Overview
The Antumbra Order is a dark religious faction in Crimson Desert that profanes light and life across the continent of Pywel. Its members worship darkness through ritualistic human sacrifice, believing that only darkness can bring true equality and freedom to a world plagued by discrimination and imbalance. The Order maintains scattered sanctuaries throughout Pywel, corrupting holy sites known as Sanctums and turning them into strongholds for their rituals.
The Antumbra Order faction quests are a series of side quests that task players with confronting the Order's influence by cleansing corrupted Sanctums and defeating powerful Antumbra bosses. These quests become available during Chapter 5 of the main story after unlocking the Witches faction. Completing the full questline rewards some of the strongest weapons and gear in the game, making it essential content for anyone pushing into the late game.
The questline is split into two tracked faction quests: Darkness Over the Sanctum, which involves cleansing four Sanctums assigned by the Witch of Wisdom, and Cloister of Ruination, which requires defeating three Antumbra bosses across different Sanctums before confronting Ator, the Antumbra Archon in a final showdown.
Prerequisites
Before you can begin the Antumbra Order questline, you need to meet certain requirements:
Reach Chapter 5 of the main story. After the first boss fight in Chapter 5, you will receive a letter from a bird that unlocks the Missing Seal quest.
Unlock Elowen, the Witch of Wisdom. Follow the Missing Seal quest until you arrive at a small farmstead being raided by bandits. Clear the area of all enemies, then enter the main house through a hole in the roof and rescue the tied NPC inside. That NPC turns out to be Elowen.
Visit Elowen's House. After the rescue, Elowen marks her actual house on your map. It is located north of The Witchwoods, surrounded by red flowers and a fountain. Travel there, activate the nearby Abyss Nexus fast travel point, and speak with her to begin the sanctum cleansing tasks.
You cannot solve any Sanctum puzzles until you have formally met the Witch who owns that particular Sanctum. The game will let you kill the enemies, but the final puzzle mechanics remain locked without the corresponding Witch's blessing. For the four Sanctums in the Darkness Over the Sanctum quest, you need Elowen unlocked. Other Sanctums belonging to different Witches (like the Witch of Kindness or the Witch of Strength) require meeting those Witches separately.
Quest List
Quest | Type | Key Objectives | Notable Rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
Darkness Over the Sanctum | Faction Quest | Cleanse four Sanctums for Elowen | Kuku Blueprints, Witch's Token, Alchemy Formula |
Cloister of Ruination | Faction Quest | Defeat three Antumbra bosses, then face Ator | Vessel of Dark Pursuit, Abyss Artifact |
Darkness Over the Sanctum
Darkness Over the Sanctum is a faction quest that asks you to cleanse four corrupted Sanctums in the Hernand region on behalf of Elowen, the Witch of Wisdom. The four Sanctums can be completed in any order. Each Sanctum follows the same general pattern: arrive at the location, defeat all Antumbra cultists and warpriests until the green liberation bar reaches 0%, then solve a puzzle involving Fusion Reactor Cores and the Kuku Pot to restore the Sanctum's generator. After cleansing all four Sanctums, return to Elowen at the Witch's House to complete the quest.
Elowen's Four Sanctums
Sanctum | Location | Boss | Kuku Blueprint Reward | Treasure Chest Loot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Sanctum of Temperance | Pororin Forest, Hernand (southeast of Hernand City) | None | Kuku Lightning Spear, Kuku Bird Boltspitter | Odeck's Protector Plate Boots |
Sanctum of Penitence | Plateau southeast of Hernand City, past Unicorn Cliff | None | Kuku Pack | Blackwing Leather Gloves |
Sanctum of Benediction | Everfrost Mountains, western snowy mountains of Hernand | None | Kuku Marni Laser Helm | Leather Helm of the Fallen Kingdom |
Sanctum of Absolution | Southwest Hernand, south of Scholastone Institute | Enhanced Kuku Pot, Kuku Spear | Sunset Reed Cloth Boots |
Sanctum of Temperance
The Sanctum of Temperance is located in the Pororin Forest in Hernand, southeast of Hernand City just beyond the Goldleaf Merchant settlement. Look for a crevice in the cliff face to find the entrance. You must reach Chapter 5 and unlock Elowen before the puzzle mechanics become accessible.
