Overview
Sheep are one of the most important livestock species in Starsand Island because they produce colored wool, the foundation of the entire textile crafting chain. Sheep become available at the Intermediate Rancher tier, with two purchasable base variants: Snowool (white, 650 Coins) and Ebowool (black, 650 Coins). Through breeding, sheep can produce 10 additional color variants (12 total), each yielding wool of a matching color. Colored wool is processed into colored fabric at the Loom, which is used at the Sewing Table to craft clothing and decorations.

Sheep are also rideable (1 person per sheep), giving them secondary utility as an early mount option. All 12 variants share the same care requirements and product output, differing only in wool color.

All 12 Variants
Sheep have the most color variants of any species in the game. The two base variants (Snowool and Ebowool) are purchased from Pastelle at Green Pasture Ranch, while the remaining 10 are obtained through breeding. See the dedicated Colored Sheep Variants article for community-reported parent pairs and the Bio-Research alternative.

Breeding Colored Sheep
The recommended starting pair is one Snowool and one Ebowool. Breeding these two together can produce Duswool, Fluffwool, or Blue Sheep as offspring. From there, subsequent pairings of new color variants with each other (or with the base pair) can yield additional colors.
Sheep color outcomes are largely RNG-based rather than following strict color-mixing rules. There is no confirmed formula where combining two specific colors guarantees a third. Instead, the breeding system rolls a random color each time offspring are produced. This means that even a pair of Snowool parents can occasionally produce an unexpected color variant.
Breeding Infrastructure
To breed sheep, you need a Breeding House or Selective Breeding House placed on your property. Place one male and one female of the same species in the breeding enclosure, keep an empty slot for the offspring, and make sure both parents are fed and happy. Offspring inherit random genes from their parents, but color outcomes remain RNG-driven.
Element | Description |
|---|---|
Breeding House | Standard building that allows you to pair a male and female. Available from Green Pasture Ranch. |
Advanced building with improved breeding success rates. Unlocked at higher Rancher tiers. |
Cloud Sheep
The Cloud Sheep is the super rare variant with an ethereal, cloud-like appearance. Community reports confirm it has the lowest breeding probability of any sheep variant. Players have reported going 200+ hours of gameplay without obtaining one. To maximize your odds:
Run three or more barns dedicated to sheep breeding simultaneously.
Keep all breeding pairs well-fed and at high happiness for consistent offspring cycles.
Sell or relocate unwanted offspring promptly to free up enclosure slots for the next round.
Bio-Research Shortcut
Orange Sheep and Blue Sheep can also be obtained through the Islandpedia Bio-Research system. Completing 72 stamp entries (primarily fish and bug discoveries) awards 3 Orange Sheep and 3 Blue Sheep instantly. Catching fish through fishing quests and collecting bugs while gathering bumblebees for hives are efficient ways to fill the stamp collection.
Wool and the Textile Chain
Sheep wool is the entry point for the entire clothing crafting system:
Shear sheep to collect colored wool (requires Brush or Auto Shearer)
Process wool into thread at the Spinning Wheel
Process thread into colored fabric at the Loom
Craft clothing at the Sewing Table using fabric and patterns
Seven wool colors are used in textile crafting: Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Orange, Cyan, and Black. The Loom can also produce Purple and Rainbow fabrics by combining specific colored threads.
Products
Product | Frequency | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Colored Wool | Every 2 days | Color matches sheep variant. Shear with Brush or Auto Shearer. |
Sheep Milk | Daily | Described as more easily absorbed than cow milk. Used in cooking recipes. |
Sheep Saliva | Occasional | Rare drop. Used in advanced crafting recipes. |
Sheep Cheese Block | Occasional | Rare drop. A fermented sheep milk product with a rich, salty-sweet flavor. Used in cooking. |
Poop | Daily | Used as fertilizer material in the Fertilizer Box. |
Golden Poop | Rare | Dropped when sheep are at maximum happiness. Sells for a high price. |
Silver Poop | Rare | Dropped when sheep are at high happiness. Sells for a moderate price. |
Care
Sheep care follows the same general pattern as other animals. Feed them daily with Sheep Feed (purchased from Green Pasture Ranch or crafted at a Feeder), brush them every couple of days to keep them clean, and pet them to boost happiness. Happy sheep produce higher-quality wool and are more likely to drop rare secondary products like Sheep Saliva, Cheese Blocks, and Golden or Silver Poop.
Sheep that are not fed will become unhappy and stop producing wool and other items. Neglected sheep will not die, but their product output drops to zero until they are cared for again. Each sheep consumes one unit of Sheep Feed per day from the barn's feed trough.
Housing
Sheep require a Sheep Barn, which holds up to 4 sheep. The Sheep Barn blueprint costs 1,500 Coins from Green Pasture Ranch and requires various building materials to construct. You can place multiple Sheep Barns on your property to house more sheep. The barn must be placed on a flat surface with enough clearance on all sides.
For players focused on breeding colored variants, three or more Sheep Barns is recommended. This allows you to run multiple breeding pairs at once, greatly improving your odds of getting rare colors like Purple Sheep and Cloud Sheep.
Tips
Start with one Snowool and one Ebowool. Breeding them together is the best starting point for unlocking additional color variants.
Sheep color breeding is RNG-based. Keep breeding and you will eventually see new colors appear. Do not expect predictable color-mixing results.
Blue and Orange sheep can be obtained guaranteed through the Islandpedia Bio-Research system (72 stamp entries). This is often faster than breeding for these specific colors.
All sheep are rideable (1 person), making them a bonus early mount option before you unlock vehicles.
Keep at least one Snowool and one Ebowool even after obtaining color variants. They serve as reliable base wool producers.
If you need a specific wool color for a Dye System recipe, prioritize breeding for that color variant rather than relying on the Loom's color mixing.
Sell or gift unwanted offspring promptly to free up enclosure slots. Each Sheep Barn only holds 4 animals, and breeding requires at least one empty slot.
Brush sheep regularly. Clean sheep have higher happiness, which increases the chance of rare product drops like Sheep Saliva and Sheep Cheese Block.
