Overview
The Wolf is a dangerous pack predator found in the western regions of Pywel in Crimson Desert. Wolves dominate mountain territories through coordinated pack tactics, exceptional stamina, and high intelligence. They are among the more threatening wild animals players will encounter, particularly when traveling through mountainous areas at night. Wolves are also tied to several significant game systems, including hunting for resources and the legendary animal quest involving Black Fang.

Location and Habitat
Wolves primarily inhabit the western regions of Pywel, favoring mountain passes, dense forests, and elevated terrain. The Forest of Wolves in the Hernand region, located north of The Sage's Peak, is the most notable wolf territory and is the habitat of the legendary wolf Black Fang. Wolves travel in packs and are rarely encountered alone. If you spot one wolf, expect several more nearby.
Hunting Drops
Wolves are classified as smaller predators for hunting purposes, yielding different resources than large animals:
Drop | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Crafting material | Shared drop with deer and goats | |
Crafting material | Wolves produce Long Hair Hide | |
Meat | Cooking ingredient | Standard meat drop |
Behavior
Wolves are aggressive predators that will attack players on sight, especially when in packs. They coordinate their attacks, with some wolves flanking while others rush head-on. Their speed and stamina make them difficult to outrun on foot. When encountering a wolf pack, it is best to use ranged attacks to thin their numbers before engaging in melee combat. Wolves can be particularly dangerous during early game exploration when the player's gear is still limited.
Black Fang

The most famous wolf in Crimson Desert is Black Fang, a legendary wolf found in the Forest of Wolves within the Hernand region. Black Fang is significantly larger and more powerful than standard wolves, functioning as an optional boss encounter. Defeating Black Fang drops Leebur's Soul, a Key Item that permanently reveals the locations of all other legendary animals on the map. The House Celeste faction quest "Howls from North Gate" directs players to find and defeat Black Fang, though the wolf can also be encountered without accepting the quest.
Combat Strategy
Wolves attack in coordinated packs, with individual members circling to flank while others rush directly at the player. Their speed is one of their most dangerous traits, as a full pack can close distance before a player has time to prepare. The following strategies are effective against wolf packs:
Use ranged weapons first. A bow or hand cannon can eliminate one or two wolves before the pack reaches melee range, reducing the group's overall threat.
Focus on stragglers. Wolves that flank wide take slightly longer to reach you. Use this window to eliminate the forward rushers before the flankers arrive.
Avoid being surrounded. Keep your back against a cliff, wall, or tree when fighting a pack. Open terrain allows wolves to encircle you and attack from multiple directions simultaneously.
Use area-of-effect skills. Skills that sweep in an arc or hit multiple targets are highly effective against tightly grouped packs. A single well-timed sweep can stagger two or three wolves at once.
Nighttime Behavior
Wolves are significantly more aggressive after dark. Packs that stay near their territory during daylight hours will roam farther and patrol roads at night. Traveling through wolf-heavy areas like the Forest of Wolves or the western mountain passes after sunset increases the chance of encountering larger packs. If possible, plan your trips through these regions during the daytime, or bring enough healing items to sustain through multiple encounters.
Silver Fang
After defeating Black Fang, a second legendary wolf becomes available: Silver Fang, a white dire wolf that can be obtained as a permanent mount. Silver Fang resides in Howling Hollow, a cave located north of The Sage's Peak in the Hernand region. Silver Fang only spawns after Black Fang has been defeated.

To claim Silver Fang as a mount, follow these steps:
Travel to Howling Hollow and locate the white wolf inside the cave.
Defeat Silver Fang in combat. The wolf is a powerful opponent with high aggression.
Skin the defeated wolf to obtain the Fang of Silver Fang key item.
Visit any Witch (the closest is Elowen in The Witchwoods). Open the Craft Abyss Gear menu and navigate to the Special Item tab.
Craft the Sigil of Solidarity (Silver Fang) to permanently register the wolf as a summonable mount.
Silver Fang is not the fastest mount on flat roads compared to horses, but it excels in agility, climbing, and combat. The wolf can attack enemies while mounted, making it a strong option for players who want an offensive mount rather than a purely transport-focused one.
Pailune Direwolf
During the main story, players encounter the Pailune Direwolf as a mini-boss. This is a larger, more powerful variant of the standard wolf that is a scripted combat encounter. The Direwolf telegraphs its lunge attack with a crouching animation. Dodge the lunge, then punish with two to three light attacks before retreating. Repeat this pattern to defeat it without taking heavy damage.
Hunting Challenge
Wolves are connected to the When Animals Die Hunting Challenge. This challenge requires collecting Long Hair Hide through skinning, which wolves provide as a drop. Completing hunting challenges awards progress toward life achievements and trophies.
Tips
Always be prepared for multiple wolves when you hear howling in the distance. Packs can overwhelm unprepared players.
Use a bow to pick off wolves from a distance before they close the gap.
Wolf drops, particularly Long Hair Hide, are needed for the "When Animals Die" Hunting Challenge.
The legendary wolf Black Fang must be defeated twice for the encounter to fully resolve.
