Diaries and Journaling
Diaries and journaling in inZOI take several forms, from AI-generated daily reflections written by your Zoi at the end of each day to physical journal-writing interactions that build skills. The diary system is tightly connected to the Memory System and the Smart Zoi AI, creating a feedback loop where a Zoi's written reflections actually influence their behavior the following day. This article covers every type of diary and journaling activity currently in the game, along with upcoming features on the 2026 roadmap.
Smart Zoi Diary
The primary diary feature in inZOI is part of the Smart Zoi system. When Smart Zoi is enabled, your Zoi will automatically write a diary entry at the end of each day. This is not a player-initiated action; it happens on its own when two conditions are met:
The in-game time is past 11 PM.
The Zoi is sufficiently tired and ready for bed.
Once both conditions are satisfied, the Zoi sits down and writes. The resulting diary entry is a comprehensive reflection on the day's events, written from the Zoi's perspective. It combines their Inner Thoughts (the moment-to-moment reactions they had throughout the day) with a summary of significant things that happened: social interactions, career events, skill progress, emotional highs and lows, and anything else the AI deemed noteworthy.
The diary is not just a record. After writing it, the Smart Zoi AI uses the entry's content to generate a schedule for the following day. Discoveries and realizations that emerge during the writing process are factored into what the Zoi decides to do next. For example, if a Zoi reflects on a particularly good conversation with a neighbor, they might schedule time to visit that neighbor again. If they recall a stressful day at work, they might prioritize relaxation activities.
Requirements
The Smart Zoi diary feature has specific hardware and settings requirements:
Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
Smart Zoi Setting | Must be enabled in Gameplay Settings under the Options menu. |
GPU | Requires an NVIDIA graphics card. The AI runs on-device using the NVIDIA ACE engine. Minimum: RTX 3060 with 8 GB VRAM. Recommended: RTX 4070 Super or RTX 5070 with 12 GB VRAM. |
Game Speed | Diary writing, Inner Thoughts, and schedule generation are disabled at 5x game speed or higher. |
Zoi Type | Only human Zois write diaries. Pets and other non-human characters do not. |
City Limit | A maximum of 300 Smart Zois can operate per city. |
Known Limitations
Multiple Zois writing diaries simultaneously (after 11 PM) can cause performance lag, especially with five or more Zois on screen.
If a Zoi stays up too late and misses the diary-writing window, they may skip the entry entirely and start the next day without an AI-generated schedule.
New schedules can fail to generate if the Zoi sleeps at an irregular time.
Inner Thoughts
Inner Thoughts are the moment-to-moment reflections that Smart Zois produce throughout the day. These are separate from the diary but feed directly into it. When a Zoi performs an action, talks to someone, listens to music, reads a book, or experiences something emotional, the AI generates a brief internal monologue.
Players can view Inner Thoughts by clicking the Inner Thoughts button above the Zoi's character model. The thought appears as a text bubble showing what the Zoi is currently thinking. These thoughts can reveal hidden feelings, opinions about other Zois, reactions to their environment, and more.
Inner Thoughts were introduced in v0.3.0 and received updates in v0.5.0 that improved the timing and visibility of thought bubbles. One common issue players report is that Inner Thoughts can disappear very quickly during conversations with other Zois, making them hard to read. If a Zoi has nothing notable on their mind, the display shows "This Zoi doesn't have anything on their mind right now."
The Zoi Pen
The Zoi Pen is a tool that lets players directly influence their Zoi's thoughts and, by extension, their diary content and future behavior. Think of it as planting an idea in your Zoi's mind. You provide a text prompt, and the Smart Zoi AI incorporates it into the Zoi's Inner Thoughts, diary reflections, and scheduling decisions.
To use the Zoi Pen, click the pencil button near the Zoi's portrait. A pop-up window appears where you can type your input. The maximum input is 100 words, though the developers recommend keeping it to around 20 words for best results. The input should be thematic or abstract rather than direct action commands. For example, writing "feeling homesick and missing old friends" is more effective than "go visit John."
The Zoi Pen currently supports English only. It opens up significant roleplay possibilities. Players have used it to prompt entire backstories for their Zois, creating families with complex histories and evolving narratives that the AI then carries forward through diary entries and behavioral changes.
