Overview
Challenges in Crimson Desert are activities that test players across combatexplorationlife skillsand competitive events. Completing them provides Abyss ArtifactsAbyss Gearskill upgradestrophiesand other valuable rewards. The Challenge system is divided into five categories: Exploration, Mastery, Combat, Life, and Minigame. Each category contains multiple subcategories, and progress is tracked through the Challenge menu.
the game contains over 350 challenges spread across all five categories. The approximate distribution is: Exploration (~214), Mastery (~64), Combat (~30), Life (~47), and Minigame (~25). The Exploration category is by far the largest, comprising more than half of all challenges.
How to Unlock Challenges
Most Challenges are unlocked by collecting Sealed Abyss Artifactsglowing collectibles scattered across the continent of Pywel. There are 141 Sealed Abyss Artifacts in total. Each artifact is tied to a specific challenge; once you pick one up, its associated challenge appears in the Challenge menu.

Sealed Abyss Artifacts are not marked on the world mapbut they appear as purple icons on the minimap when you get close. You can also use the Guiding Light ability (activated with L1+R1 on PlayStation, LB+RB on Xbox, or Ctrl+Left Click on PC) to detect a blue shimmer when an artifact is nearby. Artifacts are commonly found along roads and near points of interest.
Important: Challenge progress only counts after you have collected the corresponding Sealed Abyss Artifact. Progress made before collecting the artifact does not apply retroactively, except for certain cumulative requirements such as total enemy kills or distance traveled.
Exploration Challenges are the exception to this rule. They do not require Sealed Abyss Artifacts and are unlocked simply by discovering puzzle locations in the open world. Minigame Challenges unlock the first time you interact with a minigame location.
For a deeper explanation of how artifacts function within the progression systemsee the Artifacts and Abyss Fragments article. That page covers the different types of artifacts, how they interact with the skill treeand how to efficiently farm them through combat and quests.
Finding Sealed Artifacts
Sealed Abyss Artifacts are most commonly found at shrines and crossroads along main roads throughout Pywel. On the map, they appear as a purple cube icon once you are close enough for the minimap to detect them. The Guiding Light ability (L1+R1 on PlayStation, LB+RB on Xbox, Ctrl+Left Click on PC) still works to detect nearby artifacts, but many players find the purple cube icon is sufficient when systematically sweeping roadside shrines.
A second reliable technique for locating distant artifacts is to climb to a high vantage point and scan the surrounding landscape. Sealed artifacts reflect light back toward the playercreating a visible glint against the terrain. This works particularly well from elevated ridges, Spire summits, and tall cliff faces where you have a clear line of sight across an entire region. Combining roadside shrine checks with high-altitude light scanning is the most efficient way to sweep a region for uncollected artifacts.
Artifact Gauge
The Artifact Gauge is a yellow bar displayed in the bottom left corner of the screen, just below the minimap. It fills gradually as you deal damage during combat. When the gauge reaches its maximum, it automatically converts into a free Abyss Artifact (one skill point). This provides a passive source of skill points alongside the challenge system and sealed artifact collection, rewarding players who engage in sustained combat.
The fill rate of the Artifact Gauge can be increased by equipping Abyss Gear that provides a percentage bonus to skill XP gain. Stacking multiple pieces of gear with this stat bonus causes the gauge to fill noticeably faster during combat encounters. For players focused on rapid skill tree progression, selecting Abyss Gear with skill XP gain bonuses is one of the most effective strategies. The gauge resets to empty after each conversion and begins filling again immediately, so extended combat sessions can yield multiple free skill points.
Rewards
When you complete a challenge, its associated Sealed Abyss Artifact begins pulsating in your inventory. Using the artifact at that point converts it into one of two reward types:
Abyss Artifacts: Used to unlock and upgrade nodes on the skill tree. These function as skill points and are the primary reward for most challenges.
Abyss GearEquippable items that can be slotted into weapons and armor through the witch. These enhance specific combat stats or abilities.
Some challenges also grant specific skill upgrades (such as Destruction IBreath of Life Ior Composure I)trophiesor recipe knowledge upon completion.
