Flower Species
Starsand Island has four plantable flower species, plus wild flowers found in the Moonlit Forest. Flower seeds are purchased from the Happiness Seed Shop run by Graminova.

Species | Availability | Base Colors | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Orchid | Happiness Seed Shop | Red, Yellow, Blue | Common flower, used in gifts and cross-breeding |
Rose | Happiness Seed Shop | Red, Yellow, Blue | Popular gift flower for many NPCs |
Tulip | Happiness Seed Shop | Red, Yellow, Blue | Seasonal availability may vary |
Moonrise | Happiness Seed Shop | Red, Yellow, Blue | Night-blooming flower with unique visual |
Sleep Lily | Wild (Moonlit Forest, Mural Valley area) | White (base) | Can produce a rare Black variant through cross-breeding |
Color System
Each flower species (except Sleep Lilies) comes in three base colors that can be purchased directly from the Seed Shop. Through cross-breeding, five additional hybrid colors can be created.
Base Colors
Color | How to Get |
|---|---|
Red | Buy Red seeds from Happiness Seed Shop |
Yellow | Buy Yellow seeds from Happiness Seed Shop |
Blue | Buy Blue seeds from Happiness Seed Shop |
Hybrid Colors
Hybrid Color | Typical Parent Combination | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Orange | Red + Yellow | Follows standard color theory |
Green | Yellow + Blue | Follows standard color theory |
Purple | Red + Blue | Follows standard color theory |
Pink | Red + White or Red variant | May require specific parent combinations |
Brown | Multiple color mix | Rarest standard hybrid; may require Orange + Purple or similar |
Important note: The exact parent color combinations for each hybrid are based on standard color theory logic, which Starsand Island generally follows. However, since the game is in early access, exact results may vary. Cross-breeding outcomes involve a chance element, so not every attempt produces a hybrid. Experiment with different combinations and be prepared for multiple attempts.
Special: Black Sleep Lily
Sleep Lilies found in the Moonlit Forest can be cross-bred to produce a rare Black variant. This is the only way to obtain black flowers in the game. Sleep Lilies are wild-growing and must be collected from the Mural Valley area of the Moonlit Forest, then replanted on your farm for cross-breeding.
How cross-breeding works
Plant two flowers of the same type but different colors on your farm.
Leave a single empty plot of tilled dirt directly between them. The empty plot must be watered and maintained.
Wait for both parent flowers to fully mature (4 days 18 hours).
After maturation, there is a chance that a new hybrid flower will spawn on the empty plot between the parents.
Cross-breeding only works between flowers of the same species (e.g., Red Orchid x Blue Orchid). You cannot cross different flower types with each other.
Success is not guaranteed. The mechanic is probability-based -- you may need multiple attempts.
Nutrient Soil IV fertilizer (Senior Farmer, 250 Coins per 5 bags) boosts pollination probability by 15%. Apply it to the parent flower plots after planting. Unlike other fertilizers, Nutrient Soil IV can be stacked with Ripening Fertilizer to also speed up growth time.
Hybrid colors
Five hybrid colors can be produced by cross-breeding different base colors. These apply to all four flower types (Orchid, Moonrise, Rose, Tulip).
Item | Description |
|---|---|
Orange | Likely produced from Red + Yellow parents (following standard color mixing logic) |
Purple | Likely produced from Red + Blue parents |
Green | Likely produced from Yellow + Blue parents |
Pink | Likely produced from Red + Red, or Red + a hybrid combination |
Brown | Likely produced from combining multiple hybrid flowers, or a three-color mix |
Note: The exact parent color combinations that produce each hybrid have not been fully confirmed by the community yet. The game is in Early Access, and players are still mapping out the breeding tables. The combinations listed above follow standard color theory logic, which many farming simulation games use -- but Starsand Island may have its own system. Experiment and record your results.
Cross-breeding hybrid flowers
Once you have hybrid flowers, you can use them as parents in new cross-breeding attempts. For example, crossing an Orange flower with a Blue flower may produce a different result than crossing two base colors. This opens up second-generation breeding chains for the rarest colors like Brown.
Cross-Breeding Layout
For efficient cross-breeding, set up a dedicated flower section on your farm with the following layout pattern:
Row layout: Parent A, empty tile, Parent B, gap, Parent A, empty tile, Parent B. This creates multiple breeding pairs in a single row.
Leave one tile of space between each breeding pair to prevent accidental cross-pollination between sets.
Place sprinklers to cover both parent tiles and the empty middle tile. Consistent watering is critical.
Label or remember which parent colors are in each pair. Tracking results helps you identify which combinations produce which hybrids.
