Moonlit Forest chests overview
The Moonlit Forest contains 47+ treasure chests spread across multiple interconnected areas. Chests contain furniture blueprints, crafting recipes, rare resources, coins, and boss-specific drops like the Water Arrow blueprint. Many chests are hidden behind Gravestar puzzles. You must free trapped spirits from Gravecrystals to unlock gates and reveal hidden chests. This guide covers every area of the forest in progression order with chest locations, boss strategies, and required items.
Before you enter
Bring a pickaxe (for Gravecrystals and mining), slingshot with ammo (for Runebird and Luminfrog bosses), and a bug net (for Luminwing Butterflies)
Carry Fluorite. You need 5 per campsite restoration (at least 15 total for comfortable progression)
Bring food and healing items. There are no shops inside the forest
A bow with Bomb Arrows is needed for the Glintortle boss in Mural Valley (slingshot does not work)
Evernight Forest (Chests 1-4)
The entry zone of the Moonlit Forest. This is the most accessible area with straightforward chest placement.
Chest | Location | Notable Loot |
|---|---|---|
#1 | Across from the first tent near the forest entrance | Coins, basic materials |
#2 | To the left of the portal entrance | Seeds, fiber |
#3 | Behind the large purple mushroom | Crafting recipe |
#4 | Left of the large purple mushroom (separate from #3) | Blueprint |
Resources in this area: Copper ore, midnight herbs, blue fireflies, blue hydrangeas, mirthshrooms.
Gate of Life (Chests 5-8)
The second area, accessed by crossing from Evernight Forest. Requires 5 Fluorite to restore the campsite. This zone introduces the Gravestar puzzle mechanic and the first boss.
Chest | Location | Notable Loot |
|---|---|---|
#5 | Left side of the waterfall | Resources |
#6 | Right side of the waterfall | Blueprint |
#7 | Near the Gravecrystal spirit path | Coins, materials |
#8 | Behind the Gravestar-locked gate (free 3 spirits to open) | Rare recipe |
Boss: Runebird
The Runebird is the first boss encounter in the Moonlit Forest. It is a flying creature that can be defeated with a slingshot. Keep your distance, dodge its dive attacks, and fire when it hovers. The Runebird drops a chest containing resources and a Gravecrystal with spirit energy for further progression.
Dreamfall Garden (Chests 9-16)
A larger zone reached by crossing bubble-paths over a river. Contains the most chests of any single area plus two boss encounters.
Chest | Location | Notable Loot |
|---|---|---|
#9 | Behind the waterfall (swim through or walk behind the cascade) | Blueprint |
#10 | Near the treasure map dig spot in the garden clearing | Treasure map rewards |
#11 | Above the bubble bridge near the third camp | Recipe |
#12 | Behind the slingshot-activated gate | Resources |
#13-16 | Accessible via low cliff climbing in the upper garden sections | Mixed blueprints, coins, iron ore |
Boss: Luminfrog
A mini-boss that takes approximately 5 slingshot shots to defeat. Relatively easy. Drops coins and resources. Found in a clearing before the upper sections.
Boss: Crystalith
The Crystalith is a stone golem boss with boulder throw and ground ripple attacks. Requires approximately 50-60 slingshot ammo to defeat. Dodge the boulder throws and jump over ripple waves. The Crystalith drops a chest every time it is defeated. It respawns, making it a farmable boss. Before reaching the Crystalith, you must catch 5 Luminwing Butterflies with a bug net to repair the Luminpath column.
Crystalith Hideout (Chests 17-19)
Accessed after defeating the Crystalith boss. A camp is available nearby for rest and saving.
Chest | Location | Notable Loot |
|---|---|---|
#17 | Crystalith boss drop (repeatable when boss respawns) | Rare materials, coins |
#18 | Gravestar reward chest near large purple mushrooms (free 3 Gravestars) | Blueprint |
#19 | Through the doorway leading deeper into the forest | Recipe, resources |
Azure Bay (Chests 20-25)
A branching area with two exploration paths. Contains both Gravestar puzzles and a unique slingshot-activated chest.