Achievement and Trophy Requirements
Completing every challenge across all five categories is required for the Platinum trophy on PlayStation 5 and the full 1000 Gamerscore on Xbox Series X|S. Since Mastery, Combat, and Life Challenges are each gated behind Sealed Abyss Artifactsthis means players must collect all 141 Sealed Abyss Artifacts to even access every challenge. Exploration and Minigame Challenges, which do not require artifacts, still contribute to the overall completion total.
The All Challenges guide provides a full checklist organized by category. For the artifact collection component, the Sealed Abyss Artifact Locations page maps every artifact across Pywel's regions. Players aiming for 100% completion should plan to sweep each region systematically using the Kliff's Guiding Light ability to locate artifacts that are off the beaten path.
Note that some challenges have prerequisites beyond just owning the artifact. Certain Mastery Challenges require specific weapons to be crafted or purchased first, and several Life Challenges depend on reaching particular settlements or unlocking specific quest chains. Check individual challenge descriptions for any additional requirements before attempting them.

Exploration Challenges
Exploration Challenges are puzzles and discoveries found directly in the open world. They appear on the map as white search areas marked with a question mark ("?") icon labeled Mysterious Energy. Unlike Mastery, Combat, and Life ChallengesExploration Challenges do not require Sealed Abyss Artifacts to unlock. Simply traveling to a location and interacting with it is enough to begin the challenge. Completing an Exploration Challenge rewards an Abyss Artifactwhich can be spent on the skill tree to learn new abilities or upgrade existing ones.
Each Exploration Challenge is tied to an Abyss Cresseta small glowing pillar that appears at the end of a puzzle or hidden area. Walking up to the cresset displays a "Take" prompt. Collecting the artifact from the cresset also activates it as a fast travel point, so completing exploration challenges steadily expands your network of teleport destinations across Pywel. You can view the Abyss layer of the map by pressing R3 (PlayStation), RS (Xbox), or the designated key on PC to toggle between the normal world map and the Abyss overlay.
The four Exploration subcategories contain a combined 145 challenges: 40 in The Abyss, 60 in Secret Places, 37 in Ancient Ruins, and 8 in Spires. Because none of them require Sealed Abyss Artifacts, they are the most accessible challenges in the game and a reliable source of early Abyss Artifacts for character progression.
Note: The four subcategories above (The Abyss, Secret Places, Ancient Ruins, and Spires) are the most prominent. data indicates the full Exploration category actually contains nine subcategories including Mazes, ConstellationsSanctumsPuzzles, and one additional grouping, bringing the total to approximately 214 challenges. The All Challenges page provides the complete breakdown with trophy/achievement tracking for each subcategory.
Beyond these four primary types, the Exploration category also includes Special Chambers (rare dungeon-like instances with elaborate multi-room puzzles) and Winding Paths (sometimes called Mazes), which test parkour ability and environmental puzzle-solving in enclosed spaces. Both subcategories are detailed in their own sections below.
The Abyss (Restoration)
These 40 challenges involve entering Abyss locations and restoring dormant Abyss Nexus structures scattered throughout Pywel. Some Abyss sites are accessed naturally during main questswhile others are standalone puzzle dungeons hidden behind environmental puzzles or guarded by enemies. The restoration method varies by site: some require rerouting power through wall panels using Axiom Forceothers involve placing power cores into receptacles, and a few demand platforming sequences using Force Palm Jump combinations to reach elevated mechanisms.
Each Abyss challenge typically functions as a chain of interconnected puzzles. Entering an Abyss location does not present a single puzzle to solve; instead, each site contains multiple rooms or stages that must be completed in sequence. Successfully clearing the final stage in the chain grants an Abyss Artifact (one skill point) and activates the Abyss Cresset as a fast travel point. The chain structure means that Abyss challenges generally take longer to complete than other Exploration subcategories, but they provide a more substantial puzzle-solving experience and guaranteed fast travel expansion.
A common mechanic across Abyss challenges is the triangle forcefield barrier. These barriers block progression until the player finds and activates nearby Axiom Force switches, then uses directional controls to open pathways. Many Abyss puzzles also require the player to manipulate blue power spheres (referred to as CPUs in some guides) by grabbing them with Axiom Force and placing them into specific sockets.
