Overview
Cooking is a core gameplay system inStarsand Islandthat transforms rawcrops, fish, meat, and foraged ingredients into meals, drinks, jams, and preserved foods. Cooked dishes restorestaminaand HP, grant powerful temporarybuffsforfarming, fishing, combat, andexploration, and sell for significantly more than their raw ingredients. The game features over100 recipesspread across multiple cooking and processing stations.
Unlike most farming games, cooking in Starsand Island takesreal in-game time. Each recipe has a cooking duration, so you cannot instantly produce meals. Planning ahead and running multiple cooking stations in parallel is essential for efficient food production.
Cooking Stations
There are two primary cooking stations in Starsand Island. Both handle the same pool of recipes; the Gas Stove is simply an upgraded version of the Campfire.

Station | How to Obtain | Function |
|---|---|---|
Crafted at Worktable (starting station) | Cooks meals and dishes. Takes real in-game time per recipe. Build multiple Campfires to cook in parallel. | |
Blueprint from Aureleaf Kitchen (1,000 Coins) | Upgraded Campfire with the same recipe list. Crafted at a Worktable after purchasing the blueprint. |
Since every recipe has a cooking duration,building2 to 3 Campfires or Gas Stovesis strongly recommended so you can run multiple dishes at the same time. Place them near your processing stations for a compact kitchen setup.
Juicer
The Juicer is a dedicated station for preparingdrinks, smoothies, and juices. Its blueprint costs550 Coinsfrom theAureleaf Kitchenand is crafted at a Worktable. Drinks made in the Juicer often provide unique buffs that differ from Campfire/Stove dishes.
Notable Juicer recipes include:
Recipe | Ingredients | Effect |
|---|---|---|
2x Red Grape | +98Energy, Bonus Timber buff | |
2x Green Grape | +98 Energy, Bonus Ore buff | |
High sell value (~750 Coins); excellent for profit | ||
2x Water, 3x Sugar | Refreshing drink from Aureleaf Kitchen recipe | |
Coconut | Quest reward recipe |
Grape juices are among the most efficient buff foods in the game because grapes grow ontrellisesand keep producing without replanting, giving a steady supply of Bonus Timber or Bonus Ore buffs.
Processing Stations
Raw crops must be processed into base cooking ingredients before they can be used in many recipes. Four processing stations handle this conversion, and each operates on a timer rather than producing results instantly.
Separator
The Separator is the most important processing station. It instantly converts raw crops andanimal productsinto seven core ingredients used across dozens of recipes. Craft the Separator early using3 Stone, 3 Softwood, 5 Fiber.
Output | Input |
|---|---|
Any vegetable | |
Any fruit | |
Any fish | |
Any bug |
Most outputs accept multiple input types (any vegetable, any fruit, any fish), giving flexibility in what you grow or catch. The exceptions are Flour (wheat only) and Sugar (beetroot or sugarcane only).
Salt Production
Salt is the one core cooking ingredient that doesnotcome from the Separator. Instead, it is produced in theCharcoal KilnusingSalt Brick and Fiber. Salt Bricks are gathered from salt deposits found along beaches and in caves.
Brewing Barrel
TheBrewing Barrelconverts crops into liquid condiments over time. It produces three key cooking ingredients:
Output | Input |
|---|---|
Crops (time-based brewing) | |
Soybeans (time-based brewing) | |
Oil-producing crops (time-based brewing) |
These condiments are essential ingredients in many mid-tier and high-tier recipes such as Hot Dry Noodles (soy sauce), Sweet and Sour Cabbage (vinegar), and Fire-Kissed Garlic (cooking oil).
Jam Maker
TheJam Makercombines fruits and sugar into jams and preserves over time. Its blueprint costs1,600 Coinsfrom theHappiness Seed Shopand requiresJunior Farmer Certification. Jams serve as ingredients in other recipes and can be sold for profit. The CozygamingPanda guide identifies17 jam varietiesin total.
Pickling Jar
ThePickling Jarcombines vegetables and salt into pickled foods over time. Its blueprint costs2,000 Coinsfrom the Happiness Seed Shop and requiresIntermediate Farmer Certification. Pickled products are used as ingredients, sold for profit, and frequently requested on theTask Board.

Food Buff System
Many cooked dishes providetemporary buffsthat enhance specific activities. Buffs last for a set duration (typically 4 minutes for standard buffs, 30 seconds for some) and can significantly improve efficiency. You start with3 food buff slots, meaning you can have up to three active buffs at once.
Expanding Buff Slots
Eating a dish calledSpagpermanently adds 1 additional buff slot. You can eat Spag twice to reach a maximum of5 total buff slots. Spag is a special item acquired duringIsland Day on Spring 28, not a recipe you can cook at any time. Prioritize obtaining Spag early, as having 5 active buffs is a major quality-of-life improvement.
Cooked meals can grant temporary buffs that significantly boost specific activities. Most buffs last around 4 minutes. Only one buff can be active at a time; eating a new buff food replaces the current buff. Some buffs stack up to 5x if you eat multiple servings of the same food. See theCooking Buffsarticle for detailed mechanics.

