Overview
Cooking in Crimson Desert is a practical survival skill that provides meaningful combat and exploration advantages. Meals restore Health, Spirit, and Stamina while also granting temporary buffs that give you an edge in tough encounters. Ingredients come from fishing, hunting, gathering, farming, and purchasing from merchants. You can cook at any bonfire found in the world or at the Greymane Camp's dedicated cooking area.
Where to Cook
Bonfires
Bonfires are scattered throughout the open world of Pywel. Whenever you encounter one, you can interact with it to access the cooking interface. Bonfires serve as natural rest points during exploration, making them convenient for preparing meals before entering a dangerous area or after a tough fight.
Greymane Camp Cooking Area
The Greymane Camp has a dedicated cooking area where you can prepare meals using ingredients from your inventory, your farm, or supplies purchased from the camp's food shop. The camp cooking area functions the same as bonfires but benefits from the convenience of having storage, vendors, and other facilities nearby.
Meal Effects
Consuming cooked meals provides the following types of benefits:
Effect Type | Description |
|---|---|
Health restoration | Directly replenishes your Health bar. The amount varies by recipe and ingredient quality. |
Spirit restoration | Recovers Spirit, which is used for special abilities and Abyss-powered techniques. |
Stamina restoration | Refills the Stamina gauge used for sprinting, climbing, dodging, and blocking. |
Temporary buffs | Some meals provide stat boosts or enhanced recovery rates for a limited duration. |
Cooking meals is more cost-effective than buying potions from merchants, making it an essential skill for players looking to manage their resources efficiently.
Recipe Discovery
Recipes are not all available from the start. They are discovered through several methods:
Exploration: Finding recipe scrolls or notes in the world while exploring Pywel.
NPC conversations: Speaking to cooks, food vendors, and other food-related NPCs can teach new recipes.
Merchant purchases: Some recipes can be bought directly from merchants in towns and settlements.
Experimentation: Combining ingredients at a bonfire or camp cooking station may reveal new recipes.
The Knowledge System includes 355 crafting manuals across all crafting disciplines. Cooking recipes are part of this total, giving completionists another reason to seek out every recipe.
Ingredient Sources
Source | Method | Ingredient Types |
|---|---|---|
Hunting | Kill wildlife with weapons or bows while exploring | Meat, hides, animal parts |
Fishing | Use a fishing rod at rivers, lakes, or coastal areas | Freshwater fish, saltwater fish |
Gathering | Harvest plants, flowers, and herbs from the environment | Vegetables, herbs, spices, flowers |
Mining | Mine ore veins with a pickaxe | Salt, mineral ingredients used in some recipes |
Farming | Grow crops at the Greymane Camp's farm | Crops, vegetables, farming-exclusive ingredients |
Ranch | Raise animals at the Greymane Camp's ranch | Milk, eggs, and other animal products |
Purchasing | Buy from merchants and the camp food shop | Any ingredients the vendor stocks |
Cooking and the Greymane Camp
The Greymane Camp's farm and ranch provide a renewable source of cooking ingredients. As you upgrade the camp, the variety and volume of ingredients you can produce increases. This creates a cycle where investing in camp infrastructure directly translates to better meal options.
Farm: Grow crops that serve as base ingredients for many recipes. Expand the farm to increase crop variety.
Ranch: Raise animals like cows and pigs. Animals produce ingredients over time and can also be butchered for meat and hides.
Food shop: The camp vendor sells prepared food and raw ingredients. Useful when you need a quick restock.
Alchemy vs. Cooking
While cooking focuses on meals that restore Health, Spirit, and Stamina with temporary buffs, alchemy produces medicines and combat-enhancing potions. Alchemy uses different ingredients (primarily plants and insects) and is performed at the alchemy lab in the Greymane Camp. Both systems complement each other:
System | Products | Primary Ingredients |
|---|---|---|
Cooking | Meals that restore Health/Spirit/Stamina with temporary buffs | Meat, fish, vegetables, crops, animal products |
Alchemy | Medicines, potions, dyes, combat-enhancing items | Plants, insects, flowers, herbs |
Tips
Cook in bulk before heading into a new region or tackling a difficult boss. Running out of food mid-exploration is a common mistake.
Fish are among the easiest ingredients to farm early on. Visit the Nas River dock regularly.
Upgrade the Greymane Camp's farm and ranch as soon as you can. The passive ingredient generation saves significant time in the long run.
Keep an eye on the food shop at camp. The vendor restocks periodically and may have ingredients you cannot easily gather yourself.
Experiment with different ingredient combinations at bonfires. Discovering new recipes adds to your Knowledge System progress.
Meals are more cost-effective than merchant-bought healing items. Prioritize cooking over purchasing potions whenever possible.
Some ingredients may only be available in specific regions. Plan your gathering routes to maximize ingredient variety.
