Side Quests
Complete guide to side quests in Starsand Island. Covers the five profession quest chains, NPC Heart Stories, Bulletin Board requests, tourist quests, Island Life progression, lost item returns, and how side content feeds into affection, Starsand Points, and overall progression.
Side Quests
Side quests in Starsand Island range from multi-step profession chains that span dozens of hours to one-off delivery requests that take a few minutes. The game does not have a single quest log that separates "main" from "side" content; instead, several overlapping systems provide objectives: profession certification trials, NPC Heart Stories, Bulletin Board requests, Island Life milestones, tourist encounters, and lost item returns. Together, they make up the bulk of the game's structured content outside of open-ended farming and crafting.
Profession Quest Chains
The five professions (Crafter, Farmer, Angler, Rancher, Explorer) each have their own multi-step quest chain that takes you from Apprentice to Expert. These are the closest thing Starsand Island has to a traditional main story, and completing them is the primary way to unlock new tools, machines, recipes, and gameplay mechanics.
Profession | Mentor | Apprentice Trial Summary | What the Chain Unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
Craft a Skateboard using basic materials | All tools, machines, vehicles, and automation systems. Must be completed first before any other profession can start. | ||
Grow and harvest wheat, craft flour | Sprinklers, Greenhouse, Grinder, Eternal Blessing skill, artisan machines (Jam Maker, Brewing Barrel, Pickling Jar) | ||
Catch 10 fish and deliver 3 to Delphin | Fishing rods (7+ tiers), boat access, deep-sea fishing zones, Fish Pond, fish breeding, Aquarium | ||
Build a Rabbit Hutch and deliver Flannel | All livestock species, Breeding House, mounts, Selective Breeding Ranch, Auto Milker, Electric Shearer | ||
Craft a Slingshot, enter Moonlit Forest, defeat a Runebird | Combat weapons, special arrows (Water, Fire, Bomb), boss fights, Moonlit Meadow access, Enchanted Crossbow |
Each profession has five certification tiers: Apprentice, Junior, Intermediate, Senior, and Expert. To advance, you complete a trial quest given by your mentor NPC, then visit Solara at the Community Center to claim a recruitment bonus. Each new tier unlocks additional blueprints at the mentor's shop and new skills in the Workpedia.
The Crafter profession must be started first. After reaching Apprentice Crafter, the remaining four professions can be pursued in any order. The community-recommended progression order is: Crafter, Explorer, Farmer, Angler, Rancher. See the Professions article for detailed walkthroughs of each quest chain.
Profession quest rewards include +50 Affection Points with the mentor NPC, making profession progression one of the most efficient ways to build friendships with Zerine, Graminova, Delphin, Pastelle, and Zephyria.
NPC Heart Stories
Every NPC on the island has personal Heart Stories that unlock as your friendship level with them increases. Heart Stories are narrative arcs centered on the character's personal life, covering their dreams, regrets, conflicts, and how they grow alongside you.
Heart Stories play out through a mix of dialogue changes, slice-of-life side quests, and interactive events. Rather than isolated cutscenes, they blend with daily interactions. An NPC might mention a problem during casual conversation, then ask for your help the next day, then resolve the situation over several more encounters. Some Heart Stories feature branching choices that affect the outcome.
Beyond dialogue, Heart Stories include interactive social activities unique to each character's personality. Confirmed interactions include joining a fortune teller's readings, going on bike rides together, having sleepovers, and binge-watching television. These are not generic events; they reflect each NPC's specific interests and background.
Each heart level unlocks new story chapters. Since non-romanceable NPCs cap at 4 Hearts and romanceable NPCs go to 5, romanceable characters have the most developed story arcs. Heart Stories are being expanded during Early Access, with additional content planned for future updates.
Bulletin Board Requests
The Bulletin Board at the Community Center provides the most consistent source of daily side quests. It refreshes every morning at 6:00 AM with up to four NPC requests. Each request is a timed delivery quest: gather or craft a specific item and bring it to the NPC who posted it.
Requests come in three difficulty tiers (1-star, 2-star, 3-star) with escalating rewards. Completing requests earns Coins, Starsand Points, and Affection Points with the requesting NPC. The board also tracks your total completions and awards milestone bonuses at certain thresholds.
At 4 Hearts with an NPC, a unique mechanic unlocks: that NPC starts posting requests on the Bulletin Board specifically for you. These character-specific requests provide unique reward items tied to the NPC's role. For example, Zephyria may offer adventure-related materials from the Moonlit Forest, while Delphin provides fishing supplies.
Island Life Progression
The Island Life app on your phone provides a sequential series of rank-based quest lines that function as a guided side quest track. Each rank stage has specific objectives (place furniture, earn a profession certification, complete Community Center requests) and rewards substantial amounts of Starsand Points.
Island Life ranks progress through: Returning Resident, Aspiring Islander, Budding Resident, Active Citizen, Skillful Star, Island Pro, Home Builder, Bright Star, and Starsand Legend. Completing ranks is how you unlock major features like land ownership, the bus system, and farm expansion at additional locations.
Tourist Side Quests
Randomly spawning tourist NPCs appear at various spots around the island. They wear distinctively colorful clothing and offer small one-off quests, usually photo requests or simple deliveries. Tourist quests reward Starsand Points along with items like fish bait, flower seeds, and crafting materials.
Some regular islanders also have photo-related side quests. Momo, for example, has a series of photography tasks that contribute to the Daily Moments category in the StarNote app. These are not daily repeatable but add variety to the quest pool.
Lost Item Returns
As you explore the island, you occasionally find lost items on the ground. These belong to specific NPCs, and returning the item to its owner rewards +20 Affection Points. Lost items appear randomly and are not tied to any quest log; just pick them up when you spot them and deliver them to the right person.
While not a major quest system, lost item returns are a nice free source of Affection that you should never pass up. They combine well with your daily NPC conversation and gifting rounds.
Photo Album Quests
The Scenery Album system rewards you for photographing specific landmarks and points of interest around the island. Confirmed photo targets include Serena's Store, Zerine's General Store, Half-Moon Bay Pier, Aureleaf Kitchen, and Windflute Island Pier. Each new photo entry earns 20 Starsand Points, and collection milestones award bonus rewards.

Tips
Do the Bulletin Board every single day. It is the most consistent daily source of Coins, Starsand, and Affection. Build the personal Request Bulletin on your property to save the trip to the Community Center.
Crafter first, always. The Crafter profession must be completed to Apprentice level before anything else unlocks. Rush this quest chain before starting any other activities.
Profession quests are the best AP source. At +50 Affection per quest, profession trials build friendships with mentors faster than any other method. Prioritize these if you are trying to reach higher heart levels with profession NPCs.
Track Island Life objectives. The Island Life app essentially guides you toward your next overarching goal. Completing ranks unlocks major features and awards the largest Starsand payouts in the game.
Talk to colorful strangers. Tourist NPCs have distinctively bright clothing. When you spot one, talk to them. Even if they do not have a quest, they sometimes hand you a free item.
Pick up every lost item you see. +20 Affection for free, no strings attached. Lost items are easy to miss on the ground, so keep an eye out during exploration.
Check quest tracking on your HUD. Your currently tracked quest and its objectives display below the minimap. You can change the tracked quest through the Journal or menu system.
