Overview
Kailok the Hornsplitter is a boss in Crimson Desert encountered during the main quest "Cheers Echoing from the Edge" in Hernand. He is the head of the Goldleaf Merchant Guild and runs Hernand's trade operations through corruption and intimidation. Players fight him in a one-on-one Rakkash (a goblin duel) at the Goldleaf Guildhouse after Shakatu calls him out for the challenge.
Kailok has only a single health bar, which may suggest an easy fight. That is misleading. His extreme agility and swift evasive movements make him one of the trickier early bosses because landing clean hits is difficult. He represents a significant difficulty spike compared to earlier encounters.

Lore
Kailok was frail and pale since childhood and spent his early years being bullied. At some point he obtained an Abyss Artifact that granted him immense physical power, including superhuman speed and agility. With this newfound strength he seized control of the Goldleaf Merchant Guild and used corrupt officials and hired bandits to dominate trade in Hernand and the surrounding region.
Shakatu, seeking to establish supply routes and connections for the Greymane Camp, recognizes that Kailok's stranglehold on Hernand's trade must be broken. The Rakkash tradition provides a legitimate path to challenge Kailok's leadership directly.
Preparation
This fight is a notable difficulty jump from earlier bosses. Arriving well-prepared makes a large difference.
Gear
Equip tier two helm, armor, and gloves at minimum. Basic earrings, rings, and necklace provide small but useful stat bonuses.
Iron and Copper Ore upgrades are available from the Anvil Hill blacksmith in Hernand. Upgrade your equipment before the fight.
A sword and shield loadout is strongly recommended. The shield allows stamina-efficient blocking that is critical for surviving Kailok's combos and ranged waves.
Consumables
Stock roughly 20 Grilled Meat. Purchase raw meat from the butcher in Hernand and prepare it at the nearby cooking pot.
Additional food items from merchants can supplement your healing supply.
Skills
Keen Senses (at least level 2): Unlocks Dodge, which is essential for avoiding Kailok's ranged attacks.
Force Palm (ideally level 3): The three-hit combo stuns Kailok and knocks him off his feet, creating a significant damage window.
Invest in the Health and Stamina trees before this fight. Stamina directly impacts your ability to block, dodge, and attack.
Unarmed Combat and grappling moves (Throw, Giant Swing, Lariat) are highly effective. This is one of the last boss fights where you can physically grab the boss and throw him around.
Attack Patterns
Attack | Type | Description | Counter |
|---|---|---|---|
Overhead Strike | Melee | A downward slash with a brief windup animation. | Block with shield for a counterattack window. Follow up with heavy attacks. |
Rapier Wave | Ranged | Swings his rapier to release a spinning wave in a linear path. Covers good distance. | Cannot be deflected. Sidestep left or right, then dash forward to close the gap. |
Four Slash Combo | Melee | A rapid four-hit close-range sword combo. | Block the sequence with your shield. The recovery after the fourth hit creates a punish window. |
Multi Slash | Melee | A flurry of rapid cuts at close range. | Block and wait for the string to end. Counterattack during recovery. |
Overhead Slash | Melee | A heavy overhead swing, slightly slower than the Overhead Strike. | Blockable. Time a parry for a bigger counterattack opportunity. |
Superarmor Burst | Special | Kailok glows blue and becomes temporarily invulnerable, then fires significant ranged damage. | Back away immediately. Do not try to attack through superarmor. Block the ranged follow-up or dodge laterally. |
Strategy
Defensive Approach (Recommended)
The safest way to beat Kailok is a patient, defense-first approach. Keep your shield up and wait for him to commit to attack strings. His melee combos (Four Slash Combo, Multi Slash, Overhead Slash) are all blockable. After blocking a combo, counter with two or three heavy attacks to deal damage. Do not overextend; save enough stamina to block the next sequence.
His Rapier Wave attacks cannot be deflected or blocked efficiently. When you see him prepare a ranged wave, sidestep to the left or right instead of trying to block. After dodging the wave, dash forward to close the distance and punish with melee strikes before he can start another ranged attack.
When Kailok enters superarmor (blue glow), disengage immediately. He is invulnerable during this state and follows up with a heavy ranged burst. Create distance, block or dodge the follow-up, and then re-engage.
Aggressive Approach (Wrestling)
An alternative strategy is to use Kliff's wrestling and grappling moves directly. This is one of the last boss fights where the boss can be physically grabbed, thrown, and slammed. Dropkicks, body throws, and German suplex-style slams all work and deal good damage while keeping Kailok grounded.
Force Palm is extremely effective here. At level 3, the three-hit combo stuns Kailok and knocks him off his feet, giving you a window for follow-up damage while he is on the ground.
Stamina Management
Stamina is the single most important resource in this fight. It governs blocking, dodging, and heavy attacks. If your stamina runs out, you cannot block his combos and will take heavy damage. Keep your shield lowered between attack strings to regenerate stamina. Avoid using too many consecutive heavy attacks, as they drain stamina quickly. If you find yourself getting overwhelmed, consider reducing fancy skill usage and focusing purely on block and counter rhythms.
Lock-On
Use lock-on targeting to keep Kailok centered on screen (CTRL on keyboard, LB on controller). His speed makes it easy to lose track of him otherwise. Set him as a fixed target (Caps Lock or D-pad down) so the camera stays locked even during evasive maneuvers.
Rewards
Defeating Kailok yields the following rewards:
Reward | Type | Details |
|---|---|---|
Sword of the Lord | Weapon | A rapier that can cast wave attacks. Particularly strong for quick attack builds. |
Evasive Roll | Skill | A defensive skill learned by baiting the move during the fight. Grants an evasive rolling dodge. |
7 Iron Ore | Crafting material | Used for weapon and armor upgrades at the blacksmith. |
2 Copper Ore | Crafting material | Used for weapon and armor upgrades at the blacksmith. |
The Evasive Roll skill is earned by baiting Kailok into performing an evasive maneuver twice during the fight. Once you have observed it enough times, the skill becomes available in your skill tree. This is one of the key Observation rewards from boss fights.
Story Significance
Defeating Kailok allows Shakatu to assume leadership of the Goldleaf Merchant Guild. This is a pivotal moment in the early game because Shakatu's new position opens supply routes and trade connections that the Greymane Camp desperately needs. Without this victory, the Greymanes cannot secure the resources required to establish themselves in Hernand and expand across Pywel.
The quest ties into the broader faction dynamics of the region. Clearing Kailok and his guards is one of the first major steps toward building the Greymanes' influence and reputation among Hernand's power structures.
