Treasure Maps overview
Treasure Maps are collectible items in Starsand Island that lead you to buried treasure. When equipped, a golden arrow appears on screen pointing toward the dig location. The island has over 80 treasure chests spread across the main island and the Moonlit Forest. Approximately 37 on the island surface and 47 inside the forest. Beyond treasure map chests, there are several other chest types including secret parkour chests, resident room chests, boss drop chests, and Flawed Chests from fishing. Understanding all chest types and how to access them is key to collecting every blueprint, recipe, and rare resource in the game.
How to find Treasure Maps
Treasure Maps appear in several ways:
Inside other treasure chests. Regular treasure chests on the island and in the Moonlit Forest sometimes contain a Treasure Map as part of their loot. This is the most common source
Moonlit Forest exploration. Maps are scattered throughout the Moonlit Forest as pickups and chest drops
Random world spawns. Maps occasionally appear in random locations across the island
Treasure Maps are stored in your inventory as items. You can hold multiple maps at once, but you can only follow one golden arrow at a time. Note: tilling soil can reveal dig-spot treasure mounds (a separate mechanic), which are different from Treasure Map dig spots.
How to use a Treasure Map
Open your inventory and equip the Treasure Map like a tool or weapon
A golden arrow appears on your screen pointing toward the buried chest's location
Follow the arrow. It rotates in real time as you move, always pointing at the dig spot
When you reach the location, the ground will show a dig spot marker
Switch to a shovel and dig up the chest
Open the chest to claim your rewards
Important notes
You must hold the Treasure Map to see the golden arrow. It disappears if you switch tools
Dig spots are randomly generated per map. There is no fixed global treasure map. Each map leads to a unique spot
You cannot pre-map treasure locations. The physical act of holding the map and following the arrow is required
Maps can lead to locations across the entire island, including hard-to-reach clifftops and beaches
All chest types
Starsand Island has six distinct chest types beyond the basic treasure map dig spots:
Chest Type | Appearance | How to Access | Count |
|---|---|---|---|
Regular Treasure Chests | Brown chests with a yellow star | Found openly near piers, houses, shops, cliffs, and landmarks. Walk up and open. | ~37 island + ~47 Moonlit Forest |
Secret Chests (Parkour) | Grey and blue chests with yellow highlights | Follow a floating golden light along rails, fences, and walls without touching the ground. Use skateboard, rollerskates, or hoverboard. | 3+ on island |
Resident Chests | Hidden inside NPC bedrooms | Requires 3+ hearts friendship with the room's NPC owner to access their locked bedroom. | Multiple |
Flawed Chests | Nautical-themed containers | Found via Moonlit Forest treasure maps or fishing. Open from Bag menu (B key) → right-click → Use. | Random |
Boss Chests | Drop after boss defeats | Appear at fixed boss locations in the Moonlit Forest. Bosses respawn and always drop a chest. | 4+ |
Puzzle / Gravestar Chests | Hidden behind locked gates | Revealed after solving Gravestar puzzles. Free 3 Gravestars from Gravecrystals to unlock. | Multiple |
Secret chests (parkour)
Secret chests are triggered by a floating golden light that appears on rails, fences, and walls in certain areas. To collect them:
Approach the golden light and jump onto the rail or surface it rests on
Follow the light as it moves along the path.do not touch the ground
Use a skateboard, rollerskates, or hoverboard for easier grinding and balance
Reach the end of the path to reveal the secret chest
If you fall or touch the ground, the golden light resets to the beginning and you must try again. Secret chests reward 500-1,000 coins, processed materials (Iron Ingots, Copper Ingots, Stone Bricks, Softwood Planks), blueprints, and seeds.
Resident chests
Some NPCs have locked chests hidden inside their bedrooms. You need 3 hearts of friendship with the NPC who owns the room to gain access. Once inside, the chest can be opened like any regular chest. Check the rooms of all romanceable characters once you reach 3 hearts with them.
Flawed Chests
Flawed Chests are special nautical containers found through fishing or inside the Moonlit Forest. They have 32 storage slots (equivalent to a tier 2 crafted storage box). To open a Flawed Chest:
Open the Bag menu (B key)
Right-click the Flawed Chest in your inventory
Select "Use"
The chest produces either a placeable storage furniture item or coins. A related item, the Destroyed Chest, can be found by dredging in lakes. It functions as tier 1 storage with fewer slots.
Gravestar mechanics
Several chests in the Moonlit Forest are locked behind Gravestar puzzles. The system works as follows:
Find Gravecrystals. Glowing orange/reddish stones scattered throughout the forest. They resemble Fluorite veins and are easy to miss
Break the Gravecrystal with a pickaxe to free the trapped soul (Gravestar) inside
The freed Gravestar travels along a predetermined path toward a locked gate or hidden chest location
Free all 3 Gravestars in the area. Once all three reach their destination, the hidden chest is revealed or the gate unlocks
Some Gravestars require environmental help. For example, repairing a broken bridge with 15 Stone so the Gravestar can cross
Gravestars function as "living keys". They are essential for progression through gated areas of the forest
If a Gravestar seems stuck, look for nearby obstacles you can interact with (bridges, levers, blockages)
World Tree farming
The World Tree is a craftable item that can be planted on your farm at Hopeland. It requires Worktable Level 3 and a blueprint unlocked through exploration. Once planted, the World Tree periodically generates treasure chests, making it the most reliable repeatable source of chest loot in the game. This is the best long-term method for farming blueprints and rare materials.
Common treasure rewards
Reward Type | Examples |
|---|---|
Coins | 100-200 from regular chests, 500-1,000 from secret chests |
Seeds | Various crop and flower seeds |
Raw materials | Stone, wood, fiber, ores (copper, iron, tin) |
Processed materials | Ingots, planks, stone bricks (secret and boss chests) |
Furniture blueprints | Swing, Hanging Lantern, Mushroom Table Lamp, Vintage Keyboard, Blue Park Bench, Square Leaf Rug, Cute Armchair, Floor Mirror, Whiteboard |
Crafting recipes | Various cooking and crafting recipes |
Special drops | Water Arrow blueprint, Pristine Orbs (from Glintortle boss), combat gear blueprints |
Tips
Always carry a shovel when exploring. You cannot predict when a treasure map dig spot will be nearby
The golden arrow only appears while you hold the map. Switch back to it periodically to recheck your direction if you get lost
For secret/parkour chests, the skateboard or hoverboard makes grinding rails much easier than jumping on foot
Build the World Tree at Hopeland as soon as Worktable Level 3 is available. It is the most efficient chest farm in the game
In the Moonlit Forest, look carefully for Gravecrystals near locked gates. They glow orange and resemble Fluorite, so pay attention to the color difference
Some Gravestar paths require you to repair bridges or clear obstacles before the spirit can pass. If a Gravestar stops moving, investigate nearby interactable objects
Resident chests reset over time. Revisit NPC rooms at 3+ hearts periodically for new loot
Boss chests in the Moonlit Forest respawn when the boss respawns. Farm bosses like Glintortle for repeatable high-value drops
Check behind waterfalls throughout both the island and the Moonlit Forest. Several chests are hidden in alcoves behind water
