Overview
Grounds of the Sunrise Quests is the complete walkthrough for the Grounds of the Sunrise faction quest chain in Crimson Desert. This chain belongs to the Greymanes faction and revolves around reuniting scattered Greymane survivors across the continent of Pywel. Each quest sends Kliff to investigate rumors about former comrades who went into hiding, fell into trouble, or took up new lives after the mercenary band was shattered. Once found, these survivors return to the Greymane Camp at Howling Hills and unlock new facilities, dispatch missions, and camp upgrades.
With 38 quests in total, Grounds of the Sunrise is the single largest Faction Quest chain in the game. The questline spans all five regions of Pywel and continues from the end of Chapter 3 through the endgame. It runs parallel to the Scattered Embers chain, which covers camp life, morale, and community building. Progress in Grounds of the Sunrise often triggers new Scattered Embers content as newly recruited Greymanes settle into their roles at camp.

How to Unlock
The Grounds of the Sunrise chain becomes available after completing the Greymanes Reunited main quest, which concludes Chapter 3 of the story. At that point, Marius begins receiving intelligence about scattered Greymane survivors in the surrounding regions. Speak with Marius at the Greymane Camp in Howling Hills to begin the first quest, Embers of Return.
To access the faction quest journal, open the map and switch the icon filter to "Factions." Locate the camp icon next to the Greymane emblem, then press the inspect button (Triangle on PlayStation, Y on Xbox) to open the faction menu. Navigate to the "Mission List" tab to see all available Grounds of the Sunrise quests.
New quests in the chain appear progressively as you advance the main story and recruit more comrades. Major chapter transitions in particular tend to trigger fresh rumors. Return to camp and speak with Marius regularly after story milestones to pick up the latest leads.

Quest Walkthroughs
Embers of Return
Embers of Return is the first and most important quest in the chain. Marius has received news that Greymane survivors have been spotted in the region, and he needs Kliff to spread the word that the Greymanes are rebuilding. This quest has multiple stages and introduces the Mission Dispatch system.
Prerequisite: Complete Greymanes Reunited (Chapter 3 finale).
Step-by-Step Walkthrough:
Rumors of the Greymanes: Travel to the Howling Hills camp and speak with Marius. He will share intelligence about a group of Greymane survivors spotted nearby. You earn your first chunk of Greymane Contribution (+140) after this conversation.
A Rumor at Hills of No Return: Head to the Hills of No Return, located north of the Abyss Nexus. You will find Yann and Otto here along with several other former Greymanes. Speak with them to confirm their identity and deliver the message that the band is reassembling.
New Information: Return to the Howling Hills camp and report back to Marius. He has gathered fresh intelligence about additional survivors while you were away. Note that you must also complete the second objective of The Greymanes' New Fangs (a Scattered Embers quest) before this step becomes available.
A Rumor at Glenbright Farm: Travel southwest to Glenbright Farm, which is located southwest of the Goldleaf Guildhouse. Inside the barn you will find Ronnie, Brice, and Tranan. They are delighted to hear that the Greymanes have reunited and immediately agree to return to camp. Report the good news to Marius back at Howling Hills. Marius will then reveal the locations of even more Greymane survivors.
Secure Resources: This step introduces the Mission Dispatch system. Open your map and use the faction interface to dispatch Freeswords to Timberham Sawmill (for timber) and Karin Quarry (for stone). Each dispatch mission takes approximately 16 to 17 in-game hours to complete. You can rest at the campfire, explore the world, or work on other quests while the missions run.
Luke's Request: Luke, one of the returned Greymanes, asks you to place a flower basket in an old house. Complete this task and report back to Luke. This earns +50 Trust with Luke.
Expanding the Camp: With enough resources and recruits gathered, initiate the first Howling Hills camp expansion. Open the map, switch to the Factions filter, locate the camp icon, inspect the area, navigate to the Mission List tab, and select "Expand the Camp at Howling Hill." Assign at least two comrades to the expansion mission and send them out. The expansion completes after 17 in-game hours and rewards 500 EXP.
