Overview
The continent of Pywel is home to a wide range of dangerous animals that attack players on sight. Unlike hostile factions, which are organized groups of human or goblin enemies, hostile wildlife consists of predatory animals that roam specific habitats and defend their territory through natural aggression. These creatures range from common wolves and boars to massive bears, swift raptors, and exotic animals like crocodiles, rhinos, and elephants found in the more remote corners of the map.
Hostile wildlife serves several roles in the game. Predators create a persistent danger during open-world exploration, making travel between settlements risky for unprepared players. They also serve as the primary targets for the hunting system, dropping valuable crafting materials such as hides, bones, meat, and fangs that are used in cooking, equipment refinement, and crafting recipes.
Wildlife Categories
Animals in Crimson Desert fall into several size categories, each yielding different resources when hunted and skinned. The hunting system classifies animals by their physical characteristics, and the type of hide and bone dropped depends on this classification.
Category | Examples | Hide Type | Bone Type |
|---|---|---|---|
Small Mammals | Rabbits, foxes, small game | Thin Hide | Small Bone |
Medium Predators | Wolves, boars, deer, goats | Short Hair Hide / Long Hair Hide | Small Bone |
Giant Mammals | Bears, moose, bison | Thick Hide | Large Bone |
Giant Reptiles | Crocodiles, raptors | Sturdy Hide | Large Bone |
Megafauna | Elephants, rhinos | Thick Hide | Large Bone |
Wolves
Wolves are among the most common and dangerous predators players encounter, especially in the western regions of Pywel. They inhabit mountain passes, dense forests, and elevated terrain. The Forest of Wolves in the Hernand region, located north of The Sage's Peak, is the most notable wolf territory.
Wolves always travel in packs and are rarely encountered alone. If you spot one wolf, expect several more nearby. Their pack tactics involve coordination: some wolves flank from the sides while others rush head-on. Their speed and stamina make them difficult to outrun on foot, and they become particularly dangerous during early game exploration when the player's gear is limited.
Wolves drop Small Bone, Long Hair Hide, and Meat when skinned. Long Hair Hide is a crafting material used for refinement at the blacksmith and is required to upgrade coats, leather armor, and jewelry.
The most famous wolf in Crimson Desert is Black Fang, a legendary wolf found in the Forest of Wolves. Defeating Black Fang drops Leebur's Soul, a Key Item that permanently reveals the locations of all other legendary animals on the map.
Bears
Bears are giant mammal predators found primarily in forested regions across Pywel. They are larger and more durable than wolves, dealing heavy damage with their claw swipes and charges. Bears are slower than wolves but compensate with raw power. A single bear can be more dangerous than an entire wolf pack if the player is caught off guard.
Bears can be encountered as hostile wildlife or tamed as mounts. As wild enemies, they patrol forested areas and attack players who enter their territory. They tend to be solitary rather than pack animals, though occasionally two bears may share the same area.
When hunted and skinned, bears yield Thick Hide and Large Bone. Thick Hide is used for heavier armor refinements and gear upgrades. Bears are classified as giant mammals for hunting purposes.
Boars
Boars are aggressive medium-sized animals found throughout the wooded areas of Hernand and surrounding regions. They roam without fixed spawns but appear frequently in central Hernand and the Haunted Hill area. Boars are territorial and will charge players who get too close.
Boars yield Long Hair Hide and Large Bone when skinned, along with Meat for cooking. They are not as dangerous as wolves in groups, but a boar's charging attack can knock players off balance if they fail to dodge or block. Groups of deer, which share similar habitats, are not hostile but will flee when approached. Deer yield Short Hair Hide and 3 to 4 Meat per animal.
Raptors
Raptors are reptilian creatures that hunt in packs across various regions of Pywel. They are fast and agile, using their speed to close distance quickly and attack from unexpected angles. Raptors drop Sturdy Hide and Large Bone when skinned, making them valuable hunting targets for players who need giant reptile materials.
Wild raptors can also be tamed as mounts. Raptor mounts are the fastest land combat mounts in the game, ideal for hit-and-run tactics. Their special abilities focus on speed and movement, letting the rider dash in and out of combat range.
Exotic Wildlife
The more remote regions of Pywel contain larger and more exotic animals that serve as both challenging prey and potential mounts. These creatures are significantly tougher than standard wildlife and may require better gear before attempting to hunt them.
Animal | Region | Size Class | Notable Drops |
|---|---|---|---|
Crocodile | Wetlands and riverbanks | Giant Reptile | Sturdy Hide, Large Bone |
Rhino | Northern Pywel (near fast travel points) | Megafauna | Thick Hide, Large Bone |
Elephant | Northern Pywel | Megafauna | Thick Hide, Large Bone |
Moose | Cold mountainous areas (Pailune region) | Giant Mammal | Thick Hide, Large Bone |
Bison | Plains and open grasslands | Giant Mammal | Thick Hide, Large Bone |
Legendary Animals
Scattered across Pywel are legendary variants of standard wildlife. These are optional boss-tier encounters that are significantly more powerful than their normal counterparts. Legendary animals include the Silver Fang (wolf), a white bear, a white-scaled crocodile, and a white bison. These rare creatures appear in specific locations and are tied to Hunting Challenges. The tenth hunting challenge, The End of Myth, requires hunting and skinning all four of these legendary animals.
The easiest way to find legendary creatures is by building trust with merchants, particularly the Saddlery and Tannery merchants. Reaching 100 trust with these merchants gives the highest chance of receiving sighting documents that reveal legendary animal locations. The House Celeste faction quest "Howls from North Gate" also directs players to find the legendary wolf Black Fang.
Hunting and Skinning
After killing a hostile animal, interact with the carcass to skin it and collect materials. The resources obtained vary by animal type and size category. Hunting is a life skill in Crimson Desert that uses bows for ranged kills, ghillie suits for camouflage, and stealth mechanics to approach animals without being detected.
Equip a bow to hunt wildlife at range. Switching from melee weapons to the bow takes approximately three seconds.
Wear a ghillie suit for camouflage when stalking prey. Rushing toward animals causes them to flee.
Pets can loot items automatically. Getting a pet early helps with collecting drops from animals killed during exploration.
Hunting Challenges provide specific objectives tied to wildlife encounters, with 11 total challenges available.
Combat Strategies
Different animals require different tactical approaches. Here are general strategies for dealing with hostile wildlife.
Animal | Strategy |
|---|---|
Wolves | Use ranged attacks to thin the pack before engaging in melee. Target lone wolves first. Listen for howling, which signals a nearby pack. |
Bears | Stay mobile and avoid their charge attacks. Roll to the side when they lunge. Bears telegraph their swipes with obvious wind-up animations. |
Boars | Dodge or block their charging attack, then counter while they recover. Boars leave large openings after a failed charge. |
Raptors | Watch for flanking raptors when one attacks from the front. Area-of-effect weapons like greatswords work well against raptor packs. |
Megafauna | Bring healing items and upgraded weapons. These fights are drawn out and punish low damage output. Circle strafing helps avoid their heavy hits. |
Tips
Always be prepared for multiple wolves when you hear howling in the distance. Packs can overwhelm unprepared players.
Wolf drops, particularly Long Hair Hide, are valuable early-game crafting materials worth farming.
Hostile wildlife respawns after a period of time, making hunting grounds a renewable source of crafting materials.
Some wildlife can be tamed as mounts rather than killed. Bears, raptors, and direwolves all have mount variants available through the taming system.
Night travel through wilderness areas increases the chance of encountering aggressive predators. Stick to roads when possible during early game.
