Stamina overview
The stamina system in Crimson Desert governs defensive and movement actions during combat and exploration. A runic-style stamina meter appears on screen and depletes when performing specific actions. The key design principle is that normal (light) attacks do not consume stamina, meaning you can always fight back even when your stamina bar is empty. This separates the system from Soulslike games where stamina restricts all combat actions.
Actions that consume stamina
Action | Stamina Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Sprinting | Continuous drain | Stamina drains steadily while holding the run button. Walking is free. |
Dodging / Side-stepping | Per-use cost | Each dodge consumes a fixed portion. Provides invincibility frames during the animation. |
Shield blocking | Per-hit cost | Absorbing hits with a shield drains stamina per impact. A depleted bar causes guard break. |
Heavy attacks | Per-use cost | Powerful overhead and charged strikes cost stamina. Light attacks remain free. |
Swimming | Continuous drain | Swimming in water consumes stamina. Depletion while swimming causes drowning. |
Actions that do NOT consume stamina
Light attacks: The bread and butter of the combat system. Chain light combos freely regardless of stamina
Walking: Normal movement speed has no stamina cost
Climbing (basic): Standard climbing on designated surfaces is stamina-free
Interacting with NPCs and objects: Dialogue, shopping, and picking up items cost nothing
Stamina recovery
Stamina regenerates automatically when you stop performing stamina-draining actions. The recovery speed is moderate; after a dodge or sprint, you regain full stamina within a few seconds of standing still or walking. Recovery pauses while actively sprinting, dodging, or blocking.
Upgrading stamina
Your maximum stamina pool can be permanently increased through the Abyss Fragment progression system:
Abyss Fragment stat branches: Investing Fragments into the stamina branch on the perk tree increases your maximum stamina pool
Accessories: Certain rings and necklaces provide passive stamina increases when equipped
Cooking buffs: Meals like Explorer's Trail Mix grant temporary stamina boosts lasting 30 to 60 minutes. Prepared at any bonfire or at the Greymane Camp cooking station
Consumables: Consumable items such as Generous Assorted Flat Grilled Skewers restore both Health and Stamina mid-combat
Stamina in combat strategy
Because light attacks are free, the stamina system encourages an aggressive playstyle:
Use dodges sparingly. Each dodge costs stamina, so dodge only when necessary to avoid heavy enemy attacks
Mix light and heavy attacks. Light combos are unlimited, but finish a combo with a heavy attack for maximum damage when you can afford the stamina cost
Parrying (timed block) is more stamina-efficient than holding block. A successful parry staggers the enemy and uses less stamina than absorbing the full hit
Against bosses, manage your stamina bar carefully. Running out of stamina during a boss combo leaves you unable to dodge the follow-up hits
The Spartan Kick (kick command in combat) is a low-stamina way to create distance and knock enemies off ledges
Stamina in exploration
Outside of combat, stamina primarily affects sprinting and swimming. When exploring the open world:
Use mounts for long-distance travel instead of sprinting on foot to conserve stamina
Swimming stamina is limited. Plan water crossings carefully or look for bridges and boats
The grappling hook and gliding do not consume stamina, making them efficient traversal options for vertical movement
Tips
You are never helpless when out of stamina. Light attacks always work, so keep swinging
Prioritize upgrading stamina early in the perk tree if you rely on dodging and heavy attacks
Carry stamina-restoring food and consumables before boss encounters
Learn enemy attack patterns to minimize unnecessary dodges, preserving stamina for when it matters
The stamina system rewards calculated aggression over passive turtling behind a shield