Rewards:
Beer x5, Wine x2, Lean Meat x6
Medium Bag x1
+280 Greymane Contribution (total across all steps)
+50 Trust of Luke
Mission Dispatch system unlocked
First camp expansion completed
A Rumor in Ivynook
After completing the fourth objective of Embers of Return (the Glenbright Farm stage), Marius receives word that Greymane survivors have been spotted tending to troublesome vines near the town of Ivynook.
Prerequisite: Complete the 4th objective of Embers of Return.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough:
Look into the rumor: Head northwest from the City of Hernand toward Haunted Hill Road. Along the way you will encounter a stranger who was rescued by Greymanes in the area. He confirms that the survivors are living in Ivynook.
Find Greymanes in Ivynook: Continue to Ivynook and locate Evelyn, Devan, and Pierce. They are in the middle of a conversation when you arrive. Speak with them to complete the quest. All three agree to return to the Greymane Camp.
Rewards:
Feather x4
Copper Ore x3
+210 Greymane Contribution
A Rumor at Hook Rapids
Marius passes along a new lead about Greymane survivors spotted near Hook Rapids. This quest becomes available after further main story progression and completing earlier recruitment missions.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough:
Investigate the rumor: Travel to Hook Rapids and search for any signs of former Greymane members in the area.
Return to Marius: After locating the survivors and recruiting them, return to the Greymane Camp and report your findings to Marius.
Rewards:
350 Armor Camp Supplies
Arrows x40
A Rumor at Goldleaf Trading Post
A lead surfaces about Greymane survivors working at the Goldleaf Trading Post. This is one of the most important quests in the chain because it recruits Ben and Kamu, who collectively unlock the Farm, Ranch, Cook, and Quartermaster facilities at camp.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough:
Look into the rumor: Travel to the Goldleaf Trading Post and search for former Greymane survivors. You will encounter six people in total who confirm their connection to the band.
Return to Marius: Report back to Marius at the Greymane Camp. The six recruits join the camp, but rather than becoming workers, they fill specialized roles: new shops, the ranch, and the farm.
Rewards:
Engraved Silver Earring x1
Unlocks Ben (Ranch) and Kamu (Farm) as camp residents
After recruiting Ben and Kamu, you gain access to the "Field of Abundance" quest from Ben (ranch unlock) and the "Land of Dreams" quest from Kamu (farm unlock). Both involve completing tutorial tasks at Bloomwood Ranch and Glenbright Farm, then dispatching a construction mission to Howling Hill.
A Rumor in St. Halssius
Marius has heard about suspicious individuals in St. Halssius who might be former Greymanes in disguise. This quest recruits Arnold, an engineer whose skills are required for advanced dispatch missions and the wagon construction process.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough:
Check the suspicious individuals: Travel to St. Halssius and investigate the lead. Locate the suspected Greymane members and confirm their identity.
Recruit Arnold: Arnold is the primary recruit from this quest. He comes with the Engineering skill already active, which is required for missions at the Timberturner Wainwright and Emberwind Workshop.
Rewards:
800 Grain Supplies
Palmar Pill x1
Arnold recruited (Engineer skill)
A Rumor in Southern Quarry
Word reaches camp about Greymane survivors working at the Southern Quarry. Like other rumor quests, this involves traveling to the location, finding the former comrades, and bringing them home.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough:
Investigate the rumor: Head to the Southern Quarry and search for Greymane survivors among the workers there.
Recruit and return: Once located, speak with the survivors and convince them to rejoin the band. Return to Marius at camp.
Rewards:
Holy Water x2
A Rumor in Pollengarth Apiary
A rumor surfaces that Greymane survivors have taken up work at the Pollengarth Apiary, a beekeeping operation in the countryside.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough:
Investigate the rumor: Travel to the Pollengarth Apiary and locate the former Greymane members.
Recruit and return: Convince the survivors to come back to the Greymane Camp and report to Marius.
