Overview
Abyss Cressets are ancient stone structures scattered across the continent of Pywel in Crimson Desert. Unlike Abyss Nexuses, which activate immediately when you step on them, Abyss Cressets are locked behind puzzles housed inside Ancient Ruins. Solving each puzzle activates the Cresset as a fast travel point and rewards you with an Abyss Artifact, a collectible that can be spent on skill upgrades and gear enhancement.
On your map, unvisited Cressets show up as white circles with a question mark, labeled "Mysterious Energy." Walking up to one reveals whether it is an Abyss Nexus (free activation) or an Abyss Cresset (puzzle required). Cressets are almost always found inside ruined structures, so if you spot crumbling walls or old pillars near a Mysterious Energy marker, expect a puzzle.
How Abyss Cressets Work
When you first approach an Abyss Cresset, you will see a small pillar with a glowing prompt that reads "Take." However, you cannot interact with it until the associated Ancient Ruins puzzle is completed. Each ruin has its own self-contained challenge, ranging from pressure plate circuits to rotating statue puzzles to brazier-lighting sequences. Once the puzzle is solved, the pillar unlocks and you can collect the Abyss Artifact sitting inside.
After collecting the artifact, the Cresset lights up permanently and becomes available as a fast travel destination. You can teleport to any activated Cresset or Nexus from anywhere on the map by opening your map and double-clicking (or pressing Y on a controller) on the location icon. Fast travel is disabled during combat and certain scripted sequences.
There is also an alternate discovery method. If you use the Blinding Flash ability with your sword (hold the sword aloft and release a pulse of light), Abyss Cressets in the surrounding area appear as a faint white glint on the horizon. This can help you locate Cressets that are off the beaten path or hidden behind terrain.
Known Abyss Cresset Locations
Abyss Cressets are distributed across every major region of Pywel. The table below lists confirmed locations, the region they belong to, and a brief description of the puzzle involved.
Cresset Location | Region | Puzzle Type |
|---|---|---|
Meandering Hills Ruins | Pressure plate circuit. Three plates on a wall must be struck in the correct order with Force Palm: center, right, left. Solving the circuit lights up a glowing line across all plates. | |
Sunrise Plains (Grace Estate) | Rotating statue puzzle. Four statues are linked in pairs. Pierce each statue's base with your sword (RB+Y) and push it to rotate. All four statues must face inward to complete the puzzle. | |
Trembling Woods Ruins | Rotating ring alignment. Three handles control metal rings that must overlay circular patterns on the wall. One handle is broken and requires a sword lunge attack to turn. Two bears guard the entrance. | |
Hernand Highlands Ruins | Climbing challenge. Reach the top of a tall rocky pillar surrounded by Bismuth Crabs and covered in life-eating plants. The Cresset sits at the summit. | |
Hernandian Ruins | Brazier puzzle. Light unlit braziers in the correct sequence using Fire Alchemy. The order is shown on faded murals painted on the surrounding walls. | |
Kweiden Ancient Ruins | Illusion wall and pressure plate. Break through a hidden wall with Telekinesis to reveal the ruin entrance, then coordinate with a mercenary standing on a pressure plate to reach the Cresset chamber. | |
Demeniss Southern Ruins | Brazier and lever combination. Light two braziers flanking a locked gate, then pull the central lever. The Cresset is in the chamber beyond. | |
Pailune Ruins | Multi-stage pillar repair. Retrieve scattered pillar fragments from nearby structures and place them on incomplete columns using Axiom Force. Completing all pillars unseals the Cresset. | |
Delysia Coastal Ruins | Weight plate puzzle. Move heavy stone blocks onto pressure plates in the correct configuration. The solution is etched into the floor pattern. | |
Crimson Desert Border Ruins | Crimson Desert | Fire Alchemy sequence. Light a chain of braziers within a time limit. The braziers extinguish if you take too long, so plan your route before starting. |
More Abyss Cressets exist throughout Pywel beyond those listed here. As you progress through the main story and unlock new regions, additional Mysterious Energy markers will appear on your map.
Rewards
Every Abyss Cresset you activate grants one Abyss Artifact. These cube-shaped objects function as a form of skill currency with multiple uses:
Skill Upgrades: Spend Abyss Artifacts at the skill tree to unlock or level up abilities for sword combat, alchemy, archery, and other disciplines.
Gear Enhancement: Later in the game (from roughly Chapter 5 onward), you can bring Abyss Artifacts to a Witch to upgrade equipment tiers.
Abyss Core Installation: Some high-tier weapons and armor have Abyss Core slots. Installing cores requires spending additional artifacts at a Witch's workshop.
Abyss Artifacts can also be purchased from certain vendors, including Patrigio the Wandering Merchant and Witch shops in each region, but farming Cresset puzzles remains the most reliable free source.
Tips for Finding and Solving Cresset Puzzles
Switch your map to the "Environment" tab when zoomed out. Fast travel icons (both Nexuses and Cressets) are easier to spot on this layer.
Use Blinding Flash regularly while exploring open terrain. The white glint it reveals for nearby Cressets can point you toward ruins you might otherwise ride past.
If a Cresset puzzle has you stuck, check the walls and floors of the ruin for visual clues. Brazier sequences are almost always depicted on nearby murals, and pressure plate orders are often hinted at by floor engravings.
Bring a mercenary companion to ruins whenever possible. Several puzzles require a second person to stand on a pressure plate while you access the reward chamber.
Some puzzles involve environmental hazards like bears or crabs. Clear the enemies first so you can focus on the puzzle without interruption.
If your controller vibrates near a dead end inside a ruin, try using Telekinesis to pull loose rocks away. Hidden passages are common in Ancient Ruins.