The table below lists notable Abyss (Restoration) challenge locations with their puzzle types. Completing each one yields an Abyss Artifact and activates a fast travel point on the Abyss map layer.
Challenge | Region | Puzzle Type | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
Abyss | Activate an Abyss power supply; navigate platforms | ||
Locate and collect artifact from a pedestal near the northeast edge | |||
Abyss | Platforming with Crouch Force Palm and Axiom Forceglide through laser grids | ||
Precipice of Truth | Abyss | Destroy orbs to extract power cores; place cores to activate wind generators | |
The Secret Garden | Abyss (post-Scholastone Institute) | Redirect light beams using mirrors; repair cables and place CPUs | |
Vault of Vengeance | Abyss | Place cubes on pressure plates; shoot lit circles with Focused Shot in succession | |
Abyss | Shoot red and blue squares simultaneously using Focused Shot from ground and mid-air | ||
Altar of Solitude | Abyss | Extract and reposition CPUs through wall gaps; flip floor panels to open paths | Abyss ArtifactHaste II Abyssal Gear |
Ice Cradle | Abyss | Play musical notes in sequence (5-1-2-3-4-5-1-1); repair cables and activate gears | |
Crow's Nest | Abyss | Navigate to the Abyss Nexus and restore it | |
Crescent Skybridge | Abyss (post-Spire of Soaring) | Fix broken device; align floating orbs with yellow receptacles using Axiom Force | |
Abyss | Reach the top of the sanctorum and activate its mechanism |
Some Abyss challenges become accessible only after reaching specific story chapters. The Secret Garden, for example, requires completing the Scholastone Institute mission, and the Crescent Skybridge opens after activating the Spire of Soaring during Chapter 5. Players working toward 100% completion should revisit the Abyss map layer periodically as the story progresses to check for newly accessible sites.
Secret Places (Wandering Footsteps)
The largest Exploration subcategory with 60 challenges. Secret Places are hidden Abyss Cressets tucked away in locations that reward thorough exploration. When you are close to one, the area appears on your map as a "Mysterious Energy" marker. The cresset itself is not visible on the map; you need to physically search the area to find it. Secret Places include concealed caveselevated vantage points, underwater passages, cliff ledges accessible only by glidingand other off-the-beaten-path locations.
Finding a Secret Place and collecting its Abyss Cresset counts as a completed challenge. There is no puzzle to solve at most Secret Places; the challenge lies in reaching the cresset. Some require creative use of traversal abilities like glidingclimbing, or swimming. Others are simply well-hidden behind destructible objects or along paths that are easy to overlook.
The table below lists notable Secret Places. Many are concentrated in mountainous terrain and along coastlines where the vertical landscape creates natural hiding spots.
Secret Place | Region | How to Reach |
|---|---|---|
Climb to the summit of the pillar formation east of the Equinsher Saddlery | ||
A Guide in the Darkness | Follow the main path to the higher sections; approach the door until the floor collapses, then explore the ruins below | |
An Unreachable End | Climb the tall stone pillar at the southern edge of the region to reach the cresset at the top | |
Subtle Gap | Find the small cave entrance within the Raiders Camp and explore it | |
Located beside the cabin on the Snowy Plateau at the top of the Everfrost mountains | ||
Giant Hand of Everfrost | Search for the cresset near the giant hand formation in the Everfrost region |
Because Secret Places do not require artifacts, combat, or puzzle-solving, they are ideal targets during the early game. Riders passing through a new region on horseback should watch the minimap for purple icons indicating nearby Mysterious Energy and detour to collect them. Each one grants an Abyss Artifact with no prerequisite, making them one of the most efficient sources of skill points in the game.
Ancient Ruins (The Thread in the Forest)
37 challenges centered around ancient ruin sites. Each ruin contains a puzzle that must be solved to unlock the Abyss Cresset inside. Puzzle types vary by location and range from rotating statues and aligning pillars to draining watermatching symbols, and redirecting light beams. Ruins are found across all regions of Pywelwith higher concentrations in forested and highland areas. Some ruins tie into the Reunion quest early in the game, introducing players to the puzzle mechanics they will encounter throughout the rest of the world.