Physical Diary Writing
Separate from the Smart Zoi diary, there is a standard gameplay interaction where Zois physically write in a journal. This does not require the Smart Zoi feature to be enabled and works on any hardware.
How It Works
A Zoi can get an urge to "write down today's thoughts in the diary." To satisfy this urge, the Zoi needs access to a bookshelf. Interact with the bookshelf and select "Write Something." The Zoi will then find a nearby empty desk or table (one without a computer on it) and sit down to write. A dining table works as a substitute if no dedicated desk is available.
The interaction requires sufficient open space near both the bookshelf and the writing surface. If furniture or fallen objects block the path, the Zoi may pick up the diary briefly, then set it back down without completing the interaction.
Troubleshooting
If the Zoi picks up the diary but sets it down immediately, check for hidden objects under nearby furniture that might be blocking the interaction.
Ensure the desk or table does not have a computer placed on it. The Zoi needs a clear writing surface.
Make sure there is enough walking space between the bookshelf and the desk.
Child Journaling and the Responsibility Skill
For child-aged Zois, writing in a journal is one of the activities that builds the Responsibility skill. Responsibility is a child-exclusive skill that involves planning and carrying out self-directed tasks. Journaling teaches the child Zoi to reflect on their day and develop organizational habits.
When a child Zoi ages up to a teenager, their Responsibility skill level influences the starting level of related adult skills. Building Responsibility through journaling early on gives the Zoi a head start in career and life management skills later.
Adult Writing and Critical Thinking
For adult Zois, writing on a computer (rather than in a physical diary) builds the Critical Thinking skill. Higher Critical Thinking levels unlock the ability to write books across multiple genres and sell manuscripts online for Meow. While this is distinct from diary writing, it represents the adult progression of the journaling mechanic.
Plant Observation Journal
inZOI includes a Plant Observation Journal tied to gardening and naturalist activities. This journal is part of the Newbie Naturalist quest line. The first task, "Field Journaling," requires the player to find plants in the world and add entries to the journal, recording details like the date and location of each observation.
The Plant Observation Journal is a focused, activity-specific journal rather than a general diary. It tracks botanical discoveries and encourages players to explore different areas of the map to find new plant species.
Memory Journal
The game maintains an underlying Memory Journal that records significant life events for each Zoi. Both the Zoi performing an action and any affected Zois can receive separate memory entries from the same event. For example, when a parent feeds a toddler, both the parent and the toddler record their own version of the experience.
Memory entries are tied to emotional context. A positive interaction generates a warm memory, while a traumatic event creates a negative one. Over time, these accumulated memories shape a Zoi's behavioral patterns through the Memory System. Trauma memories can restrict certain behaviors (a Zoi who experienced a kitchen fire may develop anxiety around stoves), while positive memories encourage repeating enjoyable activities.
Smartphone Diary App
The smartphone interface includes a Diary app icon, but as of early 2026 this app is not yet functional. It is visible on the phone's home screen but cannot be opened or interacted with. The developers have confirmed that a full Diary app is planned.
According to the 2026 roadmap, the diary feature is being developed in phases:
Timeline | Feature |
|---|---|
Q1 2026 | Memory system expansion with trauma memories and life milestone memories. Formalizes how the game tracks and stores significant life events. |
Q3 2026 | Event Memory and Diary system. A full diary feature where Zois record experiences with emotional context, expanding beyond the current Smart Zoi diary to a more comprehensive journaling system. |
The December 2025 v0.5.0 update laid the groundwork by replacing the placeholder recording system with a proper event memory log. The upcoming expansions will build on this foundation.
Tips
If you want your Zoi to write a diary entry every night, keep their schedule consistent so they are tired and home by 11 PM.
Use the Zoi Pen to steer diary content toward specific themes. Even a short prompt like "thinking about changing careers" can produce an interesting diary reflection and shift the next day's schedule.
For children, pair journaling with other Responsibility-building activities like cleaning to level the skill faster.
Place a bookshelf and an empty desk in the same room to make the physical diary-writing interaction reliable.
Read Inner Thoughts throughout the day to get a preview of what might end up in the evening diary.
Avoid running the game at 5x speed if you want the diary system to function. Switch to a lower speed setting before 11 PM.
