Runebird
Complete guide to the Runebird elite enemy in Starsand Island. Covers the Gate of Life encounter in the Moonlit Forest, the three attack patterns (swooping dive, ranged projectiles, ground-slam shockwave), weak point targeting, Slingshot combat strategy, drops, and progression after the fight.
Runebird
The Runebird is an elite flying enemy found in the Moonlit Forest, specifically at the Gate of Life clearing. It serves as the first real combat challenge players face after entering the forest and plays a big role in the Apprentice Explorer trial for the Explorer profession. While not classified as a full boss like the Crystalith or Glintortle, the Runebird is a dangerous opponent that can catch unprepared players off guard with its varied attack patterns.
Location and Encounter
The Runebird is found in the Gate of Life clearing, located within the Evernight Forest section of the Moonlit Forest. This is one of the earliest areas players reach after entering the forest through the Damaged Door near the player's home.
To reach the Runebird, players must navigate through the initial dark corridors of the Evernight Forest and locate the Gravestar puzzle at the gate. Solving the puzzle requires collecting three Gravestars by smashing orange glowing Gravecrystal rocks with a pickaxe. Once all three Gravestars are placed, the gate unseals and the path to the Runebird opens up.
Multiple Runebirds can be found throughout the Moonlit Forest beyond this initial encounter. However, the Gate of Life fight is the most significant because it blocks progression toward Dreamfall Garden and the rest of the forest.
Attack Patterns
The Runebird uses a mix of aerial and ground-based attacks that require players to stay mobile at all times.
Attack | Description | Counter |
|---|---|---|
Swooping Dive | Descends rapidly from the air toward the player's position, dealing damage on contact. Most frequent attack. | Strafe to the side at the last moment |
Ranged Projectiles | Fires projectiles at the player while airborne. Projectiles travel in a straight line. | Sidestep while maintaining slingshot aim |
Ground-Slam Shockwave | Lands with a slam that sends a shockwave outward from the landing point. | Jump over the shockwave or sprint away before landing |
The Runebird's bright yellow stomach is its weak point. Slingshot pellets that hit this area deal increased damage, making it worthwhile to aim carefully rather than firing rapidly.
Combat Strategy
The Slingshot is the only effective weapon against the Runebird at this stage of the game. Players should equip Simple Pellets or Blast Pellets before entering the fight.
Tip | Details |
|---|---|
Recommended Weapon | Slingshot with Simple Pellets or Blast Pellets |
Ammo Needed | Approximately 5 to 8 pellets depending on accuracy |
Weak Point | Bright yellow stomach area (increased damage) |
Movement | Circle strafe constantly; sprint (hold Shift) to create distance |
Healing Item | Lamb Skewers (recipe from the Exploration Club, crafted at a Campfire) |
Dodge Shockwave | Jump or sprint away when the Runebird begins its ground slam |
Circle strafing is the core technique for this fight. Move in a wide arc around the Runebird while keeping it in your sighting reticle. When it begins a swooping dive, change direction abruptly. When it lands, be ready to jump over the shockwave. Between attacks, fire charged slingshot shots at its yellow stomach for maximum damage.
Bring cooking buffs and healing food before entering the fight. Lamb Skewers from the Exploration Club restore both Stamina and HP hearts, making them ideal for Moonlit Forest combat encounters.
Drops and Rewards
Defeating the Runebird drops materials used in crafting and quest progression:
Drop | Description |
|---|---|
Runebird Fragment | A glowing feather used in crafting and profession trial quests |
Fluorite | A crystal found in the Moonlit Forest, used to repair campsites |
The Runebird Feather may be needed for the Apprentice Explorer trial completion. Check with Zephyria at the Exploration Club for the current trial requirements.
Progression After the Runebird
After defeating the Runebird at the Gate of Life, the path opens to Dreamfall Garden. This area introduces the Luminfrog encounter and the Luminpath puzzle section. The zone progression through the Moonlit Forest follows this sequence:
Evernight Forest (starting area)
Gate of Life (Runebird fight)
Dreamfall Garden (Luminfrog encounter)
Crystalith Hideout (Crystalith boss)
Azure Bay (second Luminfrog)
Mural Valley (Glintortle boss)
Each zone also contains a campsite that can be repaired with 5 Fluorite, allowing players to set a respawn point deeper in the forest.
Tips
Bring at least 15 pellets for the Runebird fight to account for missed shots. Slingshot ammo is cheap to craft at the Workbench.
Charge your slingshot shots fully before releasing. Charged shots deal significantly more damage than quick-fire shots.
If you die during the Runebird fight, you respawn at the nearest campsite. Repair the Evernight Forest campsite before attempting the Gate of Life.
After beating the Runebird, explore the Gate of Life clearing thoroughly for ore deposits and collectible items before proceeding.
The Runebird appears in other Moonlit Forest zones as a regular enemy. Once you know its patterns from the Gate of Life fight, these later encounters are straightforward.
