Brewing Barrel
The Brewing Barrel is a crafting station in Starsand Island that ferments raw crops into cooking ingredients over time. Unlike the Separator (which processes materials instantly), the Brewing Barrel works on a timer, producing items like Vinegar, Soy Sauce, and Rice Wine after a set period. These fermented products are essential ingredients for many mid-game and late-game cooking recipes.
How to Unlock
The Brewing Barrel Blueprint is purchased from the Happiness Seed Shop (run by Graminova) after reaching Junior Farmer certification. Complete Graminova's Junior Farmer trial quests to unlock the blueprint for purchase.
Crafting the Brewing Barrel
Once you have the blueprint, craft the Brewing Barrel at your Worktable. Place the finished station in a convenient spot near your farm or kitchen area. The Brewing Barrel is a placeable object that takes up a small footprint and can be placed indoors or outdoors.
Products
The Brewing Barrel produces fermented ingredients used in cooking. Load it with raw crops and wait for the fermentation timer to complete:
Product | Input Crop | Use |
|---|---|---|
Vinegar | Rice or other grain crops | Ingredient in salads, pickled dishes, and seasoning recipes |
Soy Sauce | Soybean | Ingredient in stir-fries, noodle dishes, and marinades |
Rice Wine | Rice | Ingredient in braised dishes and specialty recipes |
Fermented products cannot be eaten directly. They serve as intermediate ingredients that unlock higher-tier recipes at the cooking stations (Campfire, Gas Stove). Many buffed dishes require at least one fermented ingredient, making the Brewing Barrel a key part of the cooking pipeline.
Processing Time
Unlike the Separator (instant processing), the Brewing Barrel takes real in-game time to produce results. The fermentation timer runs while you play and even overnight. Plan ahead by loading your Brewing Barrels before bed so the products are ready in the morning. You can check the progress by interacting with the barrel.
Because of the time-based mechanic, it is a good idea to build multiple Brewing Barrels so you can run several fermentation batches in parallel. This is especially important if you cook frequently and need a steady supply of Vinegar and Soy Sauce.
Comparison with Other Processing Stations
Station | Processing | Unlock | Key Products |
|---|---|---|---|
Separator | Instant | Available early | Flour, Sugar, Salt, Vegetable Juice, Fruit Pulp, Protein Powder, Meat Bites, Fish Fillet |
Brewing Barrel | Timed (fermentation) | Junior Farmer | Vinegar, Soy Sauce, Rice Wine |
Jam Maker | Timed | Junior Farmer | Fruit jams (Fruit + Sugar) |
Pickling Jar | Timed | Junior Farmer | Pickled vegetables (Vegetables + Salt) |
Tips
Build multiple Brewing Barrels to run parallel fermentation batches. One barrel is rarely enough for active cooks.
Load the Brewing Barrel before sleeping. The fermentation timer runs overnight, so your products will be ready when you wake up.
Soybean is an all-season crop that produces Soy Sauce. Plant a steady supply to keep your Brewing Barrels fed.
Rice is also an all-season crop and produces both Vinegar and Rice Wine. Keep rice fields active year-round.
Place Brewing Barrels near your kitchen or cooking stations for a smooth workflow: harvest crops, load the barrel, and pick up fermented ingredients when cooking.
Check the cooking recipes article to see which dishes require fermented ingredients so you can plan production accordingly.
