Overview
Pets are companion animals you can adopt and befriend in Starsand Island. Unlike livestock animals that produce goods on your ranch, pets are purely for companionship and personal bonding. They follow you around the island, react to your actions, and raising their affection contributes to several achievements.
There are currently 11 adoptable animals available through three different methods: taming wild pets, purchasing from Stella's pet shop, and completing a stray animal rescue quest. An additional animal, Booboo the Panda, can be befriended and interacted with but is intentionally non-adoptable.
Pets do not consume stamina to interact with and require minimal daily maintenance once adopted. They are one of the most charming and low-pressure activities in the game, making them an excellent side goal for players of all progression levels.
How to Adopt Pets
There are three ways to bring a pet home in Starsand Island. Each method has different requirements, and all three require you to have a Pet House placed on your property before the adoption can be completed.

Method 1: Wild Taming
Nine pets are found wandering specific locations around the island during the day. To tame and adopt a wild pet, follow this process:
Locate the animal at its regular spawning area (see the complete pet table below for specific locations). Use the Map tracking feature (press M, then select Residents) to find pets. They appear at the bottom of the resident list.
Approach the animal slowly. Some pets are skittish and will run if you sprint toward them. Switch to walking mode if needed.
Interact with it and offer food from your inventory. Feeding their favorite food grants 15 affection points per interaction. Liked foods grant 10 points. Neutral foods grant 5 points.
Return regularly and feed them consistently. It takes approximately 10 to 15 days of daily feeding with favorite foods to reach Level 3 affection.
When the pet reaches Level 3 affection, the "Adopt" option becomes available in the interaction menu. Select it to bring the pet home.
The pet will appear at your Pet House on your property. Make sure you have a Pet House placed before attempting to adopt.
Method 2: Purchasing from Stella
Two pets can be purchased directly from Woof & Wow Pets for 7,500 Coins each: a brown and white puppy named Scrappy and a white kitten named Nana. Purchasing skips the affection grinding process entirely. When you buy your first pet, Stella includes a free Pet House blueprint with the purchase.
This is the fastest but most expensive way to get your first pet. You still need a Pet House and Pet Food Bowl placed on your property before purchasing. The shop is open from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily and is located on the north side of Starsand Town, near the Community Center.
Method 3: Stray Animal Rescue (404)
One pet, the stray kitten 404, is obtained through a unique quest chain that begins during the Light Up the Night! quest. Here is the process:
While fishing in the river near your cabin during the Light Up the Night! quest, a cutscene triggers showing a stray cat nearby.
Give the cat the fish you caught. After feeding it, Stella approaches and talks with you about the kitten.
When Stella asks you about adopting it, respond "of course" to accept the quest.
Stella gives you the Bamboo Cat Ear Pet Bed blueprint. Craft the bed using 1 Bamboo Strip and 3 Flannel.
Bring the crafted bed to Stella at Woof & Wow Pets. Keep the bed in your inventory (do not place it down). Talk with Stella while holding it to complete the adoption.
The kitten is named 404 by design. This is intentional, not a bug. The game does not currently support renaming pets.
Pet House Requirement
Before you can bring any pet home, you need a Pet House placed on your property. The Pet House blueprint is available from Stella at Woof & Wow Pets. Two styles are available:
Pet | Details |
|---|---|
Meadow Roof Pet House Blueprint | (100 Coins) |
Sweet Pink Roof Pet House Blueprint | (100 Coins) |
Craft the house at your Worktable and place it on your property before attempting any adoptions. You also need a Pet Food Bowl to feed your adopted pets at home. When purchasing your first pet from Stella, a free Pet House blueprint is included.

The following table lists all 11 pets that can be adopted in the current build. Nine can be found in the wild, and two (Nana and the brown/white Scrappy) are purchased from Stella's shop.

Booboo the Panda
Booboo is a giant panda found at the Panda House east of Cloudrest Lake. You can interact with Booboo and feed her, and an affection meter is tracked. However, Booboo is intentionally non-adoptable by design. Even after reaching maximum affection, the Adopt button does not appear. The developers have confirmed this is not a bug.
Booboo's Feeding Quest
Booboo has a five-stage feeding quest chain. Each stage requires you to bring Fresh Bamboo Shoots in escalating quantities:

Stage | Bamboo Shoots Required | Total So Far |
|---|---|---|
Stage 1 | 15 | 15 |
Stage 2 | 25 | 40 |
Stage 3 | 25 | 65 |
Stage 4 | 30 | 95 |
Stage 5 | 35 | 130 |
After completing all five stages, you can pet and play with Booboo whenever you visit the Panda House. Fresh Bamboo Shoots can be gathered from bamboo groves around the island.
Pet Affection System
Each pet has its own affection meter visible in the Social tab of your StarNote. Affection increases through daily interactions and decreases slowly if you neglect them for extended periods. Pets have five affection levels total. Level 3 is the threshold for adoption. After adoption, you can continue to unlock Levels 4 and 5, which provide additional interaction options like special animations and emotes.
Action | Affection Points | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
Feed favorite food | +15 | Once per day |
Feed liked food | +10 | Once per day |
Feed neutral food | +5 | Once per day |
Pet or greet | +5 | Once per day |
Neglect (no interaction for 3+ days) | -5 per day | Automatic |
Pets require approximately 10 to 15 days of consistent daily feeding with favorite foods to reach Level 3 (the adoption threshold). Using liked foods extends this to roughly 15 to 20 days.
Efficient Food Sourcing
Sheep Cheese Block is the favorite or liked food for the majority of pets. It is crafted from Sheep Milk, which requires owning sheep through ranching. Craft multiple blocks in advance and keep them in storage for pet visits.
Pasture Grass is the favorite food for both Mellowhen and Zippy, and it is the easiest favorite food to obtain. It grows in 12 hours, costs only 25 Coins per seed from Graminova, and grows in all four seasons.
Celeste Berry (for Bobo) is a foraged berry found around the island. Keep an eye out for berry bushes during your daily routine.
Yellowtail Damselfish (for Meow Alum) requires fishing at ocean fishing spots. Bring the correct bait type and catch a few extras to stockpile.
Moorish Idol (for 404) is another ocean fish. It can be caught at the same ocean spots as the Yellowtail Damselfish.
Basic Carnivore/Herbivore Pet Food serves as a liked food for almost every pet. It can be purchased from Stella at Woof & Wow Pets, making it a convenient fallback when you do not have access to a specific pet's favorite food.
Pet Care After Adoption
Feeding
Adopted pets need regular feeding. Place a Pet Food Bowl near the Pet House on your property and keep it stocked with food. Pets will eat from the bowl on their own schedule. Running out of food for several days will cause the pet's affection to decrease gradually.
Interacting
You can pet and interact with your adopted animals daily for bonus affection points. Some pets will approach you when you walk near them on your property. Others may be sleeping or wandering and need to be found.
Pet Outfits
Stella sells cosmetic outfits for your pets at Woof & Wow Pets. Outfits are purely decorative and do not affect pet behavior, stats, or happiness. They persist through save and load cycles. A previous issue where pet outfits would reset after reloading was fixed in patch 0.3.3595.
Multiple Pets
You can adopt all 11 pets simultaneously. Each pet needs its own Pet House, and all pet food bowls share the same food supply. Having multiple pets on your property is one of the most satisfying visual features of the game, as they wander around your farm and interact with each other.

Pet-Related Achievements
Achievement | Requirement | Reward |
|---|---|---|
Fluffy Life | Adopt 1 pet | Starsand Points + cosmetic |
Fluffy Addiction | Adopt 3 pets | Starsand Points + cosmetic |
Fluffy Recluse | Adopt 6 pets | Starsand Points + cosmetic |
These achievements count adopted pets only. Pets that you have fed but not yet adopted (still wild) do not count toward the totals. The quickest path to Fluffy Recluse is to focus on the four pets whose favorite food is Sheep Cheese Block, plus Mellowhen and Zippy who prefer Pasture Grass.
Tips and Strategies
Tip | Details |
|---|---|
Start with Mellowhen and Zippy | Both are located in Hopeland, your starting area, and their favorite food (Pasture Grass) is one of the first crops you can grow. Adopt both simultaneously for efficient progress toward the Fluffy Addiction achievement. |
Invest in sheep early | Getting sheep from Pastelle at the Green Pasture Ranch gives you a reliable source of Sheep Cheese Block through milk processing, which satisfies four different wild pets. |
Complete the 404 quest early | The stray kitten quest triggers naturally during Light Up the Night!, so you get a free pet without spending coins or grinding affection. Just remember to craft the Bamboo Cat Ear Pet Bed and bring it to Stella. |
Use the map tracking feature | Press M, then select Residents to locate pets during the day. Pets have daily movement patterns similar to NPCs and appear at the bottom of the resident list. |
Carry extra food in your inventory | During your daily routine, when you pass by a pet's usual location, feed them to maintain the daily streak without making a dedicated trip. |
Visit Booboo with bamboo shoots | Stock up on Fresh Bamboo Shoots before heading to the Panda House. You need 130 total across all five quest stages, so gathering them in bulk saves multiple trips. |
Do not waste resources on adopting Booboo | Booboo is intentionally non-adoptable. You can still interact with and enjoy the panda after completing the feeding quest, but she will never appear at your farm. |
