Overview
The romance and relationship system in Starsand Island lets players build affection with the island's NPCs through daily interactions, gifting, quest completion, and Bulletin Board requests. The system uses Affection Points that accumulate toward Heart Levels, each unlocking new relationship perks. There are 15 romanceable characters, all available regardless of the player's chosen gender.

The current Early Access build includes a full relationship progression system culminating in the Moving In and Cohabitation feature. An expanded Dating System with dedicated date activities is confirmed for the April 2026 content update as part of the Post-Launch Roadmap.
How Affection Works
Every interaction with an NPC earns Affection Points that accumulate toward Heart Levels. You can track each NPC's current affection level through the Social app on your phone. The Social app also lets you place waypoints to any NPC's current location by selecting the Residents icon on the map and tapping Track.
Earning Affection Points
Source | Points | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Daily conversation | +5 | Talk to each NPC once per day. Guaranteed minimum. |
Neutral gift | +5 | Items the NPC neither likes nor dislikes. |
Liked gift | +10 | Items the NPC enjoys. Check the gift guide for preferences. |
Loved gift | +15 | The NPC's favorite items. Best daily affection gain from gifting. |
Disliked gift | Negative | Giving an item the NPC dislikes reduces affection. Check preferences first. |
Bulletin Board request | +15 to +30 | Depends on request difficulty. Easy requests give around 15; hard ones give up to 30. |
Lost item return | +20 | NPCs occasionally lose items. Return them for a significant affection boost. |
Profession quest | +50 | Major story or profession quests give the largest single-event affection gain. |
You can give each NPC one gift per day. Conversation is free and separate from the gift limit. Make a habit of talking to and gifting NPCs you want to romance every day to build affection steadily.
Gift Tips
Universal gifts like Moonflowers work for most NPCs. These are a safe option when you do not know someone's preferences.
Check the All NPC Gift Chart or each NPC's wiki page for specific liked and loved items.
Cooked dishes and crafted items tend to be well-received by most NPCs.
Avoid gifting items an NPC hates. For example, Zerine dislikes Mutton and Premium Wood.
Some NPC loved items are craftable. For example, Zerine loves Copper Sheets, which are easy to make at the Cutter.
Heart Levels
Affection Points accumulate toward five Heart Levels. Each level unlocks new interactions and relationship perks.
Heart Level | Affection Points Required | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|
1 Heart | 90 | NPC may start gifting you items. Basic relationship established. |
2 Hearts | 220 | You can take group photos with the NPC at any time. |
3 Hearts | 370 | You can enter the NPC's bedroom or house. Chests inside their room can be opened for items. |
4 Hearts | 770 | You can post Bulletin Board requests for this NPC. Deeper dialogue options become available. |
5 Hearts | TBD (estimated 1,000+) | You can ask the NPC to move in. Cohabitation becomes available. |
You can build affection with multiple NPCs simultaneously. Reaching 5 Hearts with several characters before committing to one is a valid strategy if you want to explore different relationship stories.
The 15 Romanceable NPCs
All 15 romanceable NPCs are available regardless of the player's chosen gender. Each NPC has unique gift preferences, a daily schedule, and personal story quests that unlock at higher Heart Levels.
NPC | Role/Location |
|---|---|
Farmer at Grain Haven | |
Chef at Aureleaf Kitchen | |
Fishing mentor at AquaBlue Outpost | |
Farming mentor at Happiness Seed Shop | |
Arcade operator at Chrono Arcade | |
Astronomer | |
Mechanic at G-Power Bike | |
Ranching mentor at Green Pasture Ranch | |
Hair Stylist at Bloom Atelier | |
Mayor's granddaughter, childhood friend | |
Pet Shop Owner at Woof and Wow Pets | |
Musician at Silvan Notes | |
Wandering traveler | |

Note: Youfang is romanceable but cannot currently be invited to move in during Early Access. This is expected to change in a future update.
Moving in and Cohabitation
Once you reach 5 Hearts with a romanceable NPC, you can invite them to move in through the Moving In and Cohabitation feature. This is the current endpoint of romance progression in Early Access.

