Overview
Arm Wrestling is one of several minigames available in Crimson Desert. It is a Test of Strength activity where Kliff sits down across from an opponent and attempts to force their arm down through a combination of rapid button presses and timed quick-time events (QTEs). The minigame is first encountered during the Where Rumors Gather main quest in the Trials of Kindness arc, where it is required for story progression. The quest cannot continue until Kliff defeats the first opponent.

After completing the quest, players can return to replay arm wrestling matches at any time for money rewards and to pursue the Hero's Handshake challenge series. Arm wrestling is one of the more accessible minigames in Crimson Desert because it relies on raw input speed and pattern recognition rather than game knowledge or deck building. Nailing the quick-time events is what actually wins the match; frantic button mashing alone will not get you through the later rounds. Patch 1.00.03 (March 23, 2026) lowered the overall QTE difficulty for Arm Wrestling, making the timing windows more forgiving across all rounds.
Location
Arm Wrestling is first encountered at the inn in the City of Hernand, commonly referred to as Hernand Inn. The activity becomes available during Chapter 2 of the main story when Kliff visits Hernand as part of the Where Rumors Gather quest. To start a match, walk up to the arm wrestler sitting at the table near the entrance of the inn. Aim at him with L1/LB (controller) or right-click (mouse), then press the challenge button: X/A on controller or R on keyboard.

The first match during the Where Rumors Gather quest is free. After completing the quest, replaying arm wrestling costs 20 Alms per session. Each session consists of multiple rounds with increasingly difficult opponents. After finishing the story quest, arm wrestling tables also appear in taverns across other parts of Pywel, featuring progressively tougher opponents with higher payouts as you explore more of the world.
Inside the bar area, a group of men sit around tables arm wrestling for sport. To enter the tournament, speak to the Host NPC standing near the arm wrestling tables. The Host handles match entry, collects the participation fee, and pairs you against your next opponent. Each participant wagers the same amount of money, so winning a bout effectively doubles your stake.

How It Works
An arm wrestling match plays out in alternating phases. During each round, players switch between a button-mashing phase and a timing phase until the on-screen meter is filled completely in their favor. The screen displays a horizontal gauge with a red side (Kliff) and a white side (the opponent). Pushing the gauge entirely into the red zone wins the round, while letting it fill completely white results in a loss.
A typical round involves roughly three cycles of mashing followed by a QTE prompt. While the mashing provides steady pressure, a successful QTE hit pushes the red bar a large chunk in your favor, far more than any amount of rapid mashing. This means timing precision matters more than raw speed, especially against the harder opponents.
Phase 1: Button Mashing
When the round begins, the screen displays the horizontal gauge. The goal is to push the gauge into the red zone by pressing the action button as quickly as possible. The faster you mash, the more the bar shifts toward your side. This phase accounts for most of the sustained pressure in each round, so maintaining a consistent pace is critical.

Xbox | X |
Keyboard | E |
Phase 2: Quick-Time Event (QTE)
After several seconds of mashing, a circular dial appears on screen with a rotating needle (spinner) and a white (grey) wedge. You must stop mashing and wait for the needle to enter the white zone, then press the confirm button at exactly the right moment. A successful hit fills a large chunk of the red meter and gives Kliff a significant advantage. Missing the timing lets your opponent recover ground. These QTE hits can make or break an arm wrestling match, so they deserve more focus than the mashing phase.

PlayStation | X |
Xbox | A |
Keyboard | R |

The white wedge always appears on the left side of the circle, and the needle always rotates clockwise. This is consistent across every round and every opponent. Knowing this allows you to anticipate the timing window rather than reacting to it. Most experienced players recommend pressing the confirm button roughly a split second before the needle visually enters the white zone, because anticipation is more reliable than pure reaction time.
The mashing and QTE phases alternate multiple times throughout a single round (typically around three QTE phases per round) until the gauge is fully red (win) or fully white (loss).

