Overview
The Spinning Wheel is a crafting station in Starsand Island that processes raw fiber and wool into thread. It occupies the second step in the textile production chain, sitting between raw animal products and finished fabric. The full chain works as follows: animals produce wool or fiber as byproducts, the Spinning Wheel converts those raw materials into thread, the Loom weaves thread into fabric, and the Sewing Table turns fabric into clothing and outfits. Without the Spinning Wheel, raw fiber has no crafting use beyond selling at shops.
Textile Production Chain
Understanding where the Spinning Wheel fits in the full textile pipeline is essential for planning your crafting workflow.
Step | Station | Input | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | Animal Enclosure | Fed, happy animals | |
2 | Spinning Wheel | ||
3 | Fabric / Cloth | ||
4 | Fabric + Dye (optional) | Clothing, Hats, Accessories |
The Spinning Wheel and Loom serve parallel roles in the textile system. The Spinning Wheel produces rope, fishing line, and thread, while the Loom takes raw wool and fur directly to produce fabrics like Flannel, Leather, and Linen. You do not need to process wool through the Spinning Wheel before using the Loom. However, the Sewing Table does require fabric from the Loom to produce finished clothing.
How to Unlock
The Spinning Wheel blueprint is unlocked through the Crafter profession progression. After completing the Junior Crafter trial assigned by Zerine at the General Store, you gain access to the Spinning Wheel blueprint in the crafting terminal.
The Junior Crafter trial involves building an Ore Analyzer and crafting Verdant Breeze Rollerblades. Once that trial is complete, several new blueprints become available including the Spinning Wheel, the Loom, and various furniture recipes.
Crafting Recipe
The Spinning Wheel is crafted at Worktable I. The recipe uses basic materials that should be readily available by the time you unlock it.
Material | Quantity | Source |
|---|---|---|
10 | Chop Hardwood trees in the Moonlit Forest or island surface | |
Copper Sheet | 2 | Process at the Cutter (1 Copper Ingot + 1 Copper Ore per sheet) |
6 | Harvest from Fiber Plants on the island or purchase from the General Store |
Fiber and Wool Processing
Animals produce raw fiber and wool, and the Spinning Wheel processes these into thread. The thread type determines the quality of the fabric and final clothing items produced downstream.
Animal | Raw Material | Thread Output | Thread Quality |
|---|---|---|---|
Wool Thread | Standard |
Thread quality affects the properties of the resulting fabric. Higher quality thread produces fabric with better stats when used for crafting clothing.
Processing Times
Each fiber type has a slightly different processing time at the Spinning Wheel.
Fiber Type | Processing Time | Output Quantity |
|---|---|---|
~30 seconds | 2 Wool Thread per 3 Wool |
The Spinning Wheel processes Wool from sheep and Fiber from various sources. Plan your ranching accordingly to maintain a steady supply of raw materials.
Happy Animals and Fiber Quality
The quality of raw fiber produced by your animals affects the thread output. Animals with high happiness (boosted by items like the Music Box) produce higher-grade raw materials. Fine Wool from a happy sheep, for example, yields Fine Wool Thread at the Spinning Wheel, which in turn produces Fine Fabric at the Loom.
This quality chain means that investing in animal happiness through proper ranching practices directly improves the value of your entire textile operation. A well-maintained ranch with happy animals and a full textile production line is one of the most profitable setups in the game.
Placement and Workflow
Place the Spinning Wheel near your animal enclosures and your Loom for an efficient workflow. The ideal layout creates a short path from enclosure (collect fiber) to Spinning Wheel (make thread) to Loom (make fabric) to Sewing Table (make clothing).
You can build multiple Spinning Wheels to process different fiber types simultaneously. This is especially useful if you raise both sheep and alpacas, since you can dedicate one wheel to Wool and another to Alpaca Fiber without constantly switching inputs.
Uses for Thread
Thread produced at the Spinning Wheel has uses beyond just feeding into the Loom:
Use | Details |
|---|---|
Loom (primary use) | Thread is woven into Fabric at the Loom for clothing crafting |
Crafting recipes | Some furniture, decorations, and tools require Thread as a component |
Silk Thread is required to craft the Music Box ranching station | |
Quest items | Several Crafter profession trials require specific thread types |
Selling | Thread sells for more than raw fiber, making the Spinning Wheel a value-add even if you do not craft clothing |
Downstream: Loom and Sewing Table
After spinning thread, the next step is weaving at the Loom. The Loom combines multiple thread units into a single piece of fabric. Fabric type and quality depend on the thread used. Cotton Thread produces Cotton Fabric (lightweight, breathable), Wool Thread produces Wool Fabric (warm, durable), and Silk Thread produces Silk Fabric (elegant, high-value).
The final step is the Sewing Table, which turns fabric into wearable items. The Sewing Table accepts fabric plus optional dye to create colored clothing. The clothing and outfits article covers all available clothing recipes and their fabric requirements.
Tips
Build the Spinning Wheel as soon as you unlock it, even if you do not have a Loom yet. Stockpiling thread early means you can immediately start weaving once the Loom is available.
Do not sell raw fiber at shops. The value increase from fiber to thread to fabric to clothing is substantial at each step. Processing raw materials into finished goods is always more profitable.
Prioritize Silkworm ranching if you want the best clothing items. Silk Thread is the highest quality thread and produces the most valuable clothing.
Keep separate storage chests for each thread type near the Spinning Wheel. Mixing thread types in a single chest makes it harder to track your inventory for Loom recipes.
Run the Spinning Wheel overnight or while doing other activities. Load it up before heading out to explore, fish, or mine, and collect the finished thread when you return.
Check whether your fiber comes from happy animals. The quality difference between standard and high-happiness fiber carries through the entire production chain.
