Overview
The player character in Pokemon Pokopia is a Ditto (Pokedex #047, Normal type, Transform specialty). Unlike ordinary Ditto, this one possesses the unique ability to maintain a stable human form indefinitely. After emerging from an old Poke Ball in the Withered Wasteland, it discovers a discarded Pokedex containing a photograph of a Pokemon Trainer alongside a Ditto. Upon seeing the image, Ditto copies the form of the trainer, setting out to restore the desolate world under the guidance of Professor Tangrowth.
Backstory
Not much is known about Ditto's life before the start of Pokemon Pokopia. It appears to have been captured at some point, as it emerges from a Poke Ball at the beginning of the game. Its human form is deliberately modeled after a trainer it cared for. The relationship between Ditto and this lost trainer forms one of the game's emotional through-lines: Ditto chose to mimic the shape of someone it misses, carrying that memory forward as it works to rebuild the world.
Ditto is capable of understanding the speech of all Pokemon. By listening to the wants and needs of the Pokemon on each island, Ditto uses its power of mimicry to create habitats that suit each resident. This emotional intelligence sets it apart from a regular Ditto and drives the entire gameplay loop of building, befriending, and restoring.
Transform Abilities
Ditto's core mechanic in Pokopia revolves around learning moves from befriended Pokemon. Rather than combat attacks, these moves function as environmental tools. Ditto physically transforms parts of its body when using a move: its arms become Squirtle-shaped cannons for Water Gun, its claws extend like Scyther's blades for Cut, and its arms sprout into Bulbasaur's vines for Leafage. Most transformations are partial (only the relevant body parts change while the human form is maintained), but some moves trigger full-body transformations.
Moves are switched using a power wheel similar to a tool ring (comparable to Animal Crossing's power wheel). Each move consumes PP from the blue gauge at the bottom-right of the screen. When PP runs out, Ditto becomes fatigued and must eat food or berries to recover.

Full-Body Transformations
Most moves only alter specific body parts while maintaining Ditto's human appearance. Four moves trigger full-body transformations where Ditto takes on a complete (but comically small) Pokemon form:
Surf (Lapras): Ditto becomes a tiny, adorable version of Lapras that floats across water surfaces.
Rollout (Graveler): Ditto curls into a Graveler shape and rolls at high speed. Difficult to control and easy to accidentally destroy things you want to keep.
Glide (Dragonite): Ditto morphs into a small Dragonite with a goofy face, enabling aerial gliding from any jump point.
Magnet Rise (Magnemite): The final unlock. Ditto becomes a Magnemite shape that can fly vertically and manipulate blocks mid-air, making it invaluable for late-game building.
Skill Upgrades Through Food
Several of Ditto's moves can be temporarily powered up by eating specific cooked meals:
Food Type | Powered Move | Effect |
|---|---|---|
Soup | Water Gun | Increased spray range and coverage |
Bread | Cut | Extended cutting range; chop more at once |
Hamburger Steak | Rock Smash | Temporarily punches through hard materials |
Salad | Leafage | Can create duckweed on water surfaces |
Character Customization
At the start of the game, players choose from 7 base hairstyles and 28 hair color shades for their Ditto's human form. There are also 10 skin tone options. Appearance can be changed at any time by interacting with a mirror, wardrobe, or dressing table, which can be found in the world, crafted, or purchased from the PC Shop. There is no gender lock on any cosmetic option.
Outfits (Human Records)
Ditto can wear outfits found as "Human Records" scattered throughout the game world. Each outfit references a classic Pokemon character or trainer class:
Outfit | Reference | Location |
|---|---|---|
Default Outfit | Standard trainer attire | Game start |
Ninja Outfit | Koga and Janine (Fuchsia City Gym) | Withered Wasteland (Dilapidated Home) |
Sailor Outfit | S.S. Anne crew | Bleak Beach (S.S. Anne) |
Team Rocket Outfit | Team Rocket Grunts | Rocky Ridges (Game Corner area) |
Hiking Outfit | Hiker trainer class | Rocky Ridges |

Human Records also contain lore titles like "The Legendary Ninja Family" and "Gym Leader Monthly" that provide worldbuilding context about the humans who once lived in Pokopia.
Unique Traits
Blob reversion: Ditto can revert to its natural pink blob form to squeeze through tight spaces and access hidden areas. This happens automatically when encountering narrow gaps.
Up to 5 followers: Up to five befriended Pokemon can follow Ditto at once, passively performing their specialties as they travel. Choose followers whose specialties match your current task.
Stockpile: Ditto can hold items in its body using the Stockpile ability, supplementing regular inventory space.
Return Home: Ditto can teleport to its Ditto Flag home at any time via the Pokedex menu. Place the flag strategically near your crafting hub.
Pokemon communication: Ditto can understand all Pokemon speech, which is how it receives quests, learns about preferences, and discovers habitat requirements.