Combat Phase: Upon arriving, defeat the Antumbra cultists occupying the Sanctum. The area contains flying wizards that you should shoot down with arrows before engaging in melee combat. Keep fighting until the green liberation bar on the left side of your screen reaches 0%.
Puzzle Solution:
Find the first Fusion Reactor Core at the bottom of the stairway near the Sanctum's entrance. Seal it in your Kuku Pot using Axiom Force.
Locate the second core. Burn the vine-covered passages using the Blinding Flash ability to access a hidden area, then reach the upper room by climbing the wall after burning the vines on the main machine's adjacent wall.
Take the Fusion Reactor from the upper room and return to the main chamber.
Discard the round-topped Reactor from your Kuku Pot and use Axiom Force to drag it onto the missing pillar to the left of the main machine. Secure it with an Aerial Force Palm.
Place the cube-shaped Fusion Reactor Core into the square-shaped hole on the main machine using a regular Force Palm to complete the puzzle.
Rewards: After a cutscene with Elowen, you receive the Kuku Lightning Spear and Kuku Bird Boltspitter blueprints. The hidden chest behind the burned vines contains the Odeck's Protector Plate Boots with HP regeneration.
Sanctum of Penitence
The Sanctum of Penitence sits on top of a plateau far southeast of Hernand City, past Unicorn Cliff, near the southeastern border of the Hernand region. It is located beyond the Goldleaf Trading Post and relatively close to the Sanctum of Temperance. Use the nearest Abyss Nexus fast travel point and ride by horseback to the Sanctum.
Combat Phase: Clear the Antumbra forces from the area. Fight until the liberation progress bar reaches 0%. This Sanctum does not have an Antumbra boss, so the combat encounter is focused on rank-and-file cultists and warpriests.
Puzzle Solution:
Head away from the main machine toward the south into the ruins. Descend the staircase and find the Fusion Reactor Core sitting in the rubble below. Retrieve it using Axiom Force and seal it in your Kuku Pot.
For a hidden treasure, ascend the same staircase and drop into the ruins surrounded by pillars. Stand in the marked spot and wait for the ground to collapse, revealing a hidden chamber with a treasure chest containing the Blackwing Leather Gloves (part of the Crowcaller's Blackwing armor set).
Return to the main machine and discard the Fusion Reactor Core from your Kuku Pot. Position it over the broken pillar.
Climb atop the pillar and use an Aerial Force Palm to secure the core permanently, completing the cleansing.
Rewards: You receive the Kuku Pack blueprint upon completing this Sanctum.
Sanctum of Benediction
The Sanctum of Benediction is located high in the Everfrost Mountains, in the western snowy mountains of the Hernand region. You can reach it from the Starlight Storm Cave Abyss Nexus fast travel point by mounting your horse and following a long, winding road down to the ice-covered structure. Alternatively, follow the path south of the Everfrost near the Nas River.
Combat Phase: Defeat all Antumbra soldiers guarding the Sanctum. Flying enemies should be shot down with arrows before switching to melee. Equip ice resistance gear and stock consumables that protect against frost damage, as the snowy environment poses additional hazards.
Puzzle Solution:
Head to the southwestern entrance and climb the stone staircases to the courtyard. Enter the doorway to find the first Fusion Reactor Core. Use Axiom Force to hold it and seal it in your Kuku Pot.
Locate the tower structure with glowing stones at its base. The entrance is blocked by bricks, but you can gain access by lighting the stone lantern to the right of the entrance. Once lit, the entrance unlocks.
Enter the tower and retrieve the second Fusion Reactor Core (the sphere-shaped one). Seal it in your Kuku Pot.
Return to the main machine area. Place the round-topped sphere core onto the broken pillar and secure it with an Aerial Force Palm.
Insert the cube-shaped core into the main machine's square slot using a regular Force Palm to complete the puzzle.
Rewards: You receive the Kuku Marni Laser Helm blueprint. The treasure chest in the area contains the Leather Helm of the Fallen Kingdom.
Sanctum of Absolution
The Sanctum of Absolution is located in southwest Hernand, directly south of Scholastone Institute. An Abyss Nexus fast travel point sits nearby for convenient access. This is the most dangerous of Elowen's four Sanctums because it features a mandatory boss fight against Antumbra's Sword before you can proceed with the puzzle. See the Cloister of Ruination section below for the detailed boss strategy.
