Loren

Overview

Loren runs the Chrono Arcade northeast of central Starsand Town, near the Community Center. He is a relatively recent arrival to Starsand Island, having relocated specifically to find clean air for his younger sister, Momo, who was diagnosed with a congenital lung condition. Using part of his savings from a previous career in online gaming, he established the arcade to make ends meet while quietly working on his own indie game projects.

Personality

Loren is cheerful and laid-back, prioritizing fun over profit. He does not care much about whether the arcade is turning a profit; what matters to him is that everyone is having a good time. He maintains a polite, almost careful distance around strangers, but beneath that reserved exterior he is a gentle protector at heart.

He can seem distant at first because of his long list of responsibilities: running the arcade, caring for Momo, and developing his indie video game project. You might not be high on his priority list initially. Once you build a relationship with him, though, he turns out to be a supportive and easygoing partner who always puts family first.

Background

At age 18, Loren became the sole guardian of his two-year-old sister Momo after she was diagnosed with a congenital lung condition. Knowing the city air would only make things worse, Loren made a difficult decision at the peak of his career: he retired from professional online gaming at twenty and relocated to the clean, fresh air of Starsand Island.

Loren was famously skilled in a popular online game, but he avoids displaying this talent publicly on the island. He poured his savings into opening Chrono Arcade to support himself and Momo. Since the arcade opened, Momo appears happier, and the business has boomed with islanders and visitors alike.

Outside of managing the arcade, Loren spends time fixing up machines with Zerine and working on his indie game. His days follow a comfortable routine of shopping at Zerine's General Store, dining at Aureleaf Kitchen, and picking up sugar paintings for Momo. During winter, he dedicates extra free time to Momo, including pet shop visits and sharing sweets together on a park bench.

Location and Schedule

Loren is usually at the Chrono Arcade counter during shop hours (08:00 to 22:00). If he is not at the counter, check around the arcade machines. He is often tinkering with them. His bedroom is located above the Chrono Arcade, but you need at least 3 hearts before you can enter.

Gift Preferences

Loren accepts one gift per day. Loved gifts give +15 Affection Points and liked gifts give +10. Unlike most characters, Loren prefers metals, crafted components, and coffee drinks over flowers. See the Gift Guide for a full comparison of all characters' preferences.

Loren's loved gifts stand out from every other character on the island. He favors refined metals, electronic components, and coffee beverages. If you have access to a Furnace or Separator, keeping him supplied with ingots is straightforward.

Disliked and Hated Gifts

Loren is notably picky compared to other characters. He is one of the only NPCs who hates Moonflower, a gift that nearly every other character enjoys. He also dislikes raw Copper ore, even though he loves Copper Ingots. Note the difference: smelt the ore first, then gift the ingot. Avoid flowers entirely with Loren; stick to metals, coffee, and cooked food.

Romance

Loren's romance is low-pressure and fun-focused. He is initially distant because of his responsibilities caring for Momo and running the arcade, but he opens up once you invest time in the relationship. His unique interactions include binge-watching TV together.
