Overview

Oilstone is one of the rarest and most valuable mining resources in Starsand Island. Found deep within the Moonlit Forest, it serves as a critical ingredient for endgame crafting at Furnace III. Almost every top-tier smelting recipe requires Oilstone, including Flamecore Ingot, Aurorite Ingot, Lunar Core, and Eternal Alloy. Because of its limited spawn locations and the tools needed to harvest it, Oilstone is often the bottleneck resource that gates players from reaching the highest equipment tiers.

How to Mine Oilstone

Oilstone deposits require the Impact Hammer or a higher-tier pickaxe to mine. The basic pickaxe and Impulse Pickaxe cannot break Oilstone nodes. The Impact Hammer blueprint is available from Zerine's General Store after completing the Junior Crafter certification, and the tool itself is crafted at a Worktable II.

Oilstone nodes have a distinct bright red-orange color that makes them stand out against the darker cave walls. They are embedded in cave walls and floors, and each node yields a small number of Oilstone pieces per harvest.

Where to Find Oilstone

Harvest Yard Cave (Primary Location)

The main Oilstone farming location is a cave at the Harvest Yard Camp area within the Moonlit Forest. This cave contains the most abundant and concentrated spawn of Oilstone deposits in the game, making it the most efficient farming spot by far.

To reach the Harvest Yard cave:

1. Enter the Moonlit Forest and progress past the Crystalith boss area.

2. Pass through the bronze gate (requires clearing vine barriers and meeting access requirements).

3. Navigate through the forest until you reach Harvest Yard Camp.

4. Look for the cave entrance near the camp. Drop down carefully below the bubble bridge to find the cave with the spirit and Oilstone deposits.

The cave's advantage is its high node density relative to travel time. You can mine multiple Oilstone nodes in a single run before needing to leave, which minimizes downtime compared to scattered nodes found deeper in the forest.

Alternative Sources

Beyond the Harvest Yard cave, Oilstone can occasionally be found in:

• Treasure chests scattered throughout the Moonlit Forest, though this is unreliable and yields small quantities.

• Gifts from certain romanceable NPCs who may give Oilstone as a random gift once your relationship is high enough.

• Deeper Moonlit Forest zones with dark stone layers, though these are harder to reach and less concentrated than Harvest Yard.

Furnace III Recipes Using Oilstone

Oilstone is processed at Furnace III, the highest-tier smelting station. Every major endgame ingot and alloy requires Oilstone as a component. Below is a summary of the Furnace III products.

Eternal Alloy sits at the top of the crafting chain. It requires Flamecore Ingots, Alloy, and Coal, all of which trace back to Oilstone at some point. This makes Oilstone the single most important resource for endgame progression.

Why Oilstone Matters for Endgame

The importance of Oilstone cannot be overstated for players pushing into the late game. Here is why it matters:

• Tool progression: The Aurorite Pickaxe, crafted from Aurorite Ingots, is the best mining tool in the game. Without it, certain high-tier nodes in the deepest forest zones remain inaccessible.

• Equipment upgrades: Top-tier weapons and armor all require Furnace III products that depend on Oilstone.

• Vehicle crafting: Advanced vehicles and mechanical components need Eternal Alloy or its sub-components.

• Automation: High-level Robot Terminal upgrades and endgame mechanical recipes use refined Oilstone products.

Farming Tips

• Clear enemies first. Cave interiors often have tighter enemy spawns near Oilstone deposits. Kill nearby hostiles before you start mining to avoid getting interrupted.

• Bring healing items. The deeper areas of the Moonlit Forest deal significant damage. Stock up on recovery items before heading out.

• Respawn cycle. Oilstone nodes respawn after a set amount of in-game time. Plan to revisit the Harvest Yard cave every few in-game days for another round of mining.

• Combine with Gold Ore runs. Since both Gold Ore and Oilstone are found in the Moonlit Forest, combine your farming trips to maximize efficiency. Mine gold at Grain Haven and Mural Valley, then swing by Harvest Yard for Oilstone.

• Stockpile early. Start accumulating Oilstone as soon as you have the Impact Hammer, even if you cannot use it yet. When you unlock Furnace III, you will burn through your supply quickly.