Sleep Lilies
Sleep Lilies are wild flowers found in the Moonlit Forest, specifically in the Mural Valley area. Unlike shop flowers, you collect both the flowers and their seeds from the forest, then plant the seeds on your farm.
Sleep Lily colors
Item | Description |
|---|---|
Blue Sleep Lily | Found in Mural Valley, lower part of the waterfall |
Red Sleep Lily | Found in Mural Valley near the campsite. Also obtainable by defeating the Glintortle boss. |
Yellow Sleep Lily | Found in Mural Valley, after the gate |
Black Sleep Lily
The Black Sleep Lily is a rare variant produced by cross-breeding different Sleep Lily colors using the same mechanic as regular flowers -- two different-colored Sleep Lilies with an empty plot between them. The Black variant has a lower spawn probability than standard hybrid colors, so expect multiple attempts.
Sleep Lilies can be planted on your farm once you have their seeds. Collect seeds from all three color variants in the Moonlit Forest, then set up cross-breeding plots at home.
Wild flowers
In addition to plantable flowers, several wild flower species can be gathered around the island and the Moonlit Forest. These cannot be cross-bred but are valuable as NPC gifts.

Flower Uses
Use | Details |
|---|---|
NPC Gifts | Many NPCs like or love specific flower types and colors. Rare hybrid colors make excellent gifts for high affection gain. |
Decoration | Planted flowers enhance your farm's visual appeal. Different colors create striking garden designs. |
Profession Quests | The Senior Farmer trial requires cross-bred hybrid flowers. |
Islandpedia | Each flower color variant counts as a separate Islandpedia entry, contributing to discovery milestones. |
Selling | Hybrid flowers sell for more than base-color flowers. Rare colors command premium prices. |
Senior Farmer Trial
The Senior Farmer trial with Graminova requires you to cross-breed flowers and present specific hybrid colors. Talk to Graminova near the Happiness Seed Shop to begin this trial after completing the Intermediate Farmer certification.
Start collecting and planting all three base colors (Red, Yellow, Blue) of multiple flower species well before you reach Senior Farmer.
Set up multiple cross-breeding rows simultaneously to produce hybrids faster. Having 4 to 6 active breeding pairs increases your odds significantly.
Keep a stock of extra hybrid flowers. The trial may require specific colors, and having extras prevents delays.
Purchase seeds for Red, Yellow, and Blue from the Happiness Seed Shop. Pink seeds may also be available for purchase depending on shop rotation.
Islandpedia tracking
Every flower variant you grow or collect is automatically recorded in the Islandpedia phone app under the Plants category. The Stamp Collection tracks milestones across categories and rewards Coins for completing sets -- collecting all flower color variants (including hybrids) contributes to Plants stamp progress.
Tips
Buy seeds for all three base colors as soon as you unlock the Happiness Seed Shop. Starting cross-breeding early gives you more time to produce hybrids before the Senior Farmer trial.
Cross-breeding is chance-based. Set up multiple pairs and be patient. It may take several growth cycles to produce a specific hybrid color.
Sprinklers are extremely helpful for cross-breeding. Missing a day of watering resets the process.
Keep a few of each hybrid color in a chest as backup. They are useful for gifts, quests, and further breeding experiments.
Flowers grow on regular tilled soil. They do not need trellises or paddy fields.
Check the Islandpedia to see which flower color variants you have discovered. Completing the flower section contributes to overall Islandpedia progress.
Use Nutrient Soil IV on every flower plot. The 15% pollination boost stacks with Ripening Fertilizer, so you can speed up growth and improve cross-breeding odds simultaneously.
Set up dedicated cross-breeding rows: one Red flower, one empty plot, one Blue flower, repeat. This layout maximizes the number of breeding attempts per harvest cycle.
Keep a notebook (or mental notes) of which color combinations you have tried and what they produced. The community is still mapping the full breeding table.
Collect all three Sleep Lily seed colors from the Moonlit Forest as early as possible. The Black Sleep Lily is one of the rarest items in the game.
Flowers are season-locked, so plan your cross-breeding around the season calendar. You only have 28 days per season, and each growth cycle takes nearly 5 days.
Moonflower is the best flower gift for almost every NPC. Farm it in bulk from the Moonlit Forest and give one every day to your target NPC for fast relationship progress.
If a cross-breeding attempt fails (nothing spawns on the empty plot), replant and try again. The probability is per attempt, not per pair -- the same color combination can succeed on a future cycle.
Hydrangeas found in the wild sometimes yield seeds when harvested with an Axe. Grab these seeds to grow Hydrangeas on your farm for convenient gift access.
