Overview
Every Zoi receives a single trait during Character Creation. Once chosen, the trait is permanent and cannot be changed. That one trait defines the core of the Zoi's personality: how they behave when left on autonomy, which emotions they lean toward, how quickly their needs gauges deplete, what Urges they experience, and how they build relationships with other Zois.
The trait system is grounded in the Enneagram of Personality framework. Each of the nine Enneagram types is represented by a category containing two traits, for a total of 18 traits. The two traits within each category share a thematic foundation (keywords, broad personality tendencies) but express it differently in practice. Think of them as two sides of the same coin: one might be extroverted and socially driven while the other is introspective and independent. Some trait combinations between Zois create natural chemistry and help relationships develop faster, while others produce friction that makes bonding more difficult.
Starting Values
Traits also set four starting Values for the Zoi. Values are personality metrics that range from 0 to 100 and develop through gameplay. Once a Value reaches 60 or more points, it begins influencing the Zoi's wants, choices, and available interactions. The four Values tied to a trait give that Zoi a head start in those areas, shaping their moral outlook and long-term behavior.
How Traits Affect Gameplay
Traits touch almost every system in inZOI. The table below summarizes the five main areas where a trait makes a difference.

Area | How It Works |
|---|---|
Need Decay | Each trait modifies how fast or slow specific need gauges deplete. For example, an Adventurer's Energy gauge drains slowly (letting them stay active longer), while an Entertainer's Social gauge depletes quickly (pushing them to seek out conversation). Some traits have no confirmed gauge modifier at all. |
Emotional Tendencies | Every trait has a "frequently felt" emotion that appears more often than normal. Traits also extend or shorten the duration of certain emotions. A Scholar frequently feels Concentrated, while the Amused emotion fades faster for them. These emotional patterns affect skill growth, social interactions, and autonomous behavior. |
Urges and Autonomy | Traits drive what Urges a Zoi generates. Urges are spontaneous desires tied to personality. A Perfectionist may get urges to clean, while a Visionary gets urges to create art. Aligning a trait with the Zoi's Desired Life ensures their Urges help progress toward life goals. |
Social Behavior | Some traits make a Zoi avoid conversation (Explorer, Go-Getter, Individualist, Visionary). Others make them seek it out (Entertainer, Charmer, Socialite, Volunteer). This affects how easily they form bonds and which relationship types they build. |
Skill Preferences | Traits do not directly boost skills, but the Urges and emotional tendencies tied to a trait push Zois toward specific activities that level certain skills over time. An Adventurer's frequent Excited emotion boosts Cooking skill growth, for instance. |

The two traits in a category share a set of keywords and a thematic foundation, but they differ in their specific gauge effects, emotional tendencies, social behaviors, and Values. The table below shows the full category mapping.
Category | Enneagram Type | Trait A | Trait B |
|---|---|---|---|
Jovial and Cheerful | Type 7 (Enthusiast) | ||

Kind and Generous | Type 2 (Helper) | ||
Diligent and Prudent | Type 6 (Loyalist) | ||
Calm and Tranquil | Type 9 (Peacemaker) | ||
Wise and Logical | Type 5 (Investigator) | ||
Competent and Ambitious | Type 3 (Achiever) | ||
Unique and Creative | Type 4 (Individualist) | ||
Meticulous and Thorough | Type 1 (Reformer) |
Jovial and Cheerful (Adventurer and Entertainer)
Keywords: Free-Spirited, Cheerful, Extroverted, Passionate, Confident, Dominant.
This pair corresponds to Enneagram Type 7 (The Enthusiast). Both traits produce outgoing, energetic Zois who enjoy new experiences and social interaction. The difference lies in focus: the Adventurer channels that energy toward personal challenges and goal-driven activities, while the Entertainer directs it toward social connections and creating a lively atmosphere.
Adventurer Zois possess a strong drive for accomplishment. They get excited easily and maintain their Energy gauge longer than any other trait (Energy decreases slowly). However, Boredom lingers when it hits, so keeping them engaged with varied activities is important. Their Values lean toward Challenger, Accomplishment, Pleasure, and Authority. Adventurers are more interested in activities than deep relationships, though they enjoy conversation.
Entertainer Zois are highly optimistic and love to embrace new experiences. They have a great sense of humor and are skilled at forming relationships. Their Social gauge depletes quickly, pushing them to seek out conversation frequently. The Amused emotion appears often, but their Concentrated emotion fades faster, meaning they struggle to focus on a single task for extended periods. Their Values include Safety, Challenger, Autonomy, and Pleasure.
