Overview
The Charcoal Kiln is a crafting station in Starsand Island that converts raw wood into Charcoal. Charcoal is an essential intermediate material used primarily as fuel for the Furnace when smelting ores into ingots. Without a steady supply of Charcoal, you cannot smelt Copper, Tin, Iron, or any other metal ore. The Charcoal Kiln is one of the earliest crafting stations you should build after starting the Crafter profession.
How to Unlock
The Charcoal Kiln blueprint becomes available at the Apprentice Crafter tier. Once you begin the Crafter profession questline through Zerine at the General Store, you can purchase the blueprint from Zerine's crafting terminal. The Apprentice Crafter tier is the first step in the Crafter profession, so the Charcoal Kiln is accessible very early in your crafting journey.
Crafting Recipe
The Charcoal Kiln is built at Worktable I (the base-tier worktable). The required materials are basic resources available on the island surface.
Material | Quantity | Source |
|---|---|---|
Stone | 15 | Mine stone deposits on the island surface or in the Moonlit Forest |
10 | Chop softwood trees (common trees found throughout the island) | |
3 | Mine copper veins on the island or in the early Moonlit Forest zones |
All of these materials are available before entering the Moonlit Forest, so you can build the Charcoal Kiln as soon as you have the blueprint and a Worktable placed on your Hopeland property.
Placement
After crafting, place the Charcoal Kiln on your Hopeland property like any other furniture or station. It takes up a moderate footprint and emits a visual smoke effect while processing. Place it near your Furnace for an efficient smelting workflow: convert wood to Charcoal at the Kiln, then walk a few steps to the Furnace to smelt ores using that Charcoal.
How It Works
The Charcoal Kiln accepts raw wood as input and produces Charcoal as output. The process is time-based: you load wood into the Kiln, wait for the processing timer to complete, and collect the resulting Charcoal.
Interact with the Charcoal Kiln to open its interface.
Place raw wood into the input slot.
The Kiln begins processing automatically. A timer shows the remaining duration.
Once complete, collect the Charcoal from the output slot.
You can load wood and leave to do other activities while the Kiln processes. It does not require you to stand nearby.
Input Wood Types
The Charcoal Kiln accepts several types of wood. Different wood types may have slightly different processing characteristics, but they all produce Charcoal.
Wood Type | Source | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Common trees on the island surface | The most readily available wood type. Good for bulk Charcoal production in the early game. | |
Trees in the Moonlit Forest and some island surface areas | Slightly less common than Softwood but still abundant. Often gathered alongside ore runs in the forest. | |
Premium Wood | Rare trees in specific locations | Higher quality wood. May yield more Charcoal per unit or process faster, but is harder to gather in bulk. |
For most players, Softwood is the primary input for Charcoal production due to its abundance. Hardwood is a good secondary source, especially if you are already gathering it for other crafting recipes. Premium Wood is best reserved for crafting recipes that specifically require it rather than burning it for Charcoal.
Charcoal Uses
Charcoal is one of the most consumed intermediate materials in Starsand Island. Its primary uses include:
Use | Station | Details |
|---|---|---|
Smelting fuel | Required for every ore smelting recipe: Copper Ingots, Tin Ingots, Bronze Ingots, Iron Ingots, and more | |
Crafting ingredient | Worktable | Used in select crafting recipes that call for Charcoal directly |
Fuel source | Various | Some advanced recipes and stations use Charcoal as a general fuel input |
Because the Furnace requires Charcoal for every smelting operation, your Charcoal consumption scales directly with how much metal you process. Players focused on crafting and building will go through Charcoal quickly.
Efficiency Tips
Build multiple Charcoal Kilns. A single Kiln processes one batch at a time, and the processing timer can feel slow if you need large quantities of Charcoal. Running two or three Kilns in parallel keeps up with heavy Furnace usage.
Chop trees during downtime. Whenever you are waiting for crops to grow or animals to produce, spend that time gathering Softwood. Keeping a large wood stockpile means your Kilns are never sitting idle.
Place the Kiln next to your Furnace. This minimizes travel time between converting wood to Charcoal and using that Charcoal for smelting.
Use Softwood as your primary Charcoal source. It is the most abundant and easiest to gather in bulk. Save Hardwood for recipes that specifically require it.
Queue Charcoal production before leaving your Hopeland. Load the Kiln before heading to the Moonlit Forest or going fishing, and your Charcoal will be ready when you return.
Keep a reserve of at least 20 Charcoal at all times. Running out mid-smelting session means an unexpected pause while you wait for the Kiln to produce more.
