Overview
Deer are common grazing animals found throughout the forests and woodlands of Pywel in Crimson Desert. They are one of the most important early-game hunting targets, offering a reliable supply of meat for cooking and crafting materials for equipment upgrades. Deer frequently appear in groups of five or more, making them an efficient resource when found.
Location and Habitat
Deer spawn across the Hernand region and other forested areas of Pywel. They prefer open woodlands where they can graze on grass and browse on low-hanging branches. Groups of five or more deer are commonly found together, which makes locating a herd particularly rewarding since each animal yields multiple resources. Players on horseback can cover ground quickly and spot deer herds from a distance.
Hunting Drops
Each deer drops 3 to 4 pieces of meat when killed and skinned, making a single herd of five deer a source of approximately 15 to 20 meat in one spot. Deer are classified as smaller animals for skinning purposes:
Drop | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Meat (3-4) | Cooking ingredient | One of the best meat-per-encounter ratios in the game |
Crafting material | Shared drop with wolves and goats | |
Crafting material | Deer produce Short Hair Hide alongside cows and sheep |
Behavior
Deer are timid herbivores that flee at the first sign of danger. They will bolt as soon as they detect a player approaching, making stealth important for efficient hunting. Using a bow from a concealed position allows you to take down deer before they scatter. If you startle a herd, riding after them on a horse gives you the speed to keep up and take shots while mounted.
Meat Farming
Deer are widely considered the best early-game source of meat. Since Crimson Desert has no passive health regeneration, players must eat cooked food to restore HP. Meat obtained from hunting deer can be cooked at a cooking pot (found in Hernand Town) into Grilled Meat, which restores 80 HP. A single deer herd can supply enough meat for several exploration sessions.
Ride through wooded areas on horseback and watch for groups of 5 or more deer.
Each deer gives 3-4 meat, so a herd of 5 yields around 15-20 raw meat.
Small animals also give meat, so pick up any additional wildlife you encounter while hunting deer.
Cook all raw meat into Grilled Meat as soon as possible to free up inventory space.
Tips
Deer are the most efficient meat source in the early game. Prioritize hunting them before more dangerous animals.
Short Hair Hide from deer is needed for the "When Animals Die" Hunting Challenge.
Use the Knowledge Codex to track where you have encountered deer previously.
Deer herds respawn, so returning to known locations is a reliable farming strategy.