Honest and Bold (Authoritarian and Leader)
Keywords: Confident, Daring, Dominant, Independent.
This pair maps to Enneagram Type 8 (The Challenger). Both traits produce bold, confident Zois who naturally gravitate toward leadership. They enjoy business discussions and tend to build professional connections more easily than emotional ones.
Authoritarian Zois prioritize power and dominance. They are assertive, dislike being criticized, and have a charismatic leadership style driven by conviction. They frequently feel Annoyed, and the Sentimental emotion fades shorter than normal. Their Values include Accomplishment, Autonomy, Pleasure, and Authority. On the social side, they enjoy conversation and business talk but can struggle with non-professional relationships.
Leader Zois are strong and confident but more measured than the Authoritarian. They listen to others while defending their own views, exhibiting strategic leadership. They frequently feel Confident, though the Annoyed emotion lingers longer when it does appear. Leaders build family relationships easily and enjoy business discussions. Their Values include Safety, Rule-Abiding, Autonomy, and Authority. They are protective and kind toward those close to them but can snap when angered.
Kind and Generous (Charmer and Volunteer)
Keywords: Kind, Big-Hearted, Sociable, Empathetic.
This pair corresponds to Enneagram Type 2 (The Helper). Both traits produce empathetic, relationship-focused Zois. The Charmer channels that warmth primarily into romantic connections, while the Volunteer spreads it broadly through selfless acts and community building.
Charmer Zois are cheerful, friendly, and make friends easily. They are fixated on relationships and build romantic relationships faster than any other trait. They frequently feel Aflutter, but the Sad emotion persists longer when it occurs. Charmers can become anxious and possessive when fearing the loss of love. Their Values include Coexistence, Challenger, Authority, and Love.
Volunteer Zois are intuitive and great at reading the emotions of others. Their Recognition gauge depletes slowly, meaning they need less external validation. They frequently feel Sentimental, and the Confident emotion fades faster. Volunteers like to be positive influences but prefer to do so quietly. Their focus on helping others can lead them to neglect their own needs. Values include Coexistence, Challenger, Authority, and Love.
Diligent and Prudent (Collaborator and Sentinel)
Keywords: Safety-Oriented, Diligent, Faithful, Prudent.
This pair maps to Enneagram Type 6 (The Loyalist). Both traits produce reliable, loyal Zois who value security and strong bonds. The Collaborator expresses loyalty through teamwork and group belonging, while the Sentinel expresses it through protectiveness and routine.
Collaborator Zois are trustworthy and reliable, making them dedicated partners and loyal friends. They stay calm in tense situations and are well equipped to find solutions. However, they struggle to make decisions alone and prefer to work in groups. They frequently feel Tranquil, but the Worried emotion lingers when it occurs. Collaborators build friendships and family relationships easily. Their Values include Coexistence, Safety, Pleasure, and Love.
Sentinel Zois prioritize safety and stability above all else. They avoid unexpected situations with a strong sense of caution and responsibility. Their Fun gauge depletes slowly, meaning they stay content with routine activities longer than other Zois. They frequently feel Worried, but the Bored emotion fades faster than normal. Sentinels are highly loyal and build long-lasting family relationships, though they tend to suppress their emotions. Their Values include Safety, Challenger, Rule-Abiding, and Traditionalist.
Calm and Tranquil (Dreamer and Mediator)
Keywords: Easygoing, Affable, Indecisive, Composed.
This pair corresponds to Enneagram Type 9 (The Peacemaker). Both traits produce peaceful, conflict-averse Zois who value harmony. The Dreamer expresses this through passive contentment, while the Mediator actively works to maintain harmony and smooth relationships.
Dreamer Zois value peace above all and hate anything that disrupts their harmonious lives. They are kind to others but their passive personality hinders actively pursuing goals. Their Sleep gauge depletes quickly, so they need rest more frequently. They frequently feel Lethargic, and the Tranquil emotion lasts longer when it appears. Dreamers have a philosophical nature and can sometimes feel superior to others. Their Values include Coexistence, Safety, Rule-Abiding, and Traditionalist.
