Overview
Water management is a core building mechanic in Pokemon Pokopia. Players can create new water sources, build pools and rivers, construct waterfalls, and relocate different liquid types across their islands. These abilities are essential for powering waterwheels, auto-watering crops, raising humidity, creating habitats, and unlocking new Pokemon. The primary tool for water manipulation is the Suck Up Liquids ability taught by Paldean Wooper.
Unlocking Water Placement
Water placement requires completing a specific quest chain in Bleak Beach:
Progress through the Bleak Beach story until Piplup's quests become available.
Complete Piplup's tasks, which include learning Surf and understanding how waterwheels work.
Piplup gives the "Make a Waterfall" quest.
Build the Marshy Tall Grass habitat and feed Paldean Wooper 3 Tomatoes to learn the Suck Up Liquids ability.
How to Place Water
Using the Suck Ability
The Suck ability lets Ditto inhale liquids and spit them out elsewhere:
Action | Controls |
|---|---|
Inhale liquid | Stand in/near water, hold Y + press ZR |
Store liquid | Ditto inflates and holds the liquid in its mouth |
Spit out liquid | Face target location, press A |
Drain a water source | Hold Y + ZR until the area dries up completely |
Same-biome restriction: You can only place liquid within the same biome where you obtained it. Water sucked up in Rocky Ridges can only be placed in Rocky Ridges, not carried to other areas.
Using Vending Machine Drinks
Powered vending machines dispense one random drink per day. Each drink fills Ditto with a different liquid type that can be spat out to create water sources:
Drink | Liquid Created | Flavor |
|---|---|---|
Fresh Water | Regular water | Bland |
Soda Pop | Seawater | Dry |
Moomoo Milk Coffee | Muddy water | Sweet |
Roserade Tea | Bitter | |
Chili Sauce | Lava | Spicy |
Vending machines require electricity to operate. Connect them to a power source via Utility Poles or use a Generate-specialty Pokemon. Known vending machine locations include northern Withered Wasteland (near the windmill) and near waterwheels in Bleak Beach.
Creating Waterfalls
Waterfalls are created by directing water over a cliff edge. There are three approaches:
Method 1: Suck and Spit (Most Reliable)
Suck up water from any existing water source.
Climb to an elevated position above where you want the waterfall.
Use Rock Smash to create an indent or notch in the cliff face.
Aim carefully so the blue targeting tile sits inside the indent.
Press A to release the water. It will flow down the cliff as a waterfall.
Method 2: Redirect Existing Water
If a natural water source is near a cliff edge, break blocks between the water and the edge to let the water flow downward naturally.
Method 3: Vending Machine Drink
Drink any liquid from a vending machine, climb to a high point, and spit the liquid over a cliff edge. This works with all five drink types, including lava (Chili Sauce).
Creating Pools and Ponds
To create a self-sustaining pool that refills automatically:
Dig a 2x2 hole in the ground using Rock Smash.
Fill all four spaces with liquid using the Suck ability.
The pool becomes a permanent, self-replenishing water source that refills when scooped.
Pools smaller than 2x2 may drain permanently when water is removed from them. Always create at least a 2x2 area for a stable water source.
Practical Uses
Use | Details |
|---|---|
Crop watering | Water flowing beside crop fields auto-waters plants. Eliminates the need for manual Water Gun watering. |
Waterwheel power | Create a waterfall near a waterwheel to power it for electricity generation. Also creates the Waterwheel Spot habitat (attracts Prinplup/Empoleon). |
Water sources raise the humidity level in Withered Wasteland, contributing to story progression. | |
Habitat creation | Many habitats require water tiles. Hot springs, fishing spots, and waterfall habitats all need water placement. |
Pokemon attraction | Water-type Pokemon are drawn to areas with water features. More water generally means more Water-type spawns. |
Lava manipulation | Chili Sauce lava combined with Water Gun creates solid walkable blocks, useful for bridge-building and terrain shaping. |
Riding Waterfalls
After learning the Waterfall ability from Gyarados in Sparkling Skylands, the player can ride up waterfalls while in Surf mode. Press A at the base of a waterfall to travel upward. This enables vertical navigation and access to elevated areas. Player-created waterfalls also support this ability.
Tips
Always create pools as 2x2 or larger. Smaller pools drain permanently and cannot self-replenish.
Water placed near crop fields eliminates manual watering entirely. Set this up early to save time on farming.
Waterfalls near waterwheels produce free electricity. One waterfall can power an entire area if connected with Utility Poles.
Use Chili Sauce (lava) from vending machines combined with Water Gun to create custom bridges and platforms.
Drain unwanted water by holding Y + ZR until the area dries up. This is useful for terraforming and reshaping terrain.
Create an indent in the cliff face before releasing water for a waterfall. Without a notch, the water may not flow correctly.