Match Progression
A full arm wrestling session consists of four consecutive rounds with progressively harder opponents. Each round requires faster mashing and tighter QTE timing than the last. The fourth and final opponent is the champion. Beating all four in a row without losing is required for the Hero's Handshake challenge.
Round | Opponent | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
1 | Guard | Easy |
2 | Guard | Medium |
3 | Guard | Hard |
4 | Champion | Very Hard |
Losing any round ends the session. You can start over by paying the 20 Alms entry fee again (or for free during the initial quest). The difficulty increase between rounds is noticeable: the opponent's mashing resistance rises, the QTE needle spins faster, and the white wedge timing window gets narrower with each successive round. However, Patch 1.00.03 reduced the overall QTE difficulty, so the timing windows are now more generous than they were at launch. Players who struggled with the champion round before the patch may find it more manageable after updating.
Rewards
Winning arm wrestling matches earns money rewards. The initial quest completion during Where Rumors Gather awards 20 Alms. Subsequent victories in replayed sessions pay out Copper and Silver Coins, with higher payouts for defeating later-round opponents and the champion. Arm wrestling competitions cost a small amount of money to enter, but you stand to make a profit in return, especially when winning multiple consecutive bouts.
The arm wrestling economy works on a wagering system. Each participant puts up the same amount of money before a bout, and the winner takes the full pot. This effectively doubles your entry fee on every win. Because sessions involve four consecutive rounds with increasing stakes, a full sweep from the first opponent through the champion can yield a substantial payout relative to the initial entry cost. Losing at any point forfeits your current wager for that round.

Hero's Handshake Challenge
Arm Wrestling is tied to the Hero's Handshake challenge series, which falls under the Test of Strength category within the Challenges system. Completing all Test of Strength challenges (along with other minigame sub-categories) contributes toward the True Gamer trophy and achievement.
Challenge | Requirement | Reward |
|---|---|---|
Win 3 consecutive arm wrestling matches, then defeat the champion |
The Hero's Handshake I challenge unlocks when you first interact with the arm wrestling table at Hernand Inn. Completing it awards a Sealed Abyss Artifact, which can be used to unlock new skills or upgrade existing ones on the Abyss Skill Tree. This is one of the better early rewards tied to a minigame, since Sealed Abyss Artifacts are a valuable resource for character progression that most players encounter only through exploration or boss fights. Minigame challenges unlock upon first interaction with a minigame location rather than through finding artifacts in the open world.
Beyond the initial challenge at Hernand, additional Hero's Handshake II through IV challenges become available at taverns in later regions as you progress through the main story. These higher-tier challenges feature tougher opponents with faster QTE spinners and narrower timing windows, but they also offer increasingly valuable rewards. Completing all four tiers of Hero's Handshake, along with the other Test of Strength sub-challenges, contributes toward the True Gamer trophy and achievement.
Input Preference: Controller vs Keyboard
Arm wrestling performance can vary depending on your input device. Both controller and keyboard are fully viable, but each has trade-offs that are worth understanding before you start a session.
Controller advantages: The face buttons on a gamepad (Square on PlayStation, X on Xbox) have short travel distance and respond well to the thumb-rolling technique. Many players find that controllers provide a smoother, more consistent mashing rhythm with less hand fatigue over four consecutive rounds. Switching between the mash button and the QTE confirm button (X on PlayStation, A on Xbox) is seamless since both buttons sit on the same face pad under your thumb.
Keyboard advantages: Keyboard players benefit from dedicating one hand entirely to mashing the E key and the other hand to pressing R for QTE phases. This two-handed split means you never have to interrupt your mashing rhythm to hit a different key. Some keyboard users also achieve faster raw input speeds by alternating between two fingers on the E key, though this technique requires practice to maintain consistency.

