Overview
Pokemon Pokopia features a dynamic weather system that affects which Pokemon appear, how the environment behaves, and how comfortable certain Pokemon feel. The game has three weather states: Sunny, Rainy, and Cloudy (the default neutral state). Players can manually control weather by constructing weather change sites using Castform Weather Charms.
Unlike previous Pokemon games where weather changes randomly, weather in Pokopia is primarily player-controlled. The lore explanation is that Kyogre, the legendary sea deity responsible for rain, withdrew to the ocean floor for a nap, which stopped the rain across the region. Players must actively restore weather conditions through building weather sites. The default state when no weather has been triggered is Cloudy.
Weather manipulation is essential for Pokedex completion, as several Pokemon only spawn under specific weather conditions. It also interacts with the humidity system, which affects Pokemon comfort levels and Environment Level progression.
Weather States
Weather | How to Trigger | Visual Effects |
|---|---|---|
Cloudy | Default state. Returns when no weather site is active. | Neutral lighting, overcast skies, no precipitation. |
Rainy | Activate a Rain Dance Site with a Water specialty Pokemon. | Darker skies, rain particles, puddles form, increased humidity. |
Sunny | Activate a Sunny Day Site with a Burn specialty Pokemon. | Bright lighting, enhanced colors, sharper shadows, decreased humidity. |
Some Pokemon spawn tables list "Sunny/Cloudy" as a combined condition, meaning those Pokemon appear in either sunny or cloudy weather but not rain. Others list "Cloudy" as a distinct state, separate from both Sunny and Rainy.
Weather Change Sites
The Rain Dance Site (Habitat #041) and Sunny Day Site (Habitat #042) are the two weather-controlling habitats. They are structurally identical and use the same items. The only difference is which direction the Castform Weather Charms are facing when you activate the site.
Setup Requirements
To build a weather change site, you need:
A wall or blocks to mount the charms against
2 Castform Weather Charms (hung on the wall, one on each side)
1 Plated Food (any food works; Leppa Berries are the most common choice)
1 Pokemon with the appropriate specialty (Water for Rain, Burn for Sunny)
How to Activate
Build some blocks or use an existing wall to create a mounting surface.
Hang the two Castform Weather Charms on the wall, one on each side.
Interact with each charm to flip it to the desired form. Both charms must match: both Rain Form for rain, both Sunny Form for sun. Mismatched charms will not trigger the weather change.
Place food on the Plated Food dish (any food item works).
Bring a Pokemon with the matching specialty to the site.
The Pokemon eats the food offering and performs either Rain Dance or Sunny Day.
The weather changes shortly after the dance is completed.
Each area can have its own weather change site, allowing you to have rain in one area and sunshine in another simultaneously. The charms are reusable; you only need to provide a new food offering each time you want to trigger a weather change.
Castform Weather Charms
Castform Weather Charms are special wall-mountable items that can be flipped between Rain Form and Sunny Form by interacting with them. You need two matching charms for each weather site. A single set of two charms can be reused for either weather type simply by flipping them to the desired form.
How to Obtain
Source | Details |
|---|---|
Professor Tangrowth (Story) | Received during the "Yawn Up a Storm" quest in the Withered Wasteland when Squirtle asks you to build a Rain Dance site to raise humidity for Slowpoke. |
Professor Tangrowth's Trolley | Return to the starting cave area (past where Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle live, up the steps). Check Professor Tangrowth's trolley of junk and press A to collect extra charms. |
Pokemon Center Terminal | Purchase additional charms from any rebuilt Pokemon Center's PC terminal. This is the fastest way to get a second charm for your first weather site. |
Dream Island Towers | Climb the ladder in the starting tower of every Dream Island you visit. A Castform Weather Charm is typically found at the top. One of the most consistent sources. |
Lost Relics | Charms occasionally appear from glowing spots in the ground, water ripples, or when using a Search specialty Pokemon with the Dowsing Machine ability. |
Pokemon Required for Weather Dances
Rain Dance (Water Specialty)
Any Pokemon with the Water specialty can perform Rain Dance at a weather site. Notable Water specialty Pokemon include:
Squirtle, Wartortle, Blastoise
Shellos, Gastrodon
Marill, Azumarill
Piplup, Prinplup
Slowpoke, Slowbro
Lapras
Sunny Day (Burn Specialty)
Any Pokemon with the Burn specialty can perform Sunny Day at a weather site. Notable Burn specialty Pokemon include:
Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard
Torchic, Combusken, Blaziken
Growlithe, Arcanine
Typhlosion
Magby
Weather-Exclusive Pokemon
Several Pokemon only appear during specific weather conditions. Controlling the weather is required for full Pokedex completion.
Rain-Only Pokemon
Pokemon | Type | Habitat | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Goomy | Dragon | Rain Dance Site | First stage of the Goodra evolution line. Only appears during rain. Can be found in any area. |
Sliggoo | Dragon | Hydrated Tall Grass | Second stage. Evolves from Goomy. Rain-only. |
Goodra | Dragon | Rain habitat | Final stage. The only Dragon pseudo-legendary available under rain conditions. |
Empoleon | Water/Steel | Waterwheel Spot | Rain-exclusive. Requires rainy weather to appear at its habitat. |
Sun-Only Pokemon
Pokemon | Type | Habitat | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Charmander | Fire | Tall Grass | Spawns in Sunny or Cloudy weather. Separate from the starter Charmander. |
Charmeleon | Fire | Campsite | Spawns in Sunny or Cloudy weather. |
Charizard | Fire | Berry-fest Campsite / Tall Grass | Spawns in Sunny or Cloudy weather. The iconic Fire/Flying-type. |
Cacnea | Grass | Sunny Day Site | Exclusively appears during sunny conditions. The only pure sun-exclusive Pokemon. |
Note: The Charmander evolution line spawns in both Sunny and Cloudy conditions (but not Rain), while Cacnea requires specifically Sunny weather. The majority of the 300 Pokemon in the game spawn under "All Day, All Weather" conditions.
