Arnold

Overview

Arnold is a Freesword with the Engineering skill at Greymane Camp in Crimson Desert. He is the first engineer most players encounter and is essential for construction-oriented dispatch missions, including building wagons and the Cloudcart (hot air balloon). Arnold is recruited alongside Colton and Fred during the "A Rumor in St. Halssius" faction quest.

A grave illness years ago transformed this once-careless man into someone obsessed with hygiene after returning from death's doorstep. He now avoids filth at all costs and tries to keep any facilities immaculate.

Without an engineer in the camp roster, construction dispatch options remain locked even if the player has the required resources. Arnold's recruitment is a critical milestone in camp progression, unlocking vehicle construction and various camp expansion projects.

Role

Arnold is classified as a Ranged Combatant in the Freesword roster. Unlike camp staff NPCs such as Ben or Kamu, Arnold can be sent on dispatch missions through the Base Camp Freesword Management Office run by Ross. His Engineering skill is what makes him unique: it allows him to participate in construction-oriented dispatch missions that other Freeswords cannot handle.

Skills

Arnold has three skills that determine which dispatch missions he can participate in:

Arnold's skills level up through Howling Hill camp upgrades. Standard progression follows Level 1 (10% bonus), Level 2 (30% bonus), and Level 3 (60% bonus).

Key Unlocks

Having Arnold (or another engineer) at camp enables:

• Wagon construction via the Timberturner Wainwright dispatch (located west of the House of Healing)

• Cloudcart (hot air balloon) construction

• Various camp expansion and building projects

How to Recruit

Arnold is recruited by completing the "A Rumor in St. Halssius" faction quest. This quest is part of the Reuniting with Comrades sub-chain within the Grounds of the Sunrise questline. It becomes available after completing "A Rumor at the Goldleaf Trading Post" and is rated as Easy difficulty with an estimated completion time of about 14 minutes.

The quest sends Kliff to the St. Halssius area in the Hernand region to investigate a rumor, check suspicious individuals, and check in with a local informant. Upon completion, Arnold, Colton, and Fred are reunited with the Greymanes.

After completing the quest, Arnold appears in the Freesword roster at the Base Camp Freesword Management Office run by Ross. He can immediately be assigned to engineering dispatch missions. His Level 1 Engineer skill is sufficient for all initial construction tasks, including Brice's Request.

Importance in Quest Chain

Arnold's presence at camp is a prerequisite for Brice's Request, a step in the Grounds of the Sunrise quest chain that leads to unlocking Eric (the barber) and Oliver (the dye merchant). If you skip or delay Arnold's recruitment quest, the entire chain stalls.

Other Engineers

Arnold is not the only Freesword who can serve as an engineer. Several other companions either start with the Engineering skill or can unlock it by leveling up through dispatch missions.