Ultimately, the QTE timing phases matter far more than mashing speed for winning matches. Whichever input device you choose, focus on nailing every QTE prompt. A player with average mashing speed but perfect QTE execution will consistently outperform someone who mashes faster but fumbles the timing windows.
Tips and Strategies
Use two hands on PC. The most effective keyboard technique is to use one hand for mashing the E key and the other hand for pressing R during QTE phases. This way you never have to stop mashing to reach a different key, and each hand can focus on its own task. Alternate between two fingers when mashing E to produce faster input and reduce fatigue.
Roll your thumb on controller. Rather than tapping the button stiffly with your thumb tip, roll your thumb across the face button in a circular motion. This technique generates faster presses with less fatigue, which matters in the later rounds where sustained speed is essential.
Tilt the controller for comfort. Holding the controller at a 90-degree angle can give a more natural grip for rapid mashing. This position also makes it easier to quickly reach the confirm button (A/X) when the QTE prompt appears, since your fingers are already positioned closer to the face buttons.
Anticipate the QTE, do not react to it. The white wedge always sits on the left side of the circular dial, and the needle always rotates clockwise. Once you learn the needle's speed, you can start pressing roughly a split second before it reaches the zone rather than waiting until you see it there. Anticipation beats reaction time every round, and experienced players report that pressing slightly early yields the most consistent results.
Take advantage of the Patch 1.00.03 difficulty reduction. Patch 1.00.03 reduced the QTE difficulty for Arm Wrestling across all rounds. If you still find the spinner too fast, switching to Performance mode in graphics settings can slow down the needle's visual speed on the dial, giving you a wider effective timing window. Some players on PS5 have reported that Quality and Balanced modes can make the target zone nearly invisible due to the spinner speed, so Performance mode is recommended as an additional aid.
Do not panic near the finish line. When the gauge is almost full, it can be tempting to mash frantically. Stay consistent with your rhythm instead. Overexertion in the final stretch often leads to missed QTE prompts, which lets the opponent claw back progress.
Watch for opponent resistance drops. During the mashing phase, there are brief moments where the opponent's resistance weakens and the bar moves faster. Increase your press speed during these windows to maximize progress before the next QTE phase begins.
Manage your stamina across rounds. The session involves four consecutive matches with no break. If you burn out your fingers on the first two rounds, you will struggle against the harder opponents. Find a sustainable mashing rhythm for the early rounds and save your peak speed for the champion.
Prioritize QTE accuracy over mashing speed. Successful QTE hits move the meter far more than any amount of rapid mashing. If you can only focus on one thing, focus on nailing every QTE phase. A player with average mashing speed but perfect QTE timing will beat a player with fast mashing but poor timing every time.
Adjust display settings if the QTE zone is hard to see. Players on OLED displays with HDR enabled have reported that the white target wedge on the circular dial can be nearly invisible due to how bright highlights are rendered. If you are struggling to see the QTE timing zone, try disabling HDR temporarily in your display settings or adjusting your in-game brightness. This issue is separate from the Performance Mode fix and specifically affects visual clarity of the target wedge rather than spinner speed.
Remap mashing to the mouse scroll wheel (PC). A popular community workaround for PC players is to rebind the mash input to mouse wheel up or down through the game's key binding options or an external rebinding tool. Scrolling the mouse wheel rapidly generates fast input with minimal hand fatigue, which can be especially helpful for players who find sustained keyboard mashing physically uncomfortable or painful over four consecutive rounds.
Accessibility note for sustained mashing. The arm wrestling minigame requires rapid, sustained button presses that can be physically demanding over multiple rounds. Players with hand or wrist conditions may find the mashing phases difficult. Using the mouse wheel remapping trick, taking breaks between sessions, and focusing on strong QTE timing to compensate for slower mashing speed are all workable approaches. The Patch 1.00.03 QTE difficulty reduction also helps by making the timing phases more forgiving, which reduces the total number of mashing cycles needed to win each round.
Focus on timing your QTE presses more than button mashing. A well-timed R press gives far more gauge progress than several seconds of mashing.
Use separate hands for each input: one hand spams E while the other times R. This prevents your mashing from interfering with your timing.
Controller tip: Tilt the controller at a 90-degree angle for a more comfortable grip when mashing. Some players find this reduces hand fatigue.
Performance tip: If you are struggling with the QTE timing, try switching your graphics preset from Quality to Performance in the options menu. Lower frame latency can make the spinner easier to read.
Press the QTE button roughly one second before the arrow reaches the white zone. The animation has a slight input delay that rewards anticipation over pure reaction.
Quest Context
Arm Wrestling is introduced as part of the Where Rumors Gather main quest during Chapter 2 of the story. After being rescued from the river by a merchant, Kliff arrives in the City of Hernand and heads to the inn. A guardsman in a metal helm is seated at a table near the entrance, and Kliff must challenge him to an arm wrestling match to progress the quest. The story cannot advance until Kliff wins this first match. Winning this initial match completes the arm wrestling portion of the quest and allows progression to the next objective, the Mysterious Man quest.
This introductory match is a tutorial for the arm wrestling mechanics. It is the easiest opponent in the lineup, so players can learn the button mashing and QTE timing without much pressure before attempting the harder follow-up rounds for the Hero's Handshake challenge. The quest match does not cost any Alms, unlike subsequent replays.
