Trade Challenges
Complete guide to all 5 Trade Challenges in Crimson Desert, including Traveler with Oak Barrels, Rainbow Mane, Mysterious Accessory Shop, Contract of the Golden Crown, and Magnate of the Golden Desert. Covers prerequisites, wagon setup, packaging goods, and detailed walkthroughs.
Overview
Trade Challenges are a set of 5 challenges in Crimson Desert that belong to the Life category. These challenges revolve around the game's trading system: visiting inn owners across all regions, delivering trade goods to royal courts, and engaging with the merchant economy. Completing all 5 Trade Challenges unlocks the The Golden Merchant trophy and achievement.
Trade Challenges require you to travel extensively across Pywel. You will need to visit every major region and interact with specific NPCs. Some challenges are gated behind story progression, since certain towns only become accessible after specific chapters.
How Trade Challenges Work
Trading in Crimson Desert involves moving goods between regions for profit. Different towns produce and consume different items, so buying low in one area and selling high in another is the core loop. Trade Challenges test your knowledge of these routes and your willingness to explore every corner of the world map.

Inn owners serve as trade hubs in each region. They appear as "?" icons in the Environment section of the map after you unfog an area. Some inns are in dangerous territory, so liberating an area through the story may be necessary before you can safely visit them.
Prerequisites and Unlocking
Trade Challenges appear in your journal under the Missions tab, listed within the Life Challenges category. Each challenge is tied to a Sealed Abyss Artifact that you must physically pick up in the open world to activate the objective. The artifacts are small glowing objects placed near roads and intersections. Once you collect one, the associated challenge appears in your log.
Before you can meaningfully engage with most Trade Challenges, you need access to the trading system itself. Trading unlocks after defeating Kailok the Hornsplitter at the end of Chapter 2. After that point, the Goldleaf Guildhouse becomes available and you can start buying and selling trade goods.
Several challenges also require story progression to unlock specific regions. Demeniss and Delesyia become accessible through the main story, while Pailune requires completing the Chapter 7 liberation sequence. The Greymane quest chain gradually opens up trading infrastructure, so some challenges will remain out of reach until mid-game or later.
Wagon Setup for Trading
To haul packaged trade goods between trading posts, you need a wagon. There are two ways to get one: steal a wagon from the road (which can only be sold at the black market), or build your own through the Greymane Camp system.
Building a wagon requires two things. First, you must recruit Brice by completing the quest "A Rumor in Glenbright Farm", which is part of the Greymane "Grounds of the Sunrise" questline. Brice becomes the Wagon Manager at camp. Second, you need at least one Freesword with the Engineering skill in your roster. Arnold is the most common pick because his recruitment quest ("A Rumor in St. Halssius") becomes available early.
Building and Using the Wagon
Once both conditions are met, speak to Ross at camp and select Mission Dispatch. Look for the "Timberturner Wainwright" task in the dispatch list, assign your Engineer and any additional workers, then wait for them to finish. You can choose from different wagon types: the Trading Wagon, the Freight Wagon, and the Old Freight Trading Wagon. Larger wagons carry more cargo but need more workers, longer build times, and additional resources.
After the wagon is built, talk to Brice to retrieve it. You can load packaged trade goods from your inventory or camp supplies, then ride the wagon manually to a trading post to sell. Alternatively, you can send a comrade on an auto-trade dispatch run, though this removes your ability to defend the wagon against bandits along the route.
Packaging and Selling Trade Goods
Trade goods come in two forms: unpackaged and packaged. Unpackaged goods can be sold directly to Gremlin traders (the small green vendors found off the beaten path near settlements) for an immediate silver payout. This is quick but low-value.
For proper caravan trading, you need to convert goods into packaged form. Visit Carl, the Camp Provisioner at Greymane Camp, and select "Camp Provisions" from his menu. Packaging costs 100 Copper per item. Once packaged, the goods can no longer be sold to Gremlin traders; they are locked into the trading post system exclusively.
Selling at Trading Posts
Traders at the posts only buy in bulk. You need at least 25 units of a specific good to complete a sale. Check the trading post's available listings on the map before loading your wagon. Each post's prices fluctuate over time, so selling when the listed price sits above the market average nets the highest margins. The Goldleaf Trading Post near Unicorn Cliff and the Royal Trading Post in major capital cities are the main locations for legitimate sales.

You can acquire trade goods in several ways. The most reliable method is producing them through dispatch missions using Freeswords with rare or advanced production skills. You can also find trade goods through exploration, steal them (which generates a bounty), or buy them cheaply at one trading post to resell at another.