Mediator Zois balance strength and gentleness. They prioritize peace and harmony first, excelling at negotiation and conflict resolution. However, they often procrastinate and lack focus on achieving goals. Their Energy gauge depletes quickly, and they frequently feel Tranquil while the Excited emotion fades faster. The key advantage of the Mediator is social versatility: they build relationships with anyone easily, across all relationship types. Their Values include Rule-Abiding, Traditionalist, Authority, and Love.
Wise and Logical (Explorer and Scholar)
Keywords: Smart, Analytical, Curious, Critical.
This pair maps to Enneagram Type 5 (The Investigator). Both traits produce knowledge-seeking, analytical Zois. The Explorer is driven by curiosity about the unknown and imaginative pursuits, while the Scholar focuses on structured learning and practical knowledge.
Explorer Zois are curious about the world and are quick learners keen to expand their knowledge. They enjoy research and coming up with new ideas, and their fascination with fantasy can cause them to get lost in their imagination. They frequently feel Curious, and the Aflutter emotion fades shorter than normal. Explorers avoid conversation and struggle to form social connections. Their Values include Coexistence, Safety, Challenger, and Autonomy.
Scholar Zois pursue exceptional knowledge and skills, with interest in theory, technology, and detailed exploration. Their Sleep gauge depletes slowly, which is one of the strongest passive bonuses in the game since it allows longer productive sessions before rest is needed. They frequently feel Concentrated, while the Amused emotion fades faster. Scholars prefer objects and books to people but are still equipped to collaborate when needed. Their Values include Coexistence, Safety, Challenger, and Rule-Abiding.
Competent and Ambitious (Go-Getter and Socialite)
Keywords: Efficient, Ambitious, Driven, Competent.
This pair corresponds to Enneagram Type 3 (The Achiever). Both traits produce success-oriented Zois who pursue achievement. The Go-Getter chases career milestones and professional recognition, while the Socialite pursues social status and the perception of success.
Go-Getter Zois are very driven for success, with an ambitious nature that makes them extremely goal-oriented. Their Recognition gauge depletes quickly, meaning they constantly crave professional validation. They frequently feel Confident, but the Nervous emotion lingers longer when it occurs. Go-Getters focus on career over personal life, which can lead to neglecting others' feelings. They avoid casual conversation but build business relationships easily. Their Values include Accomplishment, Autonomy, Traditionalist, and Authority.
Socialite Zois have outstanding social skills and make great impressions on others. They pursue social recognition and enjoy being the center of attention. They frequently feel Excited, and the Lethargic emotion lingers longer. Socialites are proud of being social butterflies and, as a result, are very conscious of what others think of them. They build all relationship types easily, making them one of the most socially versatile traits. Their Values include Accomplishment, Pleasure, Authority, and Love.
Unique and Creative (Individualist and Visionary)
Keywords: Introverted, Innovative, Sensitive, Creative.
This pair maps to Enneagram Type 4 (The Individualist). Both traits produce creative, sensitive Zois who value self-expression. The Individualist channels that creativity inward through independence and personal reflection, while the Visionary channels it outward through artistic expression and emotional depth.
Individualist Zois are highly independent and focus on their own thoughts and feelings more than social perceptions. Their Social gauge depletes slowly, meaning they are comfortable spending long periods alone without feeling lonely. They frequently feel Uncomfortable, and the Curious emotion lasts longer. Individualists have a keen interest in social sciences and can be creative, but they appear reclusive and dislike conversation. Their Values include Challenger, Accomplishment, Autonomy, and Pleasure.
Visionary Zois possess exceptional artistic talent and express emotions well. They like to feel special and take great pride in their appearance. They frequently feel Sad, and the Sentimental emotion lingers longer. Visionaries are very self-aware but can become emotionally volatile. They avoid conversation and prefer creative solitude. Their Values include Coexistence, Accomplishment, Autonomy, and Love.
Meticulous and Thorough (Perfectionist and Social Activist)
Keywords: Rational, Responsible, Methodical, Principled.
This pair corresponds to Enneagram Type 1 (The Reformer). Both traits produce disciplined, principled Zois who hold themselves to high standards. The Perfectionist directs that discipline inward toward personal routines and flawless execution, while the Social Activist directs it outward toward improving society and setting an example.
Perfectionist Zois set extremely high standards for themselves and others. They aim to ensure everything is done flawlessly and are meticulous planners. Their Hygiene gauge depletes quickly, meaning they need to clean and bathe more frequently. They frequently feel Nervous, and the Surprised emotion fades shorter than normal. Perfectionists rarely show emotions, which can make them appear aloof. They make rational decisions and have a strong sense of justice. Their Values include Coexistence, Rule-Abiding, Accomplishment, and Traditionalist.