Rewards:
600 Grain Supplies
Honey Tea x10
A Rumor in Calphade
Marius receives an urgent report that Greymane survivors in Calphade are in danger and need to be rescued. This quest recruits Terry and Falstaff, who bring specialized skills to the camp.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough:
Rescue those in danger: Travel to Calphade and locate the Greymane survivors. Unlike the simpler investigation quests, this one requires you to physically rescue the comrades from a threatening situation. Be prepared for combat.
Recruit Terry and Falstaff: After resolving the situation, Terry and Falstaff agree to return to the Greymane Camp. Report back to Marius.
Rewards:
500 Armor Supplies
Light Silver Pouch x1
Terry and Falstaff recruited
Reuniting with Comrades
Reuniting with Comrades is a mid-chain quest that sends Kliff to track down scattered Greymane survivors at various remote locations. It serves as a consolidation point in the questline, wrapping up several smaller leads into a single recruitment push.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough:
Follow the leads: Marius provides information about multiple Greymane survivors scattered across the region. Travel to each marked location and speak with the former comrades.
Convince them to return: Each survivor has their own reason for staying away. Resolve their concerns through dialogue or by completing a small task.
Report to Marius: After recruiting all the survivors in this batch, return to the Greymane Camp and update Marius.
Rewards:
Feathers x4
Copper Ore x3
This quest is one of the most efficient in the chain for rewards relative to the time invested. The Abyss Artifact alone makes it worth prioritizing.
For a Better Tomorrow
For a Better Tomorrow is the culminating mission of the Grounds of the Sunrise questline. It represents the final push to secure the Greymanes' future by establishing a permanent, self-sustaining settlement. The exact objectives and rewards for this quest are still being documented by the community.
Based on the pattern of the questline, this quest likely involves completing the last round of camp expansions and ensuring that all critical facilities are operational. Check back as additional details are confirmed.
Camp Expansion and Facility Unlocks
The primary gameplay payoff of the Grounds of the Sunrise chain is the Greymane Camp expansion system. Each recruited survivor brings a specialized skill that either unlocks a new facility or upgrades an existing one. The table below maps quest completions to the facilities they enable.
Facility | Unlocked By | Function |
|---|---|---|
Mission Dispatches | Completing Embers of Return | Assign Freeswords to resource-gathering expeditions at locations like Timberham Sawmill and Karin Quarry. Managed through Ross. Missions run on in-game time and restart automatically. |
Cook | A Rumor at Glenbright Farm (via Embers of Return) | Prepare dishes at the cooking pot. The cook sells prepared meals with limited daily stock and unlocks recipes for repeated use. |
Quartermaster | A Rumor at Glenbright Farm (via Embers of Return) | Purchase provisions and manage camp supply inventory through the quartermaster NPC. |
Trading Post (Wagon) | Recruit Brice via Glenbright Farm, then complete Timberturner Wainwright missions | Convert provisions into packaged trade goods. Monitor trading center prices across regions to maximize profit. See Skiffs and Wagons. |
Farm | Recruit Kamu via A Rumor at Goldleaf Trading Post | Plant and harvest crops. Tutorial involves apple-picking at Glenbright Farm and dispatching a farm construction mission to Howling Hill. |
Ranch | Recruit Ben via A Rumor at Goldleaf Trading Post | Raise livestock, capture wild goats, and slaughter animals for meat. Tutorial involves milking at Bloomwood Ranch. |
Blacksmith (Tranan) | Recruit Tranan through Embers of Return (Glenbright Farm) | Buy and sell gear, ammunition, and refinement items. Limited stock that refreshes periodically. |
Emberwind Workshop | Recruit an Engineer (Arnold via A Rumor in St. Halssius) | Construct Cloudcarts and other advanced transport devices. |
Kilnden Workshop | Camp expansion progression | Produce Kuku Pots and other crafting outputs. |
Blockade Deployment | Recruit enough Freeswords | Deploy Freeswords to blockaded regions to reduce enemy numbers in contested areas. |
Camp Expansion Requirements
Each camp expansion at Howling Hills requires a minimum number of recruited comrades and specific resource thresholds. You donate resources through Carl, the Provisions Keeper, at the camp's central area. The six donation categories are:
Category | Icon | Accepted Items |
|---|---|---|
Comrades | Helmet | Recruited Greymane members (Luke, Ronald, and others) |
Armor and Weapons | Tent + Armor | Gear, upgrade materials, cloth, bones |
Ore and Stone | Tent + Rock | Ore, stone, Azurite, and similar minerals |
Timber | Tent + Logs | Wood and timber resources |
Provisions | Tent + Bags | Food, animals, herbs, and other consumables |
Money | Tent + Coin | Silver, valuables like rings and necklaces |
The first Howling Hill camp expansion requires 2 recruits, 100 food, and 250 silver. Later expansions require progressively more resources and comrades. Donated items are permanently removed from your personal inventory, so plan donations carefully.