How to Ask Someone to Move In
Reach Heart Level 5 with the NPC you want to romance.
Make sure your home has available space for a second resident (a bed and open floor area).
Talk to the NPC and select the "Move In" option in the dialogue menu.
If accepted, the NPC relocates to your homestead.
What Happens After Moving In
Your partner moves into your house and follows a daily routine from there.
They participate in daily farm routines, helping with chores around the homestead.
New dialogue options and interactions become available.
The NPC continues to be part of the island community but considers your home their base.
Non-Romanceable Friendships
NPCs who are not romanceable still have a friendship system. Building friendship unlocks benefits similar to the lower Heart Levels (entering rooms, receiving mail gifts, posting Bulletin Board requests). Friendship bonds offer comparable depth to romance, and mentor cohabitation is possible with some non-romanceable NPCs.
The four crossover characters from the My Time series (Gust, Ginger, Fang, Nia) appear as befriendable NPCs but are not romanceable.
April 2026 Dating System Update
According to the developer Post-Launch Roadmap, an expanded Dating System is scheduled for release in April 2026 as part of a broader content update. This update also includes expanded NPC voice content, adding voiced dialogue to more interactions and story moments. The Dating System will add a new layer of activities between standard friendship building and the move-in milestone.
Confirmed Details
The Dating System is part of the April 2026 content update.
The same update includes expanded NPC voice content with voiced dialogue for more interactions.
The feature will build on the existing romance progression rather than replacing it.
It is not yet implemented in the Early Access build as of early April 2026, but is expected to arrive in an April 2026 patch.
Expected Features
Based on developer roadmap announcements and community Q&A sessions, the Dating System is expected to include the following mechanics. The final implementation may differ.
Feature | Expected Details |
|---|---|
Date activities | Dedicated date activities beyond gifting and conversation. Shared meals, scenic walks, fishing trips, stargazing events, and arcade visits. |
Location-specific dates | Take your partner to scenic spots, restaurants, the beach, or the Chrono Arcade for unique date scenes with custom dialogue and animations. |
Unique dialogue events | Voiced confession scenes, milestone conversations, and character-specific story beats that deepen each NPC's personality and backstory. |
Relationship stage | A new "Dating" stage between Friend and Partner in the relationship progression timeline. |
Expected Relationship Progression After Update
Stage | Description |
|---|---|
Acquaintance | Initial meeting. NPC appears on the island and can be spoken to. |
Friend | Regular gifting and conversation raises affection. Unlock personal quests. |
Dating | New stage added by the April 2026 update. Engage in date activities and special dialogue events. |
Partner | High-affection milestone. Invite the NPC to move in via the Cohabitation system. |
Cohabitant | The NPC lives at your homestead and participates in daily routines. |
April 28, 2026 Dating System Launch (Patch 0.4.9868)
On April 28, 2026, Seed Sparkle Lab shipped patch 0.4.9868 with the first wave of NPC dating interactions, closing the April roadmap slip and unlocking the long-anticipated dating mechanic for six romanceable characters. The remaining nine romanceable NPCs are scheduled for follow-up patches in May and beyond.
Once Affection with one of the launch-wave characters reaches the required threshold, players can invite that character on a structured date for scripted scenes, exclusive dialogue, and bonus affection points. Dates are separate from daily gifting and conversation; players can take one date per day in addition to the existing social interactions.
Launch Wave Characters
The April 28 launch covers the five mentor NPCs plus the mayor's granddaughter. The remaining romanceable NPCs continue to use the standard friendship and gifting progression until their dating interactions land in a future patch.
Character | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Fishing mentor at AquaBlue Outpost | Date scenes lean into seafront, dock, and lighthouse settings. | |
Crafting mentor at the General Store | Date scenes feature workshop tours and crafting-themed activities. | |
Farming mentor at the Happiness Seed Shop | Date scenes use garden, greenhouse, and orchard locations. | |
Exploration mentor at the Exploration Club | Date scenes draw on hiking, ruins, and high-vantage scenery. | |
Ranching mentor at Green Pasture Ranch | Date scenes center on the ranch, animal interactions, and pastoral walks. | |
Mayor's granddaughter and childhood friend | Date scenes lean on Starsand Town landmarks and shared childhood callbacks. |
Characters Awaiting Dating Interactions
The nine remaining romanceable characters still use the pre-0.4.9868 affection progression and the existing Moving In and Cohabitation endpoint. Seed Sparkle Lab has confirmed dating interactions for these characters will arrive in follow-up patches; no firm schedule has been announced.
Alex, Farmer at Grain Haven
Aurelis, Chef at Aureleaf Kitchen
Loren, Arcade operator at Chrono Arcade
Lunelle, Astronomer
Neona, Mechanic at G-Power Bike
Serena, Hair Stylist at Bloom Atelier
Stella, Pet Shop Owner at Woof and Wow Pets
Sylvain, Musician at Silvan Notes
Youfang, Wandering traveler (Note: Youfang cannot be invited to move in during Early Access)
Date Mechanics At Launch
Each date activity is scripted around the chosen NPC and triggers when the player initiates the Date interaction at the right Affection level. Date scenes typically include voiced or partially voiced dialogue and a cutscene tied to the chosen location. Completing a date grants bonus affection on top of the standard daily gain.
Dates run on a once-per-day limit per player, in addition to the standard daily conversation and one daily gift. Inviting a date during the NPC's working hours or other schedule obligations will result in a polite refusal; players need to schedule dates during the NPC's free time.
April 2026 Roadmap Slippage
As of April 18, 2026, the Dating System has not yet shipped. The April 9 Steam delisting and April 10 Content Adjustment Announcement absorbed Seed Sparkle Lab's April development cycle, and patch 0.4.8191 on April 16 focused on bug fixes rather than new systems. The Level 5 affection cap, Moving In and Cohabitation, and the 15 romanceable NPC roster described above remain the live ceiling on romance progression.
No revised public ship date for the Dating System has been announced. The feature is still confirmed for a future Early Access patch, bundled with the expanded NPC voice content originally listed for April on the Post-Launch Roadmap. Community-requested features such as marriage, engagement, and children remain in the developer's acknowledged long-term plan but are not tied to a specific patch. Updates to this page will follow once Seed Sparkle Lab publishes a firm Dating System release window.

May 21, 2026 Bug Fixes (Patch 0.2374)
Patch 0.2374, released on May 21, 2026, addressed two interaction bugs that affected the post-Spring-Festival quest flow and the 3 Hearts Affection home-entry behavior.
A-Li and Baili Ling: players who had completed the Spring Festival quest could not accept follow-up quests from either NPC. The patch restored normal quest acceptance.
Ginger, Nia, and Gust: players who had reached 3 Hearts Affection could not enter the homes of these three characters. The patch restored home entry at the intended affection threshold.
