Clothing and Outfits
Starsand Island features over 200 wearable pieces per body type, all designed for mixing and matching. The clothing system covers everything from casual everyday wear to traditional designs inspired by cultures around the world. Players can buy outfits from shops, craft them at the Sewing Table, earn them through quests and friendship milestones, or pick them up through DLC packs. Hats function as standalone wearables that pair with any hairstyle, and the game includes 10 ethnic-inspired outfits with matching traditional dance animations.
Unlocking the Wardrobe
Unlike most farming sims, Starsand Island does not give you full wardrobe access from the start. A physical wardrobe exists inside your house for basic outfit changes, but the real customization opens up after completing the Become an Apprentice Rancher questline. The unlock process goes like this:
Talk to Pastelle (the Rancher mentor) and accept the Apprentice Rancher quest.
Build a Rabbit Hutch using Fiber and Softwood Planks.
Purchase four baby rabbits and place them inside the hutch.
Wait for the rabbits to mature and start shedding Rabbit Fluff.
Deliver the Rabbit Fluff to Lunelle at her clothing boutique.
Lunelle rewards you with a new outfit and permanently unlocks two phone apps: the Wardrobe app and the Makeup app. From that point on, you can change your clothes and appearance anywhere on the island through your phone, without needing to return home.
The Wardrobe App
The Wardrobe app is your main interface for changing clothes. Open it from your phone to browse and equip items across several categories:
Category | Description |
|---|---|
Hats | Standalone headwear that can be worn with any hairstyle. Includes straw hats, caps, headbands, and decorative headpieces. |
Tops | Shirts, jackets, vests, blouses, and upper body garments. Range from casual t-shirts to formal and traditional designs. |
Bottoms | Pants, skirts, shorts, and lower body garments. Mix and match with any top for different looks. |
Full Sets | Complete outfits that replace both top and bottom slots. Includes traditional robes, dresses, jumpsuits, and themed costumes. |
Accessories | Additional wearable items that complement your outfit. See the Accessories article for details. |
Clothes purchased from shops or earned through gameplay automatically appear in your Wardrobe inventory. You can save outfit presets to quickly switch between different looks, which is handy for swapping between farming work clothes and something nicer for town visits.
Where to Get Clothing
Outfits come from several sources across the game. Some are available early, while others require significant progression to access.
Ethereal Styles (Lunelle's Boutique)
The primary clothing shop on Starsand Island, located on the south side of the plaza in Starsand Town. Lunelle operates the store from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM and stocks a rotating selection of outfits, hats, and accessories. Some pieces are limited-time items that disappear from the shop after their window closes.
The shop has a leveling system. Early on, Lunelle's stock is intentionally limited. To unlock higher-tier and more varied clothing, you need to buy out her current inventory. Once you purchase everything at the current level, the shop levels up and restocks with new, better items. This means spending money on pieces you might not love is sometimes necessary to progress the shop to the outfits you actually want.
Sewing Table Crafting
The Sewing Table lets you craft clothing using fabric and other materials. The textile production chain runs through three crafting stations:
Station | Input | Output |
|---|---|---|
Spinning Wheel | Fiber | Thread, Hemp Rope, Fishing Line, Carbon Line |
Loom | Thread, Wool, Colored Wool | White Fabric, Colored Fabrics (13 varieties), Leather, Linen, Velvet |
Sewing Table | Fabric, Patterns | Wearable clothing items and armor pieces |
Clothing crafting schematics are called patterns (as opposed to food recipes or furniture blueprints). Patterns can be purchased from shops or earned through quests. Craftable items include both cosmetic outfits and functional gear like the Turban, Long Shirt, Pants, Straw Hat, Bandage, and various armor sets (Head Armor, Chest Armor, Leg Armor).
The Sewing Table blueprint is available from Zerine's General Store for 700 Coins. You will also need the Spinning Wheel and Loom blueprints to produce fabric from raw fiber and wool.
Colored Fabric and the Dye System
To craft colored clothing, you need colored fabric. The primary method involves breeding colored animals. When sheep, rabbits, or alpacas breed, their offspring's color is random. Breed white and black sheep repeatedly until a colored lamb appears, then shear it for colored wool. The Loom processes colored wool into the corresponding colored fabric.