Mission Dispatch System
The Mission Dispatch system is unlocked after completing Embers of Return. Ross manages dispatch assignments at the Greymane Camp. The system runs passively on in-game time, generating resources while you explore, fight, or pursue other quests.
How dispatch missions work:
Open the Factions tab on the map to see available dispatch locations (Timberham Sawmill, Karin Quarry, Warspike Spearmaker, Gorthak Ironworks, Thornbriar Food Storage, and others).
Assign comrades to each mission. Each comrade has unique skills (Escort, Farmer, Rancher, Fisherman, Smith, Logger, Miner) that boost mission efficiency.
Some missions require mandatory skills (Craftsman, Jeweler, Engineer, Cook, Explorer, Painter, Weaver, Builder). Without a comrade who has the required skill, the mission cannot be started.
Missions take a set number of in-game hours to complete. Rest at the campfire or continue adventuring to pass the time.
Completed missions deposit rewards in the Supply Chest behind Carl. Missions automatically restart unless manually canceled.
Assigning multiple workers to the same mission unlocks a "Comrade" buff that increases the total reward output.

Additional Camp Quests
Several quests within the Grounds of the Sunrise chain are not standard recruitment missions but instead involve camp infrastructure tasks. These include resource dispatches, facility construction, and donation objectives.
Secure Resources
The Secure Resources objectives appear at multiple points throughout the questline. Each instance requires you to dispatch Freeswords to a specific resource-gathering location.
Phase | Dispatch Targets | Resources Gathered |
|---|---|---|
Part 1 (Embers of Return) | Timberham Sawmill, Karin Quarry | Timber, Stone |
Part 2 (Later chain) | Warspike Spearmaker | Weapons and equipment |
Expanding the Camp
Camp expansion quests trigger at key progression thresholds when you have recruited enough comrades and donated sufficient resources. To start an expansion:
Open the map and switch the icon filter to "Factions."
Locate the camp icon next to the Greymane emblem.
Press the inspect button (Triangle / Y) to open the faction menu.
Navigate to the "Mission List" tab.
Select "Expand the Camp at Howling Hill."
Assign at least two comrades to the expansion and send them out.
Wait approximately 17 in-game hours for the expansion to complete.
If you see a "Function not available" message, close the map and reopen it. The menu sometimes requires multiple attempts to load properly.
Land of Dreams and Field of Abundance
These two quests become available after recruiting Ben and Kamu through the A Rumor at Goldleaf Trading Post quest. They serve as tutorial introductions to the Farm and Ranch systems.
Land of Dreams (Kamu's Request): Kamu guides you through building the farm. Complete the apple-picking tutorial at Glenbright Farm, dispatch a farm construction mission to Howling Hill, then plant apple seeds, harvest them, and deliver the produce to Kamu. Rewards a Medium Bag.
Field of Abundance (Ben's Request): Ben teaches you how to run the ranch. Complete the milk harvest tutorial at Bloomwood Ranch, dispatch a ranch construction mission to Howling Hill, then capture a wild goat and slaughter livestock for meat. Rewards a Medium Bag.