Detailed Walkthroughs
1. Traveler with Oak Barrels
The Sealed Abyss Artifact is at a road crossing in Pailune town. You can pick it up before Chapter 7 even though enemies may still be present in the area. The challenge requires meeting all 8 inn owners across every region.
Inn owners appear as "?" icons in the Environment map section after you explore and unfog their area. Some are in major cities like Hernand Castle and Delesyia, while others sit in smaller roadside inns between towns. One is in Pailune, which requires completing Chapter 7 (the liberation of Pailune) to visit safely.
Visit each inn, talk to the owner, and the challenge will track your progress. You do not need to buy or sell anything at the inn; just speaking with the owner counts. The reward is Solidarity III, which is a faction-related Abyss passive.
4. Contract of the Golden Crown
Pick up the artifact at the road intersection northeast of the Crimson Wall Shrine. This challenge asks you to deliver packed trade goods to all four royal courts: Hernandian, Demenissian, Varnian, and Delesyian.
You need to acquire packed trade goods first. These are special items meant specifically for royal court delivery, separate from regular trade commodities. Check merchants in each capital city for packed goods, or craft them if the option is available. Then deliver them to the Royal Court in each of the four major cities.
This challenge naturally requires visiting all four regions: Hernand, Demeniss, Varnia, and Delesyia. Make sure you have unlocked access to each region through the main story before attempting deliveries.
2. Rainbow Mane
Pick up the Sealed Abyss Artifact on the roadside south of Alabastar Bridge in Varnia. This challenge tasks you with learning dyeing techniques from seven different NPCs spread across Pywel: Theoric, Monty, Pororin, Castiel, Laurick, Alton, and Cromac.

Each of these NPCs operates a dye workshop, and you need to visit all seven to complete the challenge. Check the All Dyes List article for a full rundown of dye types and which NPC teaches each technique. Dye workshops tend to be found in or near towns, so explore thoroughly whenever you arrive at a new settlement. Some workshops may require story progression to access.
3. Mysterious Accessory Shop
The Sealed Abyss Artifact for this challenge sits at the intersection directly south of Demeniss Castle. Your objective is to visit all four Witches' workshops scattered across the world.
Witches' workshops are special NPC locations tied to the accessory crafting system. They are not always obvious on the map, so look for small icons or "?" markers in the Environment tab after you have explored an area. Each workshop sells unique accessories and crafting materials. You just need to speak with the Witch at each location to register your visit toward the challenge count.
5. Magnate of the Golden Desert
Collect the Sealed Abyss Artifact in Delesyia, on the side of the road immediately east of Western Outpost and west of Marni's Steel Armory. This challenge requires you to earn over 300,000 Camp Funds through trading.
This is the most time-consuming Trade Challenge. Camp Funds earned through trading accumulate across all transactions, not just a single run, so every sale at a trading post counts toward the total. The most efficient approach is to set up a production pipeline through dispatch missions, package the goods through Carl, and sell at posts where prices are above the market average.
Running longer trade routes to distant posts tends to yield higher profit per trip but also exposes your wagon to more bandit encounters along the road. Consider investing in a larger wagon type to carry more goods per trip, which makes each journey more profitable even after factoring in travel time and risk. If you have been trading regularly throughout the game, you may already be close to the 300,000 threshold by the time you reach Delesyia.
Inn Owner Locations
Region | Inn Location | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Hernand Castle Inn and surrounding area inns | Available from early game | |
Demeniss region inns | Accessible after reaching Demeniss in the story | |
Pailune town inn | Requires Chapter 7 liberation | |
Delesyia city inns | Accessible after reaching Delesyia |
Tips
Start visiting inns as soon as you arrive in a new region. This tracks progress toward Traveler with Oak Barrels passively.
Unfog map areas to reveal inn owner locations as "?" icons in the Environment section.
Some Trade Challenges are gated behind story progression. Do not worry if you cannot access all inns or workshops immediately.
Trade Challenges reward Solidarity, Service, Life Transference, and Efficiency Abyss passives, which help with faction and NPC relationships, trade efficiency, and camp management.
The Golden Merchant trophy only requires 5 challenges, making this the smallest challenge sub-category.
For Magnate of the Golden Desert (300,000 Camp Funds), start trading early and often. Every sale contributes to the cumulative total, so do not wait until you pick up the artifact to begin.
Build the largest wagon you can afford. The extra cargo capacity more than compensates for the longer build time and resource cost.
Check trading post prices on the map before setting out. Prices fluctuate over time, so selling during a price spike can significantly increase your margins.
You can send a comrade to deliver goods via auto-trade dispatch, but manual delivery lets you defend the wagon against bandits and keep the cargo intact.
Combine Trade Challenge progress with other Life Challenges while traveling. Visiting inns and dye workshops along your trade route saves time.