Social Activist Behavior
Social Activist Zois live by very high standards and have a strong sense of responsibility toward improving society. They are keen rule followers and aim to be an example that others look up to. They frequently feel Concentrated, and the Uncomfortable emotion lingers longer. Social Activists are interested in social issues and do not back down from challenges. They enjoy business discussions and build business relationships easily. Their Values include Coexistence, Challenger, Authority, and Love.
Gauge Effects by Trait
Different traits modify how quickly specific need gauges deplete. Some traits also cause certain emotions to last longer or shorter than normal. Understanding these effects helps when planning which activities to prioritize for each Zoi. Relationship Building by Trait
Some traits make it easier to build specific types of relationships. This affects how quickly a Zoi forms bonds and what kinds of social interactions come naturally. Zois with traits that build a particular relationship type will gain relationship points faster for that type.
Relationship Type | Traits That Build It Easily |
|---|---|
Romantic | |
Family | |
Business | |
Friendships | |
All Types | |
General Socializing |
Traits that avoid conversation (Explorer, Go-Getter, Individualist, Visionary) will have a harder time building any type of relationship. Traits that dislike or are neutral about conversation (Scholar, Sentinel, Dreamer, Perfectionist) can still form bonds but at a slower pace than outgoing traits.
Trait and Desired Life Pairings
Aligning a Zoi's trait with their Desired Life ensures their Urges naturally support progress toward life goals. Each Desired Life has two recommended traits whose Values and behaviors complement the life path. You can pick any trait with any Desired Life, but choosing a recommended pairing makes gameplay smoother because the Zoi's autonomous behavior will work toward their goals rather than against them.

Tips for Choosing Traits
Since traits are permanent, choosing the right one matters. Here are practical considerations to help you decide.
Consider gauge effects first. Traits that slow down gauge decay give a significant quality-of-life advantage. The Scholar's slow Sleep decay and the Adventurer's slow Energy decay are widely considered two of the strongest passive bonuses, because they let your Zoi stay productive longer before needing rest.
Match your trait to your Desired Life. Aligning the trait with the Zoi's Desired Life ensures their autonomous Urges work toward life goals rather than pulling in random directions. See the pairing table above for recommended combinations.
Think about social goals. If you plan to focus on romance, Charmer is the clear choice. For building a large family, Leader, Sentinel, or Collaborator work well. For a solo Zoi who avoids relationships, Individualist is ideal since the slow Social decay means they rarely feel lonely.
Plan for career focus. Career-driven playthroughs benefit from Go-Getter (builds business relationships easily, frequently Confident) or Scholar (slow Sleep decay means longer work sessions, frequently Concentrated). Pair with Life of Abundance or Life of Respectability.
Account for emotional downsides. Every trait has a negative emotional tendency. Adventurer's extended Boredom, Go-Getter's lingering Nervousness, and Charmer's extended Sadness can slow gameplay if not managed. Keep activities varied to counter negative emotions.
Versatile all-rounders. If you are unsure, Mediator and Socialite build all relationship types easily, making them safe picks for any playstyle. Scholar is also a safe bet due to its strong Sleep bonus and minimal social drawbacks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change my Zoi's trait after creation?
No. Traits are locked in during Character Creation and cannot be modified afterward. Make sure you are satisfied with your choice before finalizing your household.
Do traits affect skill growth directly?
Traits do not provide direct skill multipliers. However, the emotional tendencies and Urges they generate push Zois toward specific activities that level certain skills over time. For example, the Adventurer's frequent Excited emotion boosts Cooking skill growth speed.
Household Trait Combinations
Can two Zois with the same trait live together?
Yes. There is no restriction on trait combinations within a household. Two Zois with the same trait will share similar behaviors and emotional tendencies, which can make managing needs predictable.
What are the best traits overall?
Scholar, Adventurer, and Charmer are frequently recommended. Scholar's slow Sleep decay is widely considered the strongest passive bonus. Adventurer's slow Energy decay is similarly powerful. Charmer excels in romantic playthroughs. However, the "best" trait depends entirely on your playstyle and goals.
Do traits affect which careers are available?
No. All careers are available regardless of trait. However, certain traits generate Urges and emotional tendencies that naturally complement specific careers. A Go-Getter's business focus fits corporate careers, while a Visionary's creative urges align with artistic professions.