Chest | Location | Notable Loot |
|---|---|---|
#20 | Gravestar reward after freeing spirits near the bay entrance | Blueprint |
#21 | Luminfrog clearing near the golden bubble waterfall | Coins |
#22 | Second Gravestar ghost set reward | Recipe |
#23 | Along the branching path toward the double-gate | Resources |
#24 | Near the massive iron gate (requires 2 Ruin Keys to open) | Special blueprint |
#25 | Floating bubble chest. Shoot with slingshot to knock it down | High-value loot |
The massive iron gate in Azure Bay requires two Ruin Keys. One obtained from Zephyria and one from a locked chest on a ledge near a hidden elevator behind a waterfall. The double-gate also requires Explorer profession advancement to progress.
Mural Valley (Chests 26-27)
Accessed via stone stairs with an elevator descending to waterfall sections.
Chest | Location | Notable Loot |
|---|---|---|
#26 | Behind a waterfall in the lower section | Floor Mirror recipe |
#27 | Boss drop from Glintortle | Water Arrow blueprint, Pristine Orbs |
Boss: Glintortle
The Glintortle is a giant turtle boss that is immune to slingshots. You must use a bow with Bomb Arrows to damage it. This is a critical fight because the Glintortle drops the Water Arrow blueprint and Pristine Orbs. Both essential for late-game progression. The Glintortle respawns, so you can farm it for additional Pristine Orbs.
Resources in this area: Three sleep lily varieties, coal ore, lotus leaves. The lower regions also contain flowers unavailable in Starsand Town.
Harvest Yard (Chests 28-31)
An advanced area that cannot be entered without fire and water arrows. You must burn root barriers with a fire arrow and grow vine bridges by shooting stumps with water arrows.
Chest | Location | Notable Loot |
|---|---|---|
#28 | Past the burned root barrier, near the first Harvest Yard camp (5 Fluorite to activate) | Blueprint |
#29 | Across the vine bridge (grown by shooting stump with water arrow) | Fluffweave resource |
#30 | Gravestar puzzle chest (free 3 entrapped spirits on the bridge) | Recipe |
#31 | Hidden alcove past the Gravecrystal area | Rare materials |
Resources in this area: First appearance of Fluffweave. A crafting material only found in this zone and deeper areas.
Darkwater Shore and deeper areas (Chests 32+)
The deepest accessible areas of the Moonlit Forest. Darkwater Shore is a small, gloomy zone accessible by dropping from cliffs in Harvest Yard or riding the waterwheel down.
Contains Eldergrain, midnight herbs, echo bean seeds, and rare fish
Chests near the campsite in Darkwater Shore contain late-game resources
A Gravecrystal with a spirit unlocks waterwheel gears when freed, opening new paths
Grain Haven (connected area) has abundant mineable resources
Final boss: Ruin Guard
The Ruin Guard is the final boss of the Moonlit Forest. It has complex attack patterns and weak-spot mechanics that require careful timing. Upon defeat, an altar appears requiring 3 Moonstone, 3 Spirit Berry, and 1 Prayer to complete the forest's main storyline. Defeating the Ruin Guard marks completion of the Moonlit Forest.
Gravestar puzzle reference
Multiple chests throughout the forest require solving Gravestar puzzles. Quick reference:
Find Gravecrystals (glowing orange stones that resemble Fluorite. Look for the orange color)
Break them with a pickaxe to free the Gravestar (trapped spirit)
The Gravestar follows a predetermined path toward a locked gate or hidden chest
Free all 3 Gravestars in each puzzle set. Once all three arrive, the chest or gate unlocks
If a Gravestar stops, look for repairable bridges or clearable obstacles nearby (e.g., 15 Stone to repair a bridge)
Tips
Bring at least 15 Fluorite into the forest. Each camp costs 5 to restore, and you want at least 3 camps active for save points
The Crystalith and Glintortle bosses respawn. Farm them for repeatable chest drops and rare materials
Stock up on 60+ slingshot ammo for the Crystalith fight alone. Bring even more for general exploration
You must have Bomb Arrows for Glintortle. Slingshots do nothing. Craft them before entering Mural Valley
Carry a bug net. You need 5 Luminwing Butterflies in Dreamfall Garden, and the net is easy to forget
Check behind every waterfall. At least 3 chests in the forest are hidden in waterfall alcoves
Gravecrystals glow orange while Fluorite glows differently. Learn the color difference to spot Gravecrystals efficiently
The floating bubble chest (#25 in Azure Bay) can only be obtained by shooting it with a slingshot. Walk under it and aim up
After defeating the Ruin Guard, bring 3 Moonstone, 3 Spirit Berry, and 1 Prayer to the altar to complete the forest storyline
Use the World Tree back at Hopeland to generate additional chests passively while you explore the forest