Seven colored wool types exist: Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Orange, Cyan, and Black. The Loom can also produce Purple and Rainbow fabrics. For a complete breakdown of the colored fabric pipeline and shortcuts through the Islandpedia stamp system, see the Dye System article.
Important note: You cannot dye wool or fur directly. There is no flower-to-dye crafting recipe in the current build despite some item tooltips hinting at it. Colored fabric comes exclusively from colored animal wool processed at the Loom.

Located on the north side of Starsand Town. Serena offers makeover services for hairstyles and facial makeup, not clothing sales. Open 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. | |
Quest Rewards | Completing major story quests, profession milestones, and certain NPC friendship events awards exclusive clothing pieces not available in any shop. |
Friendship Milestones | Maxing out friendship levels with specific villagers can reward unique outfits tied to that character. |
Seasonal Events | Limited-time outfits tied to in-game holidays and seasonal island events. These are only available during their event window. |
Leveling up through the StarNote app grants cosmetic rewards including clothing pieces at certain milestones. |
Clothing Styles
The wardrobe covers a wide range of aesthetic styles. Rather than locking players into one visual theme, the game draws from diverse influences:
Eastern fantasy designs: Flowing robes, hanfu-inspired pieces, and ornate traditional garments with Asian design motifs.
Western fantasy designs: Medieval-inspired tunics, adventurer outfits, and European-style formal wear.
Casual modern wear: T-shirts, jeans, shorts, and everyday clothing from around the world.
Traditional styles: Culturally inspired garments representing various traditions and regions.
Seasonal outfits: Holiday-themed costumes and seasonal wear that match in-game festivals.
Ethnic-Inspired Outfits and Dance Animations
One of the standout features of the clothing system is a set of 10 outfits inspired by different ethnic groups in China. Each of these outfits comes with its own matching traditional dance animation that your character performs as an emote. These dances are separate from the standard emote wheel and are tied specifically to wearing the corresponding outfit.
To use these dance animations, equip the ethnic outfit through the Wardrobe app, then access the emote system. The traditional dance associated with that outfit becomes available while wearing it. These outfits and their dances were part of the game from its Early Access launch and reflect the developer's goal of showcasing cultural diversity through gameplay.
DLC Fashion Packs
Several DLC packs add exclusive clothing, furniture, and vehicles to the game. DLC items are claimed through the Self-Service Terminal at the Community Center after completing the main quest "Return to the Cabin in the Woods."
DLC Pack | Fashion Content | Other Content |
|---|---|---|
Chinese New Year Furniture and Fashion | Neo-Chinese outfit collection inspired by festive themes and ink-wash landscape aesthetics | Traditional Chinese New Year furniture set with ornate latticework and elegant furnishings |
Classic European Furniture, Fashion and Vehicles | Elegant formal outfit with classic silhouettes and a dreamy color palette | Classical European furniture set and the Pumpkin Carriage vehicle |
Kickstarter Exclusive Pack | Exclusive outfits available only to Kickstarter backers | Additional exclusive items for backers |
Gender and Clothing
Players have asked on Steam community forums about cross-gender clothing options. The game's character customization system allows players to choose from the full range of wearable pieces regardless of character body type, giving everyone access to the complete 200+ piece wardrobe.
Tips
Unlock the Wardrobe app early. Prioritize the Apprentice Rancher quest so you get phone-based outfit changes as soon as possible. Using the physical wardrobe at home is inconvenient.
Buy out Lunelle's stock. Even if you do not love every piece, purchasing her current inventory forces the shop to level up and stock better items. Think of it as an investment.
Start breeding colored animals early. Colored wool is the only way to get colored fabric, and breeding outcomes are random. The sooner you start, the sooner you will have all seven wool colors for the Intermediate Rancher quest.
Grab limited-time pieces immediately. Some items at Ethereal Styles are only available for a short window. If you see something you like, buy it before it rotates out.
Save outfit presets. The Wardrobe app lets you save full outfit combinations. Set up presets for farming, town visits, and special occasions so you can switch instantly.
Check quest rewards. Some of the best clothing in the game comes from completing story quests and maxing NPC friendships, not from shops.
Build the full textile chain. You need all three stations (Spinning Wheel, Loom, Sewing Table) to go from raw fiber to finished clothing. Get the Sewing Table blueprint from Zerine for 700 Coins.