Building an Efficient Kitchen
Since cooking takes real in-game time, your kitchen setup directly affects how many meals you can produce per day. Here is the recommended layout progression:
Starter Kitchen (Apprentice)
1 Campfire (starter station from Crafter certification)
1 Separator (buy blueprint from Zerine's General Store as soon as possible)
Place them near each other on your property for quick access
Intermediate Kitchen (Junior/Intermediate)
2 to 3 Campfires or Gas Stoves for parallel cooking
1 Juicer for drinks and smoothies
1 Separator for processing crops daily
1 Grinder for flour and spice processing
1 Brewing Barrel for vinegar, oil, and sauces
Place near storage chests for efficient material access
Advanced Kitchen (Senior/Expert)
3 to 4 Gas Stoves for high-volume cooking
2 Juicers for drink production
1 to 2 Separators for batch processing
1 to 2 Grinders for intermediate ingredients
1 to 2 Brewing Barrels for fermentation
1 Jam Maker for premium jams
1 Pickling Jar for pickled vegetables
Multiple storage chests nearby with organized ingredients

Ingredient Sourcing Tips
Efficient cooking starts with reliable ingredient supply. Here are the best strategies for keeping your kitchen stocked:
Farm staples: Dedicate crop plots to wheat, rice, peppers, tomatoes, and berries. These appear in the most recipes.
Fish regularly: Many buff recipes require fish or fish products. Keep a few stacks of common fish in your storage.
Batch-process intermediates daily: Run your Separator and Grinder every morning. Convert wheat to flour, fish to fillets, and crops to pulps so they are ready when you need them.
Buy cheap staples from shops: Sugar, salt, cooking oil, and vinegar are cheaper to buy from Zerine's General Store or Aureleaf Kitchen than to produce yourself. Do not waste farm plots growing ingredients that cost a few Coins at the shop.
Harvest monster drops: Enemies in the Moonlit Forest drop meat and special ingredients used in high-tier combat recipes.
Check the Merchant Ship: The ship at Starsand Port refreshes on Mondays and sometimes carries rare ingredients and recipe scrolls.
Cooking for Profit
Cooking is one of the most effective ways to multiply the value of your harvested goods. Cooked dishes consistently sell for far more than the sum of their raw ingredients.
Example | Raw Value | Cooked Value | Profit Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
Water Spinach (raw) vs. Stir-Fried Water Spinach | 27 Coins | 90 Coins | 233% |
Low | ~750 Coins | Very high |
For maximum profit, sell cooked dishes through theMerchant Ship, which pays200% of normal vendor value. This effectively doubles an already-profitable cooked dish. The Merchant Ship requires building thePortfirst, and it only purchases specific items in limited quantities per visit.
Lemonade made from lemon trees and sugarcane through the Juicer is one of the highest-value items you can produce once you have a stable supply of both crops. For more strategies, seeHow to Make Money Fast.
Common Mistakes
Only building one cooking station. Since recipes take time, a single station bottlenecks your production. Build at least 2 to 3 early on.
Ignoring the Separator. Many recipes require processed ingredients (flour, fillets, powder) that only come from the Separator. Buy the blueprint early and use it daily.
Eating food only for healing. Buff foods are far more impactful than raw healing. A Never Skunked buff for 4 minutes of fishing is worth more than any amount of emergency healing.
Not planning meals before activities. Cook buff foods the night before and eat them right before starting your task (farming, fishing, dungeon run) to maximize the 4-minute duration.
Growing everything yourself. Basic seasonings (salt, sugar, oil) are cheap at shops. Dedicate your farm plots to crops that actually matter for recipes.
Tips
Build multiple cooking stations early. Since cooking takes real in-game time, having 2 to 3 Campfires or Gas Stoves running at once dramatically increases food output.
Buy recipes from Aurelis whenever you can afford them. A wide recipe collection means you can always cook something valuable regardless of what ingredients you have.
Keep your processing stations running constantly. Queue up Flour, Sugar, Vinegar, and Cooking Oil production whenever you have spare crops. These base ingredients are used in many recipes.
Match food buffs to your planned activities. Use Watering Mastery when farming, Never Skunked when fishing, Battle Spirit before entering theMoonlit Forest, and Scavenger when searching trash cans.
Get Spag on Island Day (Spring 28)to unlock your 4th and 5th buff slots. Having 5 active buffs at once is a significant advantage.
Grow grapes on trellises for easy buff food. Grapes regrow without replanting, and Red/Green Grape Juice provides the valuable Bonus Timber and Bonus Ore buffs.
Never sell raw crops. Process them into cooked dishes first for a massive profit increase, then sell through the Merchant Ship for 200% value.
Craft the Separator as soon as possible. It costs only 3 Stone, 3 Softwood, and 5 Fiber, and it unlocks the base ingredients needed for most recipes.
Check the Exploration Club for healing recipes. Recipes like Lamb Skewers and Moonflower Tea are great for the Moonlit Forest since they restore HP and require only foraged ingredients.