Humidity System
Humidity is a separate but related mechanic that measures moisture levels in each area on a scale of 0 to 100. Unlike weather, which is a temporary condition you trigger, humidity is an ambient stat affected by water features, vegetation, and structures. Humidity directly impacts Pokemon comfort levels:
Water and Grass types prefer high humidity. Lush vegetation, watered plants, and water features boost their comfort.
Fire types dislike humidity. High moisture levels actively drag down Fire-type Pokemon's comfort scores, lowering the overall Environment Level.
Raising Humidity
Method | Details |
|---|---|
Water Gun | Spray water on dried dirt and withered plants to revitalize them. Watered vegetation passively increases humidity. |
Open water pathways | Use Rock Smash on bubbling rocks to release blocked water sources. |
Sprinklers | Purchase from the PC Shop (50 Life Coins). Automatically water nearby vegetation. |
Horsea Fountains | Purchase from the PC Shop (50 Life Coins). Decorative water features that boost ambient humidity. |
Field of Flowers habitat | Building this habitat passively increases humidity in the surrounding area. |
Rain Dance | Triggering rain at a weather site temporarily boosts area humidity. |
Lowering Humidity
Move habitats away from water sources and wet areas.
Place campfires near dry-loving Pokemon to create warmer, drier zones.
Smooth Rock: A special item found in a Pokeball in the cave northwest of the Withered Wasteland Pokemon Center. Placing it lowers humidity in the surrounding area.
Activate Sunny Day at a weather site to temporarily lower area humidity.
Checking Humidity
Ask a Pokemon with the Yawn specialty (like Slowpoke) to follow you and perform Yawn in an area. The louder and longer the yawn, the higher the humidity. A numerical score appears showing the humidity level out of 100. This is introduced during the "Yawn Up a Storm" quest in the Withered Wasteland.
Climate Zone Strategy
Managing humidity effectively requires creating separate climate zones. Group Water and Grass types together in humid areas with plenty of watered vegetation, Sprinklers, and water features. Keep Fire types in drier zones with campfires and the Smooth Rock. Some dwelling types (like Leaf Dens) buffer Pokemon from the surrounding humidity, allowing comfortable living regardless of the broader area climate.
Effects on Gameplay
Aspect | Rain Effect | Sun Effect |
|---|---|---|
Pokemon spawns | Goomy, Sliggoo, Goodra, Empoleon appear | Charmander line and Cacnea appear |
Pokemon comfort | Water and Grass types gain comfort; Fire types lose comfort | Fire types gain comfort; Water types may lose comfort |
Humidity | Increases ambient humidity in the area | Decreases ambient humidity in the area |
Story blocks | Rain softens hardened blocks (e.g., freeing Onix in Withered Wasteland) | No known story-specific effect |
Environment visuals | Darker skies, rain particles, puddles form | Bright lighting, enhanced colors, shadows sharpen |
Note: Pokemon Pokopia has no battle system. Pokemon specialties are utility abilities (Water, Burn, Build, Chop, etc.) used for environmental manipulation, not combat. Rain Dance and Sunny Day exist purely as environmental effects for spawning Pokemon and affecting humidity, not as battle moves.
Connection to the Story
Weather manipulation is introduced during the "Yawn Up a Storm" Important Request in the Withered Wasteland. The story explains that Kyogre, the legendary sea deity responsible for rain, withdrew to the ocean floor for a long nap, which caused the rain to stop and the land to dry out. Squirtle requests help building a Rain Dance site to increase humidity for Slowpoke. Professor Tangrowth provides your first Castform Weather Charm during this quest.
Triggering rain is required to soften hardened blocks trapping Onix in the Withered Wasteland. Without activating rain, players cannot free Onix or progress the main story in that area. Befriending Kyogre and having it return is what restores rain as part of the main story.
After completing this quest, weather sites can be built freely in any area. The story does not require specific weather conditions beyond the Withered Wasteland quest, but weather manipulation is strongly recommended for Pokedex completion and comfort optimization.
Tips
Set up weather sites early in each area to access weather-exclusive Pokemon as soon as possible.
Each area can have its own weather site. Run rain in areas with Water/Grass types and sun in areas with Fire types to maximize comfort across all zones.
Castform Weather Charms are reusable and can be flipped between forms. You only need to provide a new food offering each time. Leppa Berries are abundant and work for any weather activation.
Collect extra charms from Dream Island towers. Each island's starting tower typically has one, giving you enough to set up weather sites in every area.
Both charms on a weather site must face the same direction. If weather is not changing, check that both charms match (both Rain Form or both Sunny Form).
Buy Sprinklers and Horsea Fountains (50 Life Coins each) from the PC Shop to passively boost humidity in areas with Water and Grass types.
Place the Smooth Rock in areas where Fire types live to lower humidity and keep them comfortable.
Create humidity zones for type-compatible Pokemon. Mixing Water types and Fire types in the same zone will always leave one group unhappy, dragging down your Environment Level.
Goomy's entire evolution line (Goomy, Sliggoo, Goodra) plus Empoleon require rain. Keep rain active in one area for an extended period to collect all four.
The wild Charmander line (Sunny/Cloudy spawns) is separate from the starter Charmander you meet at the beginning. You need non-rainy weather to complete the Fire-type section of the Pokedex.
Check humidity using Slowpoke's Yawn ability. The numerical score (out of 100) helps you precisely calibrate zones for different Pokemon types.