The table below lists known Ancient Ruins with their puzzle types and solution hints:
Ruin | Region | Puzzle Type | Solution Hint |
|---|---|---|---|
North of Hernand | Repair a broken fountain | Use a Stab move to jam your sword into the square-shaped slits on each pillar, then push the movement stick to rotate each pillar into alignment | |
Align wheel mechanisms | A mural inside the ruins shows the correct dial positions; turn three dials to match the mural patterns to unseal the wall | ||
Order pillars in correct sequence | Pillar 1 is fixed; move pillars 2-3-4 halfway up, then move pillars 3-4-5 halfway up, then align pillars 2 and 5 with the rest | ||
Northwest of Hernand | Stone gate and simultaneous buttons | Use Nature's Grasp to lift the stone gate, then use Focus Palm on the giant buttons to press them all at the same time | |
Orient statues to face center | Rotate the statues using the dials behind them until every statue faces the Abyss Cresset at the center | ||
Azure Moon Labyrinth Ruins | Button activation in labyrinth | A mural within the labyrinth shows the location of five trees in Pororinindicating the correct buttons to press | |
Steel Mountains Ruins | Bell and musical notes | Follow the note symbols carved into the walls and hit the bell corresponding to each symbol in order | |
Precipice of Echoes Ruins | Tile path matching | Step on a sequence of tiles that links two identical icons without stepping on any other symbols to complete the grid | |
Haunted Hill Ruins | West of Abyss Nexus | Water drainage mechanism | Use Focus on the underwater mechanism to drain the water, then use Visione to find the Memory scene and light all five lanterns |
Halssius Conflux Ruins | Dial matching with statues | Rotate the central dial to match the symbols of the illuminated statues around the chamber | |
Axiom Archive Ruins | Locate hidden artifact | Head northeast through the archive to find the artifact on a pedestal near the edge | |
Ethereal Pathway Ruins | Abyss | Activate Abyss power supply | Navigate platforms and restore the power link using Axiom Force |
The first Ancient Ruins puzzle most players encounter is during the Reunion quest in Chapter 1, where Kliff follows a cat to ruins near Hernand. This introduction teaches the core mechanic of using the sword's Stab move to interact with slotted pillars. Later ruins build on this foundation with more complex multi-step puzzles involving Axiom Force abilities that the player acquires through story progression.
Special Chambers
There are six Special Chambers across Pywel, each functioning as a standalone dungeon with unique puzzle mechanics. The first two that most players encounter are the Dragonstone Chamber and the Azure Moon Labyrinth. Completing either of these chambers rewards Memories of Abundance Tidewhich reveal the locations of hidden waterfall caves throughout the world. These caves contain additional loot and exploration content that would remain undiscovered without the memories to guide you.
Special Chambers are significantly more elaborate than standard Ancient Ruins puzzles. They often require abilities gained through later story chapters and combine platformingAxiom Force manipulation, and environmental observation across multiple connected rooms. Players should expect each chamber to take considerably longer than a typical Ancient Ruins puzzle. The remaining four chambers are spread across Pywel's more remote regions and become progressively more challenging.
Winding Paths and Mazes
Winding Paths are Exploration Challenges that focus on parkour and environmental puzzle-solving within maze-like structures. Unlike Ancient Ruins, which center on logic puzzles, Winding Paths test movement precision: wall runs, timed jumps, grapple swings, and platform sequences. One notable example is the Ancient Rift in Pailunewhich requires chaining multiple traversal techniques to navigate a crumbling interior. Completing a Winding Path rewards an Abyss Artifact (one skill point), consistent with other Exploration subcategories.
Winding Paths are not marked differently from other Mysterious Energy locations on the minimap. Players will only discover whether a location is a Winding Path or another Exploration type once they arrive and begin interacting with it. The parkour difficulty varies significantly between locations, with some requiring precise timing on consecutive jumps and others being more forgiving.
