Overview
The Search specialty lets Pokemon find buried treasures when paired with the Dowsing Machine. Walk around with a Search Pokemon following you and use the Dowsing Machine to detect underground items. When treasure is nearby, the Pokemon reacts to alert you.
How to Use
Obtain the Dowsing Machine (complete Hitmonchan's request in Withered Wasteland).
Have a Search Pokemon follow you.
Hold the Dowsing Machine and press A while walking to scan the ground.
When the Pokemon reacts, a buried item is nearby.
Use Rock Smash to dig up the treasure.

Complete Hitmonchan's request in Withered Wasteland to obtain the Dowsing Machine
Keep the Dowsing Machine equipped in your inventory
Have a Search Pokemon follow you (press D-pad Up to summon one)
Hold A to scan. The Dowsing Machine shows a directional arrow; the Search Pokemon reacts with excitement when buried items are nearby
Use Rock Smash to dig up the item. Once dug, take Lost Relics to Professor Tangrowth for appraisal via the Appraise specialty

Search does not detect overworld items you can see (like berries on trees) or items inside chests. It only finds buried objects.
Tips
Sableye is the best dedicated Search Pokemon because it is event-exclusive and has no other specialty distractions. Befriend it during the Sableye Event.
Umbreon's comfort preferences are strict, but it is the only Search Pokemon in the Eeveelution family. Useful for Eevee-focused settlements.
Sunday has a higher Lost Relic spawn rate. Stockpile relics on Sundays and appraise them on other days.
Pairing Search with Pokemon that have multiple specialties (Drilbur, Pidgey) gives you dual-purpose residents.