Puzzle Solution (after defeating Antumbra's Sword):
Destroy the clay pots in the corridor below the boss arena to find the first Fusion Reactor Core (cube-shaped). Seal it in your Kuku Pot.
After the platform collapses, navigate through fire traps in the adjacent room to grab the second core (round pillar shape) floating in the air.
Place the round pillar core on the broken pillar and use Aerial Force Palm to lock it in place.
Insert the cube core into the square hole on the main machine using Force Palm to complete the cleansing.
Hidden Treasure Room: Execute a Focused Force Palm on the square indent near the main machine to flip a wall panel. Navigate to the exterior, stand on the flipped platform, and perform another Force Palm to open a secondary chamber. Light the stone lantern inside to exit and collect the Sunset Reed Cloth Boots with extractable Abyss Gears from the treasure chest.
Rewards: You receive the Enhanced Kuku Pot and Kuku Spear blueprints. Defeating the Antumbra's Sword boss itself also awards an Abyss Artifact and the Vessel of Dark Pursuit two-handed sword.
Completing Darkness Over the Sanctum
After cleansing all four Sanctums, return to Elowen at the Witch's House in the Witchwoods to turn in the quest. She will reward you with the following:
Blue Lavenders x20
Peonies x20
Small Bones x20
Empty Bottle x20
Alchemy Formula: Freya's Lesser Elixir x1
Witch's Token x1
The Witch's Token from Elowen is one of four tokens needed to open the sealed door at the Wayward Woods Witch Hideout. The other three tokens come from the Witch of Kindness, the Witch of Strength, and the Witch of Humility. Collecting all four tokens grants access to powerful endgame content beyond the hideout door.
Cloister of Ruination
The Cloister of Ruination is the second Antumbra Order faction quest, and it represents the culmination of the Order's threat. To unseal the Cloister, you must defeat three Antumbra bosses that guard Sanctums across the world. Importantly, you do not need to fully cleanse these Sanctums to progress the Cloister quest; simply defeating the boss at each location is enough to count toward unlocking the Cloister.
The Cloister of Ruination itself is located in the far west of Pailune, close to Silver Wolf Mountain. You can reach it by entering the Wayward Woods and following the path to the entrance. An Abyss Cresset fast travel point sits at the highest tower point nearby.
Required Antumbra Boss Defeats
Boss | Sanctum | Region | Boss Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
Sanctum of Absolution | Hernand (southwest, south of Scholastone Institute) | Vessel of Dark Pursuit, Abyss Artifact | |
Sanctum of Revelation | Demeniss (northeast of Serpent Marsh) | Blueprint II: Kuku Rishi's Boots | |
Antumbra's Staff | Sanctum of Solace | Pailune (southwest of Pailune City) | Guidance of Dark Pursuit, Kuku Bismuth Spear |
Boss Fight: Antumbra's Sword
Antumbra's Sword is found at the Sanctum of Absolution in southwest Hernand. This is widely considered the most challenging of the three Antumbra bosses and demands significant preparation. Invest Abyss Artifacts into the focus node on the skill tree to reach Focus level 3 before attempting this fight, as it is the single most important preparation step.
Preparation:
Bring at least three Palmar Pills so you can revive and continue the fight after getting knocked down.
Refine and upgrade all equipment (weapons and armor) to Tier 3 or Tier 4.
Unlock Focus level 3 via the Abyss Artifact skill tree.
Unlock Keen Senses Lv. 2 to slow time when dodging, giving you more reaction time during the boss's fast combos.
Stock up on healing food. Clear Soup is a solid, accessible choice.
Spears are the recommended weapon type for this encounter. Their reach lets you attack during brief recovery windows without standing in point-blank melee range.
