all three surface wood types at once (Softwood, Hardwood, Premium Wood), making them the most efficient trees to chop.
Use the Ore Analyzer on raw ores before smelting. The 5 to 10% bonus drop chance can yield extra rare materials over time.
Keep fiber in stock at all times. It is used for Charcoal production, rope crafting, textile production, and dozens of other recipes.
