Spoiler Warning
This article contains major story spoilers for Crimson Desert. If you have not completed the main campaign through Chapter 12: The Abyss and the Epilogue: Journey's End, proceed with caution. Key plot points, character fates, and endgame details are discussed throughout.
Overview
Crimson Desert features a single main storyline that concludes with a definitive ending. Unlike many RPGs with branching narrative paths, Crimson Desert does not offer multiple endings based on dialogue choices or moral decisions. Instead, the game uses a completion-based system: how much side content you finish before reaching the final chapters determines whether you see the standard ending or the extended definitive ending.
Pearl Abyss confirmed during their 2024 investor relations session at Kiwoom Corp Day that Crimson Desert "will offer around 50 to 80 hours of gameplay and will have a definitive ending as a single-player game." The 50-hour mark corresponds to players who focus exclusively on the main story, while the 80-hour figure reflects players who engage deeply with faction quests, companion questlines, and other side content required to unlock the full conclusion.
Player choices throughout the game do not affect which ending you receive. Dialogue options and in-game decisions primarily influence flavor elements such as NPC reactions, minor story details, and certain rewards. The ending you see is determined entirely by your level of engagement with the world of Pywel.
Standard Ending
The standard ending is the conclusion players reach by completing only the main story quests across all twelve chapters. This path takes approximately 50 hours and follows Kliff and the Greymane mercenaries through the campaign's core narrative: rebuilding the clan after the Black Bears ambush, navigating the political landscape of Hernand, and ultimately confronting the Abyss threat in the final chapters.
The main story is divided into a Prologue, twelve numbered chapters, and an Epilogue, containing 168 individual quests grouped into story arcs. The standard ending provides a proper conclusion with full credits. The final chapter, Chapter 12: The Abyss, is the most combat-intensive chapter in the game, culminating in the campaign's climactic boss encounters inside the Abyss realm. After defeating the final boss, a post-credits sequence leads into the Epilogue: Journey's End, which wraps up the narrative with eight quests that revisit key locations and characters across Pywel.
The standard ending is a complete and satisfying conclusion on its own. Players who reach it will have experienced the full arc of Kliff's story, the Greymanes' rise from ruin, and the resolution of the Abyss crisis. However, certain narrative threads and character arcs tied to side content will remain unresolved if you skipped the associated questlines.
Definitive Ending
The definitive ending is an extended version of the game's conclusion that includes additional story content beyond what the standard ending provides. It does not replace the standard ending; rather, it builds upon it with extra scenes, deeper character moments, and narrative threads that are only available to players who completed significant amounts of side content before finishing the campaign.
To reach the definitive ending, you need to extend your playtime to roughly 80 hours by engaging deeply with side content. The additional 30 or so hours (compared to the 50-hour main story) come from completing companion questlines, faction quest chains, and various world activities that expand the narrative and develop your characters beyond what the main story alone provides.
The key distinction is that the definitive ending rewards players who took the time to explore Pywel's side stories. These stories are not just filler; they provide context, develop relationships, and set up narrative payoffs that only appear in the extended conclusion. If you want to see everything the game's story has to offer, prioritize side content alongside the main campaign rather than saving it all for post-game.
Requirements for the Definitive Ending
There is no single checklist or percentage counter that unlocks the definitive ending. Instead, the game tracks your overall engagement with side content and triggers the extended conclusion when you have completed enough of it. Based on player reports and guide analysis, the following categories of content contribute toward unlocking the definitive ending:
Companion Questlines
Companion questlines are among the most important content for reaching the definitive ending. These quests develop the stories of the Greymane members and other allied characters, providing deeper backstory and personal arcs that feed into the extended conclusion. The Greymane Commissions are a set of companion-focused quests that expand your relationships with key party members.
Notable companion questlines include:
Quest | Character | Description |
|---|---|---|
Carl | A personal errand for the Greymane craftsman | |
Ronnie | Assisting a fellow mercenary with unfinished business | |
Ross | Helping the veteran with a personal matter | |
Bruna | Infiltrating Lioncrest Manor for a companion's favor | |
Tranan | A request from the Greymane elder | |
Brice | Aiding a camp member with a personal errand | |
Ronald | Assisting with a supply-related task | |
Pierce | Helping a companion with a favor |
Each completed Greymane Commission also rewards a Medium Bag (+3 inventory slots), making them valuable for gameplay progression as well as narrative completeness. With 27 total commissions available across the game, completing them all provides +81 inventory slots.
Faction Quests
Faction quests are Crimson Desert's primary side quest system. They are organized under named factions, each with their own NPCs, storylines, and reward pools. Completing faction quest chains contributes to the overall side content engagement that determines your ending. Key factions include:
Faction | Location | Quest Focus |
|---|---|---|
The Greymanes | Clan rebuilding, recruitment, and camp development | |
Bounty hunting and monster elimination | ||
Ruins exploration and bandit clearing | ||
Political intrigue and ancient threats | ||
Trade protection and threat elimination | ||
Pororin Forest Guardians | Forest ecology and research | |
Arcane knowledge and power refinement | ||
Various | Ruin exploration and liberation | |
Sanctum cleansing and war machine destruction | ||
Pailune Militia | Regional defense and succession disputes | |
House Wells | Regional threats and Deathchime quest |
None of these faction quests are missable. You can complete them at any point during the campaign or in the post-game. However, completing them before the final chapters ensures they contribute to unlocking the definitive ending. Some faction quests are gated behind reputation thresholds, so building standing with key factions early keeps your options open as you progress.