Attack Patterns:
Attack | Description | Counter Strategy |
|---|---|---|
Ground Thrust | The boss lifts its sword with both hands before slamming it into the ground, sending a shockwave outward. | Activate Blinding Flash as soon as the sword is raised to cancel the attack entirely. |
Triple Shadow Strike | The boss emits black mist, teleports around the arena three times, and performs wide slashing attacks at each position. | Dodge each teleport attack, then activate Blinding Flash after the third strike to cancel the follow-up combo. |
Triple Illusion Strike | A wide sweeping slash followed by three spectral apparitions that leap toward you with downward slashes, creating sword waves on impact. | Perfect dodge all three apparition attacks. They can one-shot you at low health, so do not attempt to block. |
Unblockable Red Slashes | The boss glows red and performs a series of vertical sword slashes that cannot be blocked or parried. | Dodge through the gaps between vertical slashes. Do not attempt to block when the boss glows red. |
Standard Melee Combo | Regular sword swings and slashes during normal combat stance. | Enter Focus mode and spam the block button (LB/L1/CTRL) for a guaranteed parry that staggers the boss. |
Recommended Strategy:
Enter Focus mode (both sticks on controller, or X on keyboard) and wait for the boss to attack with standard melee swings.
Hold or spam the block button to trigger a guaranteed parry, which staggers Antumbra's Sword and opens a combo window.
Unleash your damage combo, then re-enter Focus mode before the boss recovers.
Repeat this cycle until the boss's poise bar fills completely, triggering an extended vulnerability phase where you can deal massive damage.
Use Blinding Flash to cancel the Ground Thrust and Triple Shadow Strike attacks. After a successful Blinding Flash, chain into a Blinding Flash Finisher to close the distance and continue your combo.
Apply the Stab skill whenever you have an opening after parrying, as it inflicts bleed damage that chips away at the boss's health over time.
Use the pillar in the arena as cover during recovery phases. The boss cannot destroy it.
Rewards: Defeating Antumbra's Sword grants an Abyss Artifact x1 and the Vessel of Dark Pursuit, a Rank 4 two-handed sword with the special Wound of Darkness passive. This weapon sends a projectile wave whenever you use Turning Slash, replicating the boss's own vertical slash attack. With 25 Attack, 5 gear slots, and Refinement Level 4, the Vessel of Dark Pursuit is one of the strongest weapons obtainable in mid-game and remains competitive through late game with continued refinement.
Boss Fight: Antumbra's Spear
Antumbra's Spear guards the Sanctum of Revelation, located northeast of the Serpent Marsh in Demeniss. The Sanctum sits on an isolated patch of land surrounded by water. This boss is generally easier than Antumbra's Sword due to its more repetitive and predictable attack patterns.
Combat Phase: Upon entering the Sanctum, cultists and warpriests engage you immediately. Some enemies float within protective spheres and actively chase you. Use AoE attacks near large groups of enemies to clear them efficiently rather than fighting one by one.
Boss Strategy: Antumbra's Spear uses repetitive attack patterns that are easier to read than the other two Antumbra bosses. The key mechanic is the Force Palm stun: hitting the boss with Force Palm will stun it for several seconds, creating a reliable damage window. Exploit these stun windows aggressively by using your strongest combos every time the boss is staggered.
Post-Boss Puzzle: After defeating Antumbra's Spear and clearing the remaining enemies (reducing the green bar to 0%), search for the Fusion Reactor Cores and install them in the generator using Axiom Force and Force Palm to cleanse the Sanctum.
Rewards: Defeating Antumbra's Spear and restoring the Sanctum of Revelation grants the Blueprint II: Kuku Rishi's Boots. The reward is given after speaking with the Witch of Strength upon completing the cleansing.
Boss Fight: Antumbra's Staff
Antumbra's Staff is the boss of the Sanctum of Solace, located southwest of Pailune City (or east of the Witch's House). You can reach it by heading southwest from Pailune or by teleporting to a nearby Abyss Nexus. Meeting the Witch of Kindness near Silverwolf Cave in Pailune is a prerequisite for accessing this Sanctum.
Boss Strategy: Antumbra's Staff has one particularly dangerous attack where it charges and slams the staff into the ground, dealing heavy area damage. You must interrupt this attack by using Force Palm the moment you see the charge-up animation begin. If you fail to interrupt, the ground slam can take out a huge chunk of your health or even one-shot you at lower gear levels. Outside of this signature move, the boss follows a more manageable attack rhythm that can be handled with parries and well-timed dodges.
Post-Boss Puzzle (Two Fusion Reactor Cores):
Core XXXV-II: Turn away from the area where Antumbra's Staff was fought and jump toward the small water pool. Move to the two columns nearby and use Axiom Force to seal the core in your Kuku Pot.
Core XV: Turn around and head toward the gap in the wall. Enter through the opening and use Axiom Force to retrieve the core from behind bars. Store it in the Kuku Pot.
