Overview
Gyarados is a Water/Flying-type Pokemon found in a hidden area beneath Sparkling Skylands. It teaches the Waterfall transformation, an upgrade to Surf that lets Ditto travel up vertical water streams. Gyarados is encountered behind the waterfalls near the Pokemon Center island and must be woken up with a Bread Bowl before it will teach the move.
How to Find Gyarados
Location
Gyarados is hidden below the first island in Sparkling Skylands, behind the waterfalls near the Pokemon Center. After learning Glide from Dragonite, return to the Pokemon Center island and drop down where the waterfalls flow. Enter the water and swim behind the falls to find Gyarados lounging in a pool.
Waking Gyarados
Gyarados is drowsy and needs a hot meal to remember the Waterfall move. When you first speak to it, it says "So sleepy..." and asks for food. The specific item needed is a Bread Bowl, a cooked food recipe that requires Wheat x1, Simple Soup x1, Any x1, plus a Burn-specialty Pokemon at the Bread Oven. After eating the Bread Bowl, Gyarados wakes up fully and teaches Waterfall.
Waterfall Transformation
Waterfall is the 13th Ditto Transformation and functions as an upgrade to Surf rather than a standalone ability. It allows Ditto to travel upward along waterfalls while in Surf mode.
Detail | Info |
|---|---|
Controls | While Surfing (B in water), press A at the base of a waterfall |
Effect | Ditto travels upward along the waterfall |
Requirement | Must already have Surf (learned from Lapras at Bleak Beach) |
Works on | Natural waterfalls and player-created waterfalls |
Waterfall enables vertical navigation in Sparkling Skylands and provides an alternative to Glide for reaching elevated areas. Player-created waterfalls (built using the Suck ability) also support the Waterfall ability, meaning players can build custom elevator-like water routes.
Building the Illuminated Waterfall Habitat
After befriending Gyarados, build the Illuminated Waterfall habitat so it can live on your island:
Material | Quantity | Where to Find |
|---|---|---|
Lit Torch | 2 | Craft at workbench; requires a Burn-specialty Pokemon to light |
Waterfall | 1 | Create using the Suck ability on elevated terrain |
Water | 3 | Any water source |
Stepping Stones | 3 | Found near Gyarados's initial location behind the waterfalls |
Most materials for this habitat can be found right where Gyarados is encountered, behind the waterfalls.
Specialty
Gyarados has the Water specialty, which lets it spray water on nearby fields and plants from a full water source. Place Gyarados's habitat near farming areas and a Water Basin for passive crop watering. It can also increase humidity and clean mud from surfaces.

Tips
Craft a Bread Bowl before heading to Sparkling Skylands. You need it to wake Gyarados, and the recipe requires a Burn-specialty Pokemon and pre-made Soup.
Player-created waterfalls work with the Waterfall ability. Build vertical water routes as shortcuts across your island.
Gyarados's Illuminated Waterfall habitat doubles as a decoration. The lit torches and waterfall create an impressive visual centerpiece.
Combine Waterfall with Glide for maximum vertical mobility in Sparkling Skylands. Glide to descend between islands, Waterfall to climb back up.