Spires (Land Meets Sky)
8 challenges that require reaching the summit of tall Spire structures and activating the mechanism at the top. These are primarily traversal and puzzle challenges that test climbing ability, Axiom Force manipulation, and environmental puzzle-solving. Several Spires are encountered during main story questswhile others are optional locations that can be tackled at any time after the player gains the necessary abilities. Activating a Spire typically triggers a cutscene and may unlock access to higher sections of the Abyss.
Spire | Region | Puzzle Type | Story Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
Spire of Soaring | Reroute power through wall panels using Axiom Forceride wind platforms upward; rotate circular wall panel to align power lines | ||
South of Hernand (near Scholastone Institute) | Collect three Engraved Stones from wall buttons; position four symbols (infinity, circle, square, triangle) in correct slots on the wall | ||
Push mirror plinths along grooves to redirect a beam of light onto the red crystal at the back; second area uses five movable mirrors | |||
Light all seven stone lanterns inside the Spire using fire abilities or lit arrows | Optional (no main quest) | ||
South of Hernandpast Pororin Village | Burn thorny vines with Blinding FlashConcentrated Light or fire arrows; solve riddles involving objects (pebble, telescope, pen tip) | Optional (no main quest) | |
Crescent Skybridge | Abyss (above Spire of Soaring) | Repair broken device; control floating orbs and align them with yellow dish receptacles | Post-Spire of Soaring |
The Spire of Soaring and Spire of the Stars are visited as part of the main campaign and cannot be missed. The Spire of the Sun is encountered during Chapter 9. The Spire of Frost and Spire of Insight are entirely optional; players who want to complete them should look for tower structures visible on the horizon in their respective regions. The Crescent Skybridge is a special case that becomes accessible in the Abyss layer after activating the Spire of Soaring.
For the Spire of Soaring, enter through a cave on the right side of the structure rather than the main door, which is blocked. Use wind platforms to glide upward, then rotate the wall panels using Axiom Force (hold L3, rotate the right stick) to route power from left to right. Do not remove blue power spheres from their sockets during this process. After the middle platform rises, glide up and rotate the circular wall panel twice to create a left-bottom-right power configuration. Stay on the central platform and it will carry you skyward into the Abyss over approximately two minutes.
For the Spire of the Starsuse Force Palm on three wall buttons in the side corridors to collect Engraved Stones. Insert them into the empty slots on the main wall. The correct symbol order from top to bottom is: infinity, circle, square, triangle. The circle symbol is already in position. Climb the wall levers to move each symbol into its correct slot. If a symbol goes too far, use Force Palm at the base to reset it.
Exploration Challenge Tips
Exploration Challenges can be completed at any point in the game since they have no artifact prerequisites. Prioritize them early for a steady supply of Abyss Artifacts to fuel your skill tree.
Watch the minimap for purple icons while traveling between locations. These indicate a Mysterious Energy source nearby, which may be a Secret Place, Ancient Ruins, or an Abyss site.
Use Kliff's Guiding Light ability (L1+R1 on PlayStation, LB+RB on Xbox, Ctrl+Left Click on PC) while exploring. The blue shimmer it produces can help locate hidden cressets even when the minimap icon is absent.
Some Ancient Ruins puzzles require abilities learned later in the story. If a ruin seems impossible, note its location and return after advancing the main quest.
Spire of Frost and Spire of Insight are optional and easy to overlook. Look for tall tower structures on the horizon when exploring the northern regions and the area south of Hernand.
Each completed Exploration Challenge also activates a fast travel point. Systematically clearing a region's exploration challenges before moving on to the next makes subsequent backtracking much faster.
Mastery Challenges
Mastery Challenges test weapon proficiency and mounted combat skill. They are organized by weapon type, with each category containing a series of increasingly difficult trials. All Mastery Challenges fall under the Goyen's Advice reward track and require Sealed Abyss Artifacts to unlock.
For detailed walkthroughs of each weapon's trials, see the individual challenge guides: Sword ChallengesShield ChallengesBow ChallengesSpear Challengesand Horse Challenges. Each guide lists every trial objective, recommended loadout, and tips for completing them efficiently.