Install both cores into the generator to fully cleanse the Sanctum, reducing the green bar to 0%.
Rewards: Defeating Antumbra's Staff grants the Guidance of Dark Pursuit, a weapon for Oongka. Completing the full Sanctum cleansing also awards the Kuku Bismuth Spear blueprint.
Final Boss: Ator, the Antumbra Archon
Once you have defeated all three Antumbra bosses (Antumbra's Sword, Antumbra's Spear, and Antumbra's Staff), the Cloister of Ruination is unsealed. Travel to the Cloister in the far west of Pailune near Silver Wolf Mountain, accessible through the Wayward Woods.
From the top of the Cloister, glide down through the tower to the lowest floor. If all three Antumbra bosses have been defeated, Ator, the Antumbra Archon, will appear and the final fight begins. Ator is the sealed leader of the Antumbra forces within the Cloister and represents the toughest challenge in the Antumbra Order questline.
Preparation Tips:
Ensure all your gear is refined to at least Tier 4 before this encounter.
Bring a full stock of Palmar Pills and healing consumables.
Ator's arena may include additional Antumbra enemies joining the fight, so AoE abilities and crowd control skills are valuable.
Apply everything you learned from the previous three boss fights, as Ator tests your mastery of parrying, dodging, and Blinding Flash timing.
Rewards: Completing the Cloister of Ruination and defeating Ator awards an Abyss Artifact x1 and the Vessel of Dark Pursuit if you have not already received it from the Antumbra's Sword fight. This marks the conclusion of the Antumbra Order faction questline.

Vessel of Dark Pursuit
The Vessel of Dark Pursuit is the signature reward of the Antumbra Order questline and one of the best two-handed swords in Crimson Desert. Here are its base stats:
Stat | Value |
|---|---|
Type | Two-Handed Sword |
Rarity | Unique (Abyss Gear) |
Attack | 25 |
Defense | 0 |
Attack Speed | Lv. 0 |
Movement Speed | Lv. 0 |
Critical Rate | Lv. 0 |
Refinement Level | 4 |
Gear Slots | 5 |
Passive Effects | Wound of Darkness, Destruction I |
The Wound of Darkness passive sends a projectile wave whenever you use Turning Slash, effectively replicating the devastating vertical slash that Antumbra's Sword uses during the boss fight. With proper refinement, this weapon remains competitive well into the late game and serves as a reliable carry weapon for players progressing through mid-game content.
Tips and Strategies
Focus on Focus mode. Investing Abyss Artifacts into the Focus skill tree is the most impactful preparation for all Antumbra boss fights. Focus level 3 gives you guaranteed parries that trivialize standard melee attacks.
Blinding Flash is your best friend. This ability cancels the two most dangerous attacks from Antumbra's Sword (Ground Thrust and Triple Shadow Strike). Always have it ready for the Sanctum of Absolution fight.
You do not need to cleanse Sanctums to unlock the Cloister. Simply defeating the three Antumbra bosses is enough. If you want to save time on your first pass, you can skip the puzzles and return later to complete them for the Kuku blueprints.
Complete the Witch of Wisdom quest first. Elowen's four Sanctums are all in Hernand and relatively close together. Finishing them early gives you access to valuable Kuku blueprints and gets you started on collecting the four Witch's Tokens.
Spears work well against Antumbra's Sword. The extra reach lets you land hits during narrow recovery windows without standing in the boss's melee danger zone.
Watch for the red glow. Any attack from an Antumbra boss that has a red visual effect is unblockable. Do not attempt to parry these; dodge through them instead.
Bring Palmar Pills to every boss fight. Three pills is the recommended minimum. They allow you to revive and continue the fight instead of restarting from scratch.
Interrupt Antumbra's Staff. The charged ground slam is the most dangerous attack in the Sanctum of Solace fight. Hit the boss with Force Palm during the charge-up animation to cancel it before it lands.
Use AoE for trash mobs. Antumbra cultists and warpriests often cluster in groups at Sanctum entrances. AoE attacks clear them faster than single-target combat.
Explore for hidden treasure. Every Sanctum has at least one hidden treasure chest that requires extra exploration. The Sanctum of Absolution has a particularly well-hidden room accessed by using Focused Force Palm on a wall indent.
