Overview
"Yawn Up a Storm" is the first major Important Request in Pokemon Pokopia, given by Professor Tangrowth in the Withered Wasteland. The quest involves finding Slowpoke, increasing the area's humidity to make it rain, and ultimately rescuing Onix from a cave. Completing this quest is required to rebuild the Withered Wasteland's Pokemon Center, since Onix has the Bulldoze specialty needed for Pokemon Center construction.
Prerequisites
Access to the Withered Wasteland (available from the start of the game)
Learned Water Gun from Squirtle
Learned Leafage from Bulbasaur
Basic familiarity with habitat building
Walkthrough
Step 1: Find Slowpoke
Build a Seaside Tall Grass habitat near the ocean at the southern end of the Withered Wasteland. Pull grass near the water using Leafage to create the required grass tiles, then place them adjacent to ocean water. Once the habitat is complete, Slowpoke appears and wants to follow you to the Pokemon Center area.
Step 2: Clear the Path for Slowpoke
Slowpoke needs a clear path from the beach to the Pokemon Center. Remove debris, rocks, and obstacles blocking the route using Rock Smash and Cut. Slowpoke can jump up single blocks on its own, so you do not need to build full staircases. If Slowpoke stops moving, talk to it for hints about what is still blocking the way.
Step 3: Increase the Area's Humidity
Once Slowpoke arrives at the Pokemon Center, the goal shifts to making the surrounding area humid enough for Slowpoke to yawn and summon rain. There are several ways to increase humidity:
Create water features: Behind the Pokemon Center, there is a blocked water source. Destroy the stone blocks with Rock Smash to release the water, creating a pond.
Use Water Gun: Spray Water Gun on the dirt and dry ground around the Pokemon Center to add moisture to the area.
Complete Pokemon requests: Bulbasaur and Squirtle both have side quests (yellow speech bubbles) at this point. Completing their requests contributes to raising the humidity further.
Talk to Slowpoke periodically to check how much more humidity is needed. It provides feedback on the current level.
Step 4: Build the Rain Dance Site
After raising humidity enough, Squirtle instructs you to build a Rain Dance Site. Gather the following items and place them together:
Item | How to Obtain |
|---|---|
Castform Weather Charm x2 | Buy one from the PC Shop; find the other inside the cave where Onix is trapped |
Plate x1 | Purchase from the PC Shop or craft at a workbench |
Leppa Berry x1 | Pick from berry bushes throughout the Withered Wasteland |
Arrange these items next to each other in the designated area near the Pokemon Center to complete the Rain Dance Site.
Step 5: Make Slowpoke Yawn
Talk to Slowpoke near the completed Rain Dance Site. With sufficient humidity and the Rain Dance Site in place, Slowpoke lets out a massive yawn, triggering a special cutscene. Rain begins falling across the Withered Wasteland, softening the hard stone blocks that were trapping Onix.
Step 6: Rescue Onix
Return to the cave where Onix is trapped. The rain has softened the previously unbreakable blocks. Use Rock Smash to break through them and free Onix. After being rescued, Onix thanks you and asks for a home.
Step 7: Build Onix's Habitat
Create a Smooth Tall Grass habitat using Smooth Rock and Dry Tall Grass. Once placed, Onix moves in and becomes a permanent member of your community. Onix has the Bulldoze and Crush specialties, which are essential for the next stage of progression.
Rewards
Onix joins your community (Bulldoze and Crush specialties)
Ability to rebuild the Withered Wasteland Pokemon Center (requires Bulldoze)
Unlocks the Team Initiation Challenge Important Request
Slowpoke joins your community (Yawn specialty, reveals area humidity levels)
Tips
Do not waste time trying to break the rocks trapping Onix before triggering rain. They are specifically designed to be unbreakable until the rain softens them.
Stock up on Leppa Berries and food before starting the humidity-raising process. You will be using Water Gun extensively, which drains PP.
Slowpoke's Yawn specialty is useful later in the game for checking humidity levels in other areas. Keep Slowpoke stationed near areas where you want to monitor environmental conditions.
