Overview
Ross is the personnel manager of the Greymanes, the mercenary band led by Kliff in Crimson Desert. A seasoned member of the group, Ross is known for his ability to bring down a heavily armored foe with nothing but a dagger. As the personnel manager, he is responsible for coordinating the roles and assignments of Greymane members.
Ross is one of the first Greymanes to rejoin the band after its reformation. He and Carl arrive at camp on their own before the rest of the company is reassembled, which speaks to their loyalty and long history with the group. While Carl takes charge of provisions and the supply chest, Ross steps into the role of dispatch coordinator, organizing mission assignments for the growing roster of freesword recruits.
His defining trait is an exceptional memory for people's names and faces. That talent, combined with his years of frontline experience, made him a natural fit for a combat-support position rather than continued service on the front lines.
First Encounter
Players first meet Ross during the Unfamiliar Lands quest near the beginning of the game. After speaking with Marius at the Hills of No Return, the player follows a minimap marker and finds Ross perched against a tree near a cabin by the graves. This brief reunion establishes Ross as a trusted comrade who has already made his way back to the Greymanes on his own.
Location
Ross can be found at the following locations over the course of the game:
Location | Region | Context |
|---|---|---|
First encounter during the Unfamiliar Lands quest; standing near a tree by a cabin | ||
Permanent station from Chapter 3 onward; marked with a helmet icon on the minimap |
Once Ross settles at Greymane Camp, he stays there permanently. His position is marked by a helmet icon on the camp minimap, so players can locate him quickly when returning to base.
Camp Role and the Dispatch System
Ross operates the Freesword Management Office at Greymane Camp. Players speak with Ross to view available dispatch missions, select a team of freesword companions, and pay the required resource cost to begin each mission. His role is central to the camp's dispatch system, which allows players to send workers on gathering, crafting, and combat assignments that run in the background while the player explores the world.
The dispatch system unlocks during Chapter 3: Howling Hill as part of the Pioneering questline, after completing the Rumors From the Sawmill quest and reading a letter from Shakatu at the camp shrine. At that point, the player's first two freesword comrades (Luke and Ronald) become available, and Ross sets up his station.
How Dispatch Works
When interacting with Ross, the dispatch missions board opens. Missions are grouped by category, and each listing shows the recommended party size, required skills, estimated success chance, and reward preview.
Mission Category | Typical Rewards |
|---|---|
Food Missions | Meat, grain, provisions |
Trade Missions | Silk, dyes, specialty trade goods |
Base Resource Missions | Stone, lumber, ores |
Construction / Expansion | Facility upgrades, camp expansions |
Dispatch missions run on in-game time rather than real-world time. Sleeping at camp, completing quests, or simply traveling the world all advance the mission clock. For that reason, it is best to keep every available freesword on active dispatch at all times.
Players can also manage dispatch remotely by opening the world map, hovering over the Greymane Camp icon, and navigating to the Missions tab. This allows mission reassignment without traveling back to speak with Ross in person.
Ross's Request
At the start of Chapter 4, Ross issues a Greymane Commission called "Ross's Request." He has heard rumors that bandits frequently raid the Halssius Apothecary and asks Kliff to investigate the situation and offer aid on behalf of the Greymanes.
Detail | Information |
|---|---|
Quest Type | Greymane Commission (Tales of the Greymanes) |
Quest Giver | Ross, at Howling Hill |
Chapter | Chapter 4 |
Objective | Investigate bandit activity at the Halssius Apothecary |
Reward | Inventory Expansion +3 |
Trust Gained | +50 Trust with Ross |
Walkthrough
Speak to Ross at Howling Hill. He explains that bandits have been raiding the apothecary and requests an investigation.
Travel to the Halssius Apothecary, located south of the Anvil Hill Southern Watchtower. Look for a stranger in a yellow coat near the fence on the right side of the apothecary grounds.
Talk to the stranger. He explains that bandits raided the location and took supplies, leaving the locals anxious about future attacks. He says he will call on the Greymanes if they are attacked again.
(Optional) Enter the apothecary to collect the Mild Herbal Tea recipe and the memory "Halssius Apothecary" (filed under Hernand > Clues). In a nearby abandoned building, pick up the "Letter From a Mother" document, which unlocks the memory "Mother and Son" (filed under Hernand > Recollections).
Return to Ross at Howling Hill and report what the man at the apothecary told you. The quest completes upon delivering the information.
Relationship with Other Camp NPCs
Ross works alongside several other key NPCs who keep Greymane Camp running. Each fills a distinct support role, and together they form the backbone of the camp's daily operations.
NPC | Camp Role | Relationship to Ross |
|---|---|---|
Quartermaster (provisions and supply chest) | Arrives at camp alongside Ross; the two are among the first Greymanes to return | |
Investigator and intelligence support | Present at Hills of No Return when Ross is first encountered | |
Scout and freesword comrade | One of the first two dispatachable freeswords Ross manages | |
Freesword comrade | One of the first two dispatchable freeswords Ross manages |
Unlike freesword comrades such as Luke and Ronald, Ross cannot be sent on dispatch missions himself. He is classified as a story character who provides camp services rather than a deployable field operative.
Tactical Tips
Speak to Ross regularly to check for new dispatch missions as the camp expands. New missions often unlock following main story progression.
Ross handles comrade reassignment. Once a freesword's current mission is complete, talk to Ross to assign them to a new task right away. Keeping every freesword on active duty maximizes passive resource income.
Prioritize construction and expansion missions through Ross before queueing food or trade missions. Camp upgrades unlock new buildings and additional companion slots.
You do not need to visit Ross in person every time. Open the world map, hover over the Greymane Camp icon, and select the Missions tab to manage dispatch remotely.
Complete Ross's Request as soon as it becomes available in Chapter 4. The Inventory Expansion +3 reward is valuable early in the game, and the quest itself is short.
Companions with higher trust perform better on dispatch missions. Building trust through shared meals, gifts, and companion quests increases dispatch success rates over time.