Weapon Mastery
Each Mastery Challenge requires a specific weapon type to complete. Conveniently, a weapon of the correct type is usually found nearby the sealed artifact that unlocks the challenge. If you pick up a sword challenge artifact at a roadside shrine, there is likely a sword available in the immediate vicinity: on the ground, in a chest, or dropped by a nearby enemy. This design ensures players can attempt challenges as soon as they find the artifact without needing to backtrack to a vendor.
Weapon Type | Challenges | Example Objectives |
|---|---|---|
6 | Defeat 3 enemies in 30 seconds; defeat 3 enemies without taking damage; defeat 3 enemies using the Stab attack | |
6 | Defeat 3 enemies using shield attacks; defeat 5 enemies without taking damage | |
6 | Defeat 5 enemies in 60 seconds using ranged attacks | |
5 | Complete weapon-specific combat trials with spear techniques | |
Two-Handed Weapon | 6 | Complete heavy weapon combat trials |
5 | Complete cannon-specific combat trials | |
Rapier and Shield | 5 | Complete fencing-style combat trials |
5 | Complete firearm combat trials | |
Special Weapons | 10 | Complete trials using unique or Abyss-infused weapons |
10 | Travel specified routes while mounted; complete mounted combat objectives |
Notable Mastery Challenges
Challenge | Weapon | Objective | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
Sword | Defeat 3 enemies in 30 seconds | ||
Sword of Trials III | Sword | Defeat 3 enemies without taking damage | |
Sword of Trials V | Sword | Defeat 3 enemies using the Stab attack | |
Bow Aimed at Fate I | Bow | Defeat 5 enemies in 60 seconds | |
Shield of Unchanging Will I | Shield | Defeat 3 enemies with shield | |
Shield of Unchanging Will IV | Shield | Defeat 5 enemies without taking damage | Fortitude IIFaded Abyss Artifact |
Harmonious Hooves IV | Horse | Travel from Sunset Valley to Varnia mounted | Companionship IIFaded Abyss Artifact |

Sword challenge examples: Beyond the basic "defeat 3 enemies in 30 seconds" trial, higher-tier sword challenges require precision kills. One example demands landing a killing blow on 3 enemies simultaneously with Turning Slashwhich requires positioning enemies close together and timing the wide arc of the attack so that all three die in a single swing. This is one of the more difficult Mastery challenges due to the precise setup required.
Shield challenge details: Shield challenges require you to actually kill enemies using shield attacksnot simply block while finishing them with your primary weapon. The technique for dealing shield damage is to block an incoming attack and then press the heavy attack button while still holding block. This executes a shield bash that deals damage. For challenges requiring defeating 5 enemies without taking damage using a shield, every kill must come from this block-then-heavy counter technique. This makes shield challenges among the most technical in the Mastery category.
Mount Challenges
The 10 Horse challenges test mounted travel and combat. These include objectives such as riding a specific mount over a set distance without dismounting, completing timed routes between named locations, and performing mounted combat maneuvers. Some mount challenges require using specific horse breedsso players should acquire and stable multiple horses across Pywel's different stables to ensure they have the right mount available when needed.
Combat Challenges
Combat Challenges focus on battle techniques, tactical situations, and squad-based operations. They are grouped into three subcategories of 10 challenges each, all falling under the Goyen's Advice reward track.
Training
Training challenges teach and test foundational combat mechanics such as movement, positioning, and environmental awareness.
Challenge | Objective | Reward |
|---|---|---|
Walk 10 meters on a rooftop beam or tightrope | ||
Pole vault 5 times in 30 seconds | ||
Descend 100 meters continuously | ||
Complete grapple-based combat training | Goyen's Advice |
Universal Combat Challenges
Some Mastery and Combat challenges are not tied to any specific weapon and instead test universal movement and utility skills. Examples include sliding 50 meters continuously down a slopewalking across a rope or tightrope without falling (the Keeping Balance on the Wind challenge), and healing an ally with Force Palm during combat (the Desperate Rescue challenge in the Battle subcategory). These universal challenges use techniques available regardless of weapon loadout and are generally among the more accessible challenges once you know the mechanic involved.
Battle
Battle challenges involve direct combat scenarios such as healing allies, executing combo chains, and fighting multiple enemies simultaneously.
