Overview
Hydrangeas are a group of four flowers in Starsand Island that serve primarily as high-value NPC gifts. They come in four colors: Blue, Light Blue, Pink, and Purple. Blue and Light Blue varieties can be found growing wild across the island, always together on the same plant. Pink and Purple hydrangeas may be obtained through cross-breeding on your farm. Hydrangeas are among the most universally liked gifts in the game, with nearly every NPC having at least one hydrangea color they appreciate.
Hydrangea Colors
Color | Source | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
Blue Hydrangea | Wild harvest, NPC gifts | Most widely liked gift in the game. Safe default for nearly every NPC. |
Light Blue Hydrangea | Wild harvest, NPC gifts | Loved by Delphin. Found alongside Blue on the same plant. |
Pink Hydrangea | NPC gifts (cross-breeding unconfirmed) | |
Purple Hydrangea | Cross-breeding, rare wild | Hardest to obtain. Loved by Nia. Highest sell price of the four. |

Wild Harvest Locations
Hydrangeas grow wild in several areas across the island. They respawn every few in-game days after being harvested. Use an Axe to chop wild hydrangeas. Harvesting occasionally yields hydrangea seeds that you can replant on your farm.
Location | Colors Available | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Blue, Light Blue | Densest hydrangea spawns on the island. Located between Green Meadow and Cloudrest Lake. Easy access, no enemies. | |
Blue, Light Blue | Scattered throughout the forest floor, especially near the Evernight Forest zone. Bring combat gear for the enemies. | |
Blue | Found along the lakeshores and in the bamboo forest area north of the lake. | |
Blue, Light Blue | Grow on the hillsides and around the temple grounds. Safe area with no enemies. |
Seasonal Availability
Hydrangeas only grow during Summer and Autumn. During Spring and Winter, wild hydrangeas do not spawn and planted hydrangeas will not bloom. Plan your harvesting and stockpiling accordingly.
Season | Availability |
|---|---|
Summer | Peak blooming season. All colors available in abundance. Best time to harvest in bulk and build a stockpile. |
Autumn | Still available but spawn rates decrease compared to Summer. Last chance before Winter. |
Winter | No hydrangeas grow outdoors. Use stockpiled hydrangeas or the Greenhouse. |
Spring | No hydrangeas grow outdoors. Use stockpiled hydrangeas or the Greenhouse. |
The Greenhouse (unlocked at Expert Farmer) can grow hydrangeas year-round regardless of season, provided you have seeds.
Obtaining Hydrangea Seeds
There are several ways to get hydrangea seeds for planting on your farm:
Method | Details |
|---|---|
Wild harvesting | Chopping wild hydrangeas with an Axe sometimes yields seeds. Not guaranteed, so harvest as many plants as possible. |
Hydrangea seeds become available for purchase at Senior Farmer rank from Graminova's shop. | |
NPC gifts | NPCs sometimes give you hydrangeas as gifts during daily interactions, especially female characters. Sylvain also gives them frequently. |
Cross-breeding | Successful cross-breeds produce a new hydrangea plant that can be harvested for both the flower and a chance at seeds. |
Cross-Breeding Hydrangeas
You can grow hydrangeas on your farm at Hopeland and cross-breed them to produce different colors. This uses the flower cross-breeding system, which works for all flower species in the game.
How Cross-Breeding Works
1. Plant two hydrangea seeds of different colors on tilled soil, leaving one empty plot between them.
2. Water both plants and maintain the empty plot between them (keep it tilled and watered).
3. Wait for both parent plants to fully mature. Hydrangeas take approximately 4 days and 18 hours to reach maturity.
4. Once both parents are mature, there is a chance that a new hydrangea of a different color will spawn on the empty plot between them.
5. The resulting color depends on the two parent colors. Cross-breeding only works between flowers of the same species (hydrangea with hydrangea).
Color Combinations
The following combinations have been identified by the community. Purple is the hardest color to obtain and typically requires a two-parent combination involving Blue.
Parent 1 | Parent 2 | Possible Result |
|---|---|---|
Blue | Pink | Light Blue or Purple |
Blue | Light Blue | Purple |
Pink | Light Blue | Purple |
Same color | Same color | Same color (no hybrid) |
Cross-breeding is probability-based and not guaranteed to succeed on every attempt. Using Nutrient Soil IV fertilizer on the parent plots after planting boosts pollination probability by 15%. Nutrient Soil IV is available at Senior Farmer rank from the Happiness Seed Shop for 250 coins per 5 bags.
Cross-Breeding Tips
To maximize your chances of getting Purple Hydrangeas, use the Blue + Pink combination with Nutrient Soil IV on both parent plots. Set up multiple breeding pairs to run attempts in parallel. Each pair needs three plots in a row: parent, empty, parent.
Once you have a hybrid hydrangea, you can use it as a parent in new cross-breeding attempts. This lets you chain results, for example using a cross-bred Purple hydrangea paired with a Blue to try for more Purples.
NPC Gift Preferences
Hydrangeas are one of the most efficient gift categories because so many NPCs like them. Each hydrangea color gives +10 affection for NPCs who like it and +15 affection for NPCs who love it. See the Romance Guide for how affection points work.

Uses Beyond Gifting
Use | Details |
|---|---|
Selling | Hydrangeas can be sold at the General Store. Purple Hydrangeas fetch the highest price. Sell to the rotating merchant vendor for 200% normal value. |
Each hydrangea color is tracked in the Islandpedia under flowers. Collect all four for completion. | |
Decoration | Planted hydrangeas serve as decorative farm flowers during Summer and Autumn. |
Senior Farmer trial | The flower cross-breeding mechanic (which includes hydrangeas) is part of the Senior Farmer profession trial. |
Tips
Blue Hydrangea is the safest universal gift. It is liked by more NPCs than any other single item in the game. Keep a stack in your inventory at all times.
Stockpile hydrangeas during Summer and Autumn. Keep 20 to 30 of each color in a chest for year-round gifting during Winter and Spring when they do not grow outdoors.
The Flower Corridor is the best farming location. It spawns the most hydrangeas and has no enemies, making it safe for quick harvest runs.
Moonlit Forest is the most dangerous harvest location but offers the densest spawns alongside combat practice. Bring weapons and food for the enemies inside.
Cross-breeding with Nutrient Soil IV is the most reliable way to get Purple Hydrangeas in quantity. Set up multiple breeding pairs on your farm and check them every 5 days.
The Greenhouse bypasses the Summer/Autumn restriction, letting you grow hydrangeas in any season. Prioritize unlocking it at Expert Farmer if hydrangeas are a core part of your gifting strategy.
NPCs sometimes gift you hydrangeas when you talk to them, even before you reach high affection. This is a free source of flowers early in the game.
