Berries
Berries are one of the most important consumable resources in Pokemon Pokopia. They serve as the primary method for restoring PP (Power Points), function as ingredients in cooking recipes, can be given as gifts to befriend Pokemon, and play a role in habitat and comfort management. Keeping a large supply of berries on hand is essential throughout the game.
How to Get Berries
Headbutting Berry Trees
The most reliable and consistent way to collect berries is by headbutting berry trees. Walk up to any berry tree and press the A button to shake it with a Headbutt, causing berries to fall to the ground for pickup. Headbutting trees costs zero PP, making it a free action you can perform at any time.
Berry trees are found throughout all five regions. The Withered Wasteland in particular has abundant berry trees, with Leppa Berries available from nearly every tree in the area. Different regions may yield different berry varieties.
Restoring Dried-Out Trees
Some trees in the world appear withered and dried out, producing no berries when headbutted. Using Water Gun (learned from Squirtle) on a dried-out tree revives it, causing it to spring back to life with lush foliage. Restored trees may bear berries that were not previously available in that area, including a chance to produce Leppa Berries.
Always restore dried-out trees when you spot them. Each revived tree becomes a permanent berry source, expanding your foraging network across the map.
Gifts from Pokemon
Befriended Pokemon occasionally approach the player with speech bubbles above their heads. Talking to them when this happens may yield berries, materials, or a new request. Check in with your Pokemon residents regularly for free items.
Other Sources
Daily Challenges: Completing a Daily Challenge at the Pokemon Center Terminal rewards a free Leppa Berry in addition to Life Coins.
Exploration: Berries can be found on the ground in certain areas, especially near habitat zones and along paths.
Dream Islands: Visiting Dream Islands (accessible through Drifloon) sometimes yields rare berry varieties alongside other unique materials.
Berry Uses
PP Restoration
The most critical use of berries is restoring PP. Every move that Ditto uses (Water Gun, Leafage, Cut, Rock Smash, etc.) drains PP from the blue gauge at the bottom-right of the screen. When PP runs out, Ditto enters a fatigue state with reduced movement speed and extremely slow actions.
Eating a berry restores a portion of the PP gauge. The Leppa Berry is the most commonly recommended berry for PP restoration, as it is abundant and provides a solid amount of recovery. In the early game, when food variety is limited, berries and carrots (pulled from the ground) are the only portable PP restoration options available.
Other PP restoration methods exist (the Pokemon Center healing machine, cooked meals, resting in chairs), but berries remain the most convenient option during active exploration and resource gathering because they can be consumed instantly from the inventory without returning to base.
Cooking Ingredient
Berries can be used as ingredients in cooking recipes. When combined with a base ingredient at a cooking station (chopping board, bread oven, frying pan, or cooking pot), berries add flavor and modify the meal's effects. Cooked meals provide full PP restoration plus a temporary move power-up, making them strictly superior to eating raw berries.
For example, adding berries to a salad recipe (chopping board + leaf + berry) powers up the Leafage ability, letting it grow tall grass in a larger area. Different ingredient combinations produce different meal effects.
Gifting and Comfort
Feeding berries to Pokemon is one way to increase their comfort level. Many Pokemon have berry preferences, and offering their favorite type of berry provides a larger comfort boost than generic food. Higher comfort levels contribute to raising the area's Environment Level.
Crafting Component
Some crafting recipes call for berries as a material. The Ditto Flag, for example, requires 1 Sturdy Stick, 1 Twine, and 1 Leppa Berry. The Ditto Flag is a critical early-game item that claims a structure as the player's home and enables the Return Home fast travel option.
Berry Trees
Berry trees are scattered throughout every region. They can be identified by their leafy canopy and visible fruit. Each tree can be headbutted once, after which it takes some time to regrow its berries before it can be harvested again.
Region | Berry Availability |
|---|---|
Withered Wasteland | The most abundant source of Leppa Berries. Nearly every tree in the region yields them. |
Palette Town | Berry trees appear as the area is revitalized. Watering dried trees here can produce varied berry types. |
Bleak Beach | Coastal berry trees with region-specific varieties. |
Rocky Ridges | Fewer trees due to the mountainous terrain, but those present may yield rarer berries. |
Sparkling Skylands | Berry trees on floating islands. Limited in number but may offer premium varieties. |
Tips
Keep a stack of Leppa Berries in your inventory at all times. They are the most accessible PP restoration item and prevent getting stranded with no energy during long exploration trips.
Always use Water Gun on dried-out trees. Revived trees become permanent berry sources and may grow types not found elsewhere in the region.
When berries pile up beyond what you need for PP restoration, use them as cooking ingredients for meals that provide both full PP recovery and move power-ups.
Place Storage Boxes near frequently visited berry tree clusters to dump excess berries without clogging your inventory.
Feed berries to Pokemon that have low comfort to quickly raise their satisfaction and contribute to your area's Environment Level.