Challenge | Objective | Reward |
|---|---|---|
Heal allies 3 times with Healing Force Palm | ||
Seven Consecutive Strikes | Land 7 consecutive hits without being interrupted | Goyen's Advice |
Flash | Complete a rapid-strike combat challenge | Goyen's Advice |
Operation
Operation challenges test stealthranged precision, and tactical execution in more complex combat scenarios.
Operation challenges have niche requirements that go beyond standard combat. One example requires the player to wear a Black Bear helmet and defeat one-eyed jackals while disguised. This means acquiring the helmet from the Black Bears faction (through looting, theft, or trading) and then locating and defeating the specific enemy type while wearing it. These contextual requirements make Operation challenges feel distinct from the straightforward combat trials in the Training and Battle subcategories.
Challenge | Objective | Reward |
|---|---|---|
Complete a stealth-based elimination challenge | Goyen's Advice | |
Defeat enemies from concealment | Goyen's Advice | |
Gunshot | Complete a ranged precision challenge | Goyen's Advice |
Life Challenges
Life Challenges cover huntinggatheringcraftingtradingand outlaw activities. They are divided into five subcategories with different reward tracks depending on the type.

The Above the Law challenges center on outlaw and subterfuge activities. The Night of the Silent Banner Pike challenge requires destroying 10 banner pikes without being detected by guards or NPCstesting stealth timing and approach routes. The Trespassing challenge requires opening 20 locked doors across Pywel, encouraging investment in lockpicking tools and practice with the lock minigame. Other challenges in this category involve stealing goats and selling them at distant markets, which requires transporting stolen livestock without being caught by patrols or the animal's owner. These activities tie into the reputation and faction systems, as getting caught may have consequences with local NPCs.
Challenge | Objective | Reward |
|---|---|---|
Destroy 10 banner pikes without being detected | ||
Open 20 locked doors | Shadow's Touch I | |
Complete a nighttime stealth operation | Master Du's Dare |
Challenges and Changes (Alustin's Trials)
9 challenges tied to the Greymane mercenaries' journey and personal growth. These are often linked to story progression and faction milestones.
A key challenge in this subcategory involves tracking and finding all 20 Greymanes scattered across Pywel after the mercenary band is shattered by the Black Bears. This is a primary progression driver in the early-to-mid game: each recovered companion returns to the Greymane Camp and becomes available for dispatch missions and combat support. The Challenges and Changes category tracks this reunion progress alongside other personal growth milestones for Kliff and the Greymanes as a whole.
Challenge | Objective | Reward |
|---|---|---|
Complete an Abyss-related milestone challenge | Alustin's Trials | |
Under the Ashen Banner Pike | Complete a faction-related objective | Alustin's Trials |
Complete a major story milestone | Alustin's Trials |
Minigame Challenges
Minigame Challenges are competitive activities unlocked by visiting minigame locations for the first time. They do not require Sealed Abyss Artifacts. These challenges set specific win conditions within each minigame, such as consecutive victories or tournament wins.
Challenge | Minigame | Objective | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
Win 3 consecutive Duo matches | Varies | ||
Win 4 consecutive Spear Duels | Trophy: Spear Duel | ||
Win 4 Arm Wrestling matches | |||
Steel Fist | Win the Boxing tournament | Varies | |
Silver Trigger | Win the Gun Shooting contest |
Tips
Use the Guiding Light ability frequently while exploring. The blue shimmer it produces when a Sealed Abyss Artifact is nearby saves significant time compared to relying solely on the minimap icon.
Sealed Abyss Artifacts are commonly found along roads and paths between major locations. Check the sides of main routes when traveling between towns.
Exploration Challenges (Ancient Ruins puzzles, Secret Places) can be completed at any time since they do not require artifacts. Tackle these early for free Abyss Artifacts.
For Mastery Challenges, practice the required weapon type before attempting timed trials. Equip relevant Abyss Gear that enhances damage or attack speed for that weapon.
Some Spire and Abyss challenges are gated behind story progression. If a location seems inaccessiblereturn after advancing the main questline.
Life Challenges like "Animal Meat" and "Equipment" can be progressed naturally while exploring. Talk to vendors and gather resources as you encounter them.