Hernand Commissions
Hernand Commissions are a separate category of side quests given by NPCs throughout the city of Hernand. These range from personal favors to community tasks, and they deepen your connection to the city and its inhabitants. Notable commissions include Bruna's Request (which involves infiltrating Lioncrest Manor), Rhett's Request, Renee's Request, and several others. Each commission contributes to your overall side content progress.
Other Contributing Content
Beyond companion quests and faction quests, other activities contribute to reaching the definitive ending:
Greymane faction quests: Quests like Record of the Greymanes, The Greymanes' New Fangs, Strongbox with Wheels, and Embers of Return focus on rebuilding the clan and add to the overall narrative progression.
Hernand political quests: Quests such as Gunshot Heard Throughout the Mountains and Commotion in the Spire deal with the political landscape of Hernand and its noble houses.
Challenges: Completing challenges across the map, which are unlocked by finding Sealed Abyss Artifacts, contributes to overall world engagement.
Knowledge System: Filling out Knowledge entries by interacting with NPCs, examining objects, and exploring all regions provides a measurable indicator of world engagement.
The Epilogue: Journey's End
Both the standard and definitive endings lead into the Epilogue: Journey's End, the game's concluding chapter. The Epilogue is primarily narrative and exploratory, with minimal combat. It spans 8 quests that serve as a farewell tour across Pywel:
Quest | Type | Location |
|---|---|---|
Cutscene / Exploration | ||
Exploration / Dialogue | ||
Cutscene / Dialogue | Calphade | |
The Heart of Pywel | Exploration / Dialogue | Central Pywel |
The Desert's Edge | Exploration / Combat | Desert borderlands |
The Enduring Flame | Cutscene / Dialogue | Supply villages |
Evolving City | Exploration / Dialogue | |
New Horizons | Cutscene / Final |
Players who reached the definitive ending will experience additional dialogue, extended scenes, and deeper character interactions during these Epilogue quests compared to the standard ending. The extra content reflects the relationships and storylines built up through the side content completed during the campaign.
The Epilogue concludes with New Horizons, where Kliff gathers with the surviving Greymane members at camp for a final farewell. After the ending cinematic and credits roll, the game returns you to the open world with all your equipment and progress intact.
Choices and Their Impact
Crimson Desert does not function like a traditional branching RPG. The game features dialogue options and in-game decisions throughout the campaign, but these primarily affect:
NPC reactions: How characters respond to you in subsequent conversations.
Minor story details: Small narrative variations that do not change the overall plot direction.
Rewards: Certain quest rewards may differ slightly based on your choices.
World interactions: Flavor text and ambient dialogue may change based on prior decisions.
Crucially, none of these choices determine which ending you receive. The standard-versus-definitive distinction is based entirely on side content completion. If you want the definitive ending, focus on completing the world rather than worrying about "correct" dialogue options.
Post-Ending Content
After the credits roll, your save file continues from the post-Epilogue state. The world of Pywel remains fully open for continued exploration. All regions, NPCs, vendors, and services continue to operate normally.
Content available after the ending includes:
Remaining faction quests: Any incomplete faction quests can still be finished. Quest givers remain in their usual locations.
Optional bosses: Open-world field bosses respawn after approximately one in-game week. Story bosses tied to specific chapters do not respawn.
Challenges: All challenges can be completed or reattempted for improved rankings.
Collectibles: Treasure maps, ancient ruins puzzles, hidden items, and Knowledge entries remain available.
Camp relocation: The Reconstructing Pailune questline can be completed to relocate the Greymane Camp from Howling Hill to Pailune.
Dispatch missions: The Freesword Dispatch System continues running, letting you send companions on timed missions to earn resources and silver.

New Game Plus
New Game Plus becomes available after completing the main story. Starting a New Game Plus playthrough allows you to begin the campaign again while retaining your character stats, skills, and some equipment from the previous run. Enemies and bosses in New Game Plus are significantly stronger and tougher to defeat, providing a heightened challenge for experienced players. Since Crimson Desert has no selectable difficulty settings, New Game Plus serves as the primary way to experience increased difficulty.
Tips for Reaching the Definitive Ending
Do side content alongside the main story. Do not save everything for the post-game. The definitive ending is determined by what you have completed before finishing the final chapters, so weave faction quests and companion requests into your natural progression.
Build faction reputation early. Some quests are gated behind faction reputation thresholds. Completing early faction quests for House Celeste, House Roberts, and the Goldleaf Merchant Guild opens up later quest chains that contribute toward the definitive ending.
Complete Greymane Commissions. These companion-focused quests are relatively quick to finish and provide both narrative depth and practical rewards (Medium Bags for inventory expansion). Prioritize them between main story chapters.
Explore thoroughly. The game rewards exploration with Knowledge entries, Sealed Abyss Artifacts, and discovery of new faction quests. Take time to visit each region fully before moving on.
Do not rush the final chapters. Chapters 10, 11, and 12 escalate rapidly in intensity. Make sure you have completed the bulk of your side content before entering Chapter 10: Counterattack, as the pacing makes it difficult to step away for extended side quest sessions.
Check the journal regularly. The quest journal tracks available faction quests and commissions. Check it periodically to ensure you have not missed any active questlines.
