Sharpened Spear I is a Challenge in Crimson Desert. It is the entry tier of the Spear Mastery line and tasks the player with landing 15 spear counterattacks within 30 seconds. Clearing it rewards Gale I and turns the starting Sealed Abyss Artifact into a Faded Abyss Artifact.
Challenges in Crimson Desert are optional objectives picked up by finding Sealed Abyss Artifacts scattered through the world, exploring regions, or progressing through the main story. They award unique items, Mastery progression, and convert the artifact that started them into a Faded Abyss Artifact for later use.
"A spear wielded with nothing but one's own body must become a blade that pierces even fear itself."

How to Unlock Sharpened Spear I
To start this challenge, pick up the Sealed Abyss Artifact resting on top of a stone memorial at the crossroad southeast of Hunter's Cabin in Hernand. Independent guides describe the same spot as the road intersection southeast of Calphade Gate, which sits just past the cabin along the main road. The memorial is visible from the road, so riding along the intersection with the overworld map open is usually enough to spot it.
There is no prerequisite quest or story gate recorded on the Interactive Map, so any character who has reached Hernand and has a Spear equipped can attempt the challenge. Interacting with the artifact adds Sharpened Spear I to the player's active challenges and starts the 30 second timer the next time a counterattack is thrown.
Objective
Sharpened Spear I is a Mastery challenge: the player must hit the listed counter quota within the time limit while wielding the listed weapon.
Objective | Target | Time Limit | Weapon |
|---|---|---|---|
Land spear counterattacks | 15 counterattacks | 30 seconds |
A counterattack is a reactive move triggered by parrying an incoming enemy swing with a spear equipped. Each successful counter adds one toward the 15 required, and all 15 must land inside the 30 second window. The counter only fires when the Counter Stance skill has been unlocked from the Armed Combat branch of the skill tree.
Required Inputs
The counterattack uses a two button input pressed at the moment an enemy lands a swing. The input is the same across platforms, only the button labels differ.
Platform | Counterattack Input |
|---|---|
Xbox | RB + B |
PlayStation | R1 + Circle |
If the input fires without a valid incoming attack, the character performs a stance animation but no counter is counted. If Counter Stance has not been purchased, the button combination does nothing; unlock the skill before attempting the challenge or the timer will run out with zero progress.
Strategy
Fifteen counters in thirty seconds means one counter every two seconds on average, so the challenge is less about raw skill and more about positioning. The goal is to stand inside a knot of enemies that are all swinging at the player at once, which keeps attacks landing fast enough to fill the timer.
Bandit camps and hostile humanoid groups work best because their attacks arrive in tight, predictable rhythms and they crowd the player when given the chance. Large single Enemies (for example elite foes or small bosses) swing too slowly to stack counters fast enough. Pull a cluster of weaker foes, plant yourself in the middle of them, and keep the spear raised.
Do not try to reposition during the attempt. Every step away from the mob is a step away from the next counter. If the first pull thins out, let the rest close in before pressing the input again. If the timer expires, the challenge can be restarted immediately at the same Sealed Abyss Artifact.
It is also worth checking that a spear is actually equipped before triggering the artifact. Counters thrown with a different weapon class will not credit toward a spear challenge, even if the input animation plays.
Rewards

Gale I is the introductory tier of the Gale line of Mastery rewards, while the Faded Abyss Artifact can be used in the game's Abyss Gear and artifact systems. Check those pages for current slot and trade details.
Related Spear Mastery Challenges
Sharpened Spear I is the first entry in the five tier Sharpened Spear line of Mastery challenges. Later tiers raise the counter quota, swap in different spear techniques (for example the Spear Leap Attack objective used by Sharpened Spear IV), and move to different regions of the map.
For a broader list of spear focused objectives, see Spear Challenges. For general challenge mechanics and the full roster, see Challenges.
Notes and Tips
Only spear counterattacks count. Normal attacks, charged thrusts, and thrown projectiles will damage enemies but will not advance the counter.
Equip the Spear before picking up the Sealed Abyss Artifact so the challenge begins with the correct weapon class active. Swapping off the spear mid attempt will stop counters from registering.
As with other artifact challenges, interacting with the Sealed Abyss Artifact does not consume it. Completing Sharpened Spear I converts the Sealed Abyss Artifact into a Faded Abyss Artifact, which stays in the player's inventory.