Rewards Summary
Grounds of the Sunrise quests reward a combination of progression items, consumables, and camp infrastructure upgrades. Here is a breakdown of the confirmed reward categories across the chain.

Recommended Progression Order
While most Grounds of the Sunrise quests can be completed in any order once they appear, the following sequence maximizes early access to the most useful camp facilities:
Embers of Return: Always complete this first. It unlocks the Mission Dispatch system, which generates passive resources for the rest of the game.
A Rumor at Glenbright Farm: Part of Embers of Return's sub-objectives. Recruiting Brice, Ronnie, and Tranan unlocks the Cook, Quartermaster, and Blacksmith at camp.
A Rumor at Goldleaf Trading Post: Recruits Ben and Kamu, unlocking the Ranch and Farm. These are essential for self-sustaining food production.
A Rumor in St. Halssius: Recruits Arnold the Engineer, whose skill is mandatory for constructing the wagon at the Timberturner Wainwright.
A Rumor in Ivynook: Provides a quick Abyss Artifact and adds three residents to the camp.
Reuniting with Comrades: Efficient reward-to-time ratio with another Abyss Artifact plus crafting materials.
Remaining rumor quests: Complete the rest of the chain (Calphade, Southern Quarry, Pollengarth Apiary, Hook Rapids, and others) as they become available.
For a Better Tomorrow: Tackle the finale once all other quests are done.
Relationship to Other Quest Chains
Grounds of the Sunrise does not exist in isolation. It connects to several other systems and quest chains in Crimson Desert:
Scattered Embers: The companion Greymane faction chain. Recruiting Greymanes through Grounds of the Sunrise often triggers new Scattered Embers quests where those characters settle into camp life. The two chains should be alternated for the best progression flow.
Greymane Commissions: Requests from Greymanes already living at camp. These become available as more members are recruited and typically involve gathering specific materials or resolving local problems.
The Greymanes' New Fangs: A Scattered Embers quest that must be partially completed before you can progress past step 3 of Embers of Return. Andrew and Naira argue about adopting a stray dog, and you must purchase Lean Meat and earn the dog's trust.
Main Story: New Grounds of the Sunrise quests appear after major chapter transitions. The chain starts at the end of Chapter 3 and continues through the endgame.
Tips and Strategies
Always have active Mission Dispatches running. After completing Embers of Return, deploy Freeswords on missions whenever you leave camp. This is the best passive resource accumulation method in the game. Rewards appear in the Supply Chest behind Carl.
Prioritize the Goldleaf Trading Post rumor. Recruiting Ben and Kamu early unlocks the Farm and Ranch, which provide a steady food supply and reduce reliance on foraging.
Bring an Engineer for wagon construction. The Timberturner Wainwright missions require a Freesword with the Engineering skill. Arnold from St. Halssius is the earliest source of this skill. Without him, you cannot build a trading wagon.
Check rumors after every chapter transition. New recruitment leads tend to surface when you return to camp after major story events. Speak with Marius immediately after arriving.
Pair recruitment with Scattered Embers. If you want more camp life content from Scattered Embers, focus on recruitment quests here first. Every new Greymane you bring back is a potential quest giver for that chain.
Rest at the campfire to pass dispatch time. Dispatch missions and camp expansions run on in-game time. Resting at the campfire advances the clock quickly so you do not have to wait in real time.
Do not ignore the Supply Chest. Completed dispatch mission rewards pile up in the Supply Chest behind Carl. Check it every time you return to camp to collect accumulated resources.
Donate strategically. Camp expansions require specific resource thresholds. Before dumping everything, check which categories are low by speaking to Carl and reviewing the camp provision icons at the top right of the screen.
Be prepared for combat in later rumor quests. While early quests like Ivynook are simple conversations, later quests (especially Calphade) require rescuing survivors from hostile situations. Bring healing items and upgrade your gear before attempting them.
Faction quests are not missable. Side quests in Crimson Desert can be returned to even across chapters. If you skip a quest, you can always come back to it later without penalty.
