Overview
Mewtwo, the Genetic Pokemon (6'7", 269.0 lbs), is a Legendary Pokemon first encountered during the main story at the rooftop of the rebuilt skyscraper in Sparkling Skylands. The initial encounter is a story event where Mewtwo cannot be recruited. To actually bring Mewtwo to your island, players must re-encounter it on a Dream Island during the post-game. Mewtwo has the Teleport specialty, making it one of the most useful Legendary Pokemon for daily gameplay.
Story Encounter
Prerequisites
The story encounter requires completing the Rebuild the Huge Building Important Request in Sparkling Skylands. This involves reconstructing the former Celadon Department Store floor by floor under the guidance of Tinkmaster. The full requirements across all three construction phases:
Floor | Key Materials |
|---|---|
2nd Floor | |
3rd Floor | 25 Concrete, 10 Glass, 10 Glowing Stone, 15 Copper Ingots |
4th Floor |
The Rooftop Encounter
After completing all three floors, the skyscraper has a functional elevator. Riding it to the rooftop triggers a cutscene: a Master Ball on the ground shakes and releases Mewtwo. Mewtwo speaks about the disappearance of humans from Kanto, sharing mysterious insights about the world's past. After the conversation, Mewtwo departs.
Examining the Master Ball on the rooftop raises the player's Trainer Rank to Master, the highest rank in the game. After the encounter, head out of the building and speak to Professor Tangrowth at the entrance to complete the quest.
Note: Mewtwo cannot be recruited during the story encounter. You must find it again on a Dream Island to bring it to your island.
Recruiting Mewtwo (Dream Island)
Required Doll
To re-encounter and recruit Mewtwo, visit the Sky Dream Island, accessed by using a Dragonite Doll with Drifloon. The Dragonite Doll can be found in Glowing Blocks or obtained through other collectible sources. If you do not have a Dragonite Doll, a Ditto Doll or Substitute Doll can send you to a randomly selected Dream Island, which has a small chance of being the Sky Dream Island.
Finding Mewtwo on the Dream Island
Navigate to the mountain's base on the Sky Dream Island and locate a cave entrance. The cave interior resembles a Gym-like structure. Mewtwo waits inside an inner cavern. Look for enclosed rooms that have walls made of different materials compared to their surroundings, which is a telltale sign of a Legendary encounter chamber.
The encounter is not guaranteed on every visit. If Mewtwo is not present, return the next day or adjust your system clock to reset the Dream Island. You can only bring Drifloon one Doll per day.
Befriending Mewtwo
When Mewtwo is present, speak to it and select "Certainly" when offered the choice to help. Return to Drifloon with Mewtwo to bring it back to your island. Once on your island, designate a habitat location for Mewtwo and confirm placement. Mewtwo boosts your island's Environment Level, so placing it strategically can help with progression.
Specialty
Mewtwo has the Teleport specialty, which instantly transports the player to any located Pokemon on the island. This works alongside the Search function from Pokemon with the Search or Fly specialty (like Pidgey or Pidgeotto). Instead of walking to a Pokemon's location, Mewtwo warps you there instantly, saving significant travel time. This makes Mewtwo one of the most useful Legendary Pokemon for daily island management.
Habitat Preferences
After recruiting Mewtwo, assign it to an empty house and decorate to boost its Comfort Level. Mewtwo prefers a dark environment.

Tips
Complete the main story before attempting to recruit Mewtwo. The story encounter is a prerequisite for the Dream Island encounter.
Stock up on Dragonite Dolls if you plan to farm the Sky Dream Island. Multiple visits may be needed before Mewtwo appears.
Mewtwo's Teleport specialty pairs well with Search-specialty Pokemon. Have both on your island for instant Pokemon location and travel.
Decorate Mewtwo's habitat with dark-themed, strange, and stone items to maximize its Comfort Level.
The Master Ball found during the story encounter is a unique item. It remains on the rooftop as an interactable object.
Mewtwo boosts your Environment Level when placed on your island. Consider placing it in an area where you need an Environment Level boost.
