Overview
The Bestiary in Crimson Desert is a comprehensive catalog of every creature inhabiting the continent of Pywel. The game tracks 401 confirmed creatures across its open world, ranging from common farm animals and fish to rare heteromorphs tied to the Abyss. Every creature encountered during exploration is logged in the Knowledge Codex, a massive in-game encyclopedia containing 2,921 entries across categories such as people, places, collectibles, bosses, and lifeforms.
Discovering new creatures fills in their Knowledge entry, which records the animal's description, habitat, and behavioral patterns. Players who invest time in hunting, fishing, and general exploration will gradually complete the bestiary. Collecting Knowledge entries also contributes toward achievements and can reveal useful information such as map markers for specific species locations.
How the Knowledge Codex Works
The Knowledge Codex is accessed through the game's menu system. When you encounter a new creature for the first time, its entry is automatically added to the relevant category. For fish, hovering over a species at a vendor's shop (such as Finley at the Hernand Fishing Shop) also registers knowledge of that species. Once you have gained knowledge of a fish species, you can select "Open Map" from the Knowledge menu to place a map marker showing where that species can be caught.
The Codex is organized into several broad categories. Creature-related categories include Land Animals, Birds, Aquatic Life, Insects and Arthropods, and Heteromorphs. Each entry provides a written description of the creature along with its known habitats. Completing entire subcategories may unlock special rewards or titles.

Land Animals
Pywel's land animals range from domesticated livestock found around farms and settlements to dangerous predators roaming the wilderness. Players can interact with land animals through hunting (killing and skinning for resources), taming (building trust to register as pets), or simply observing them to fill Knowledge entries. Domestic animals like cows and goats inhabit farms across all regions. Wild predators such as wolves and bears present genuine danger, especially at night or in packs.
Hunting land animals yields crafting resources. Small animals like deer, goats, and wolves drop Small Bone when skinned, while larger animals such as boars, bears, moose, rhinos, and elephants drop Large Bone. Hide quality also varies by animal: small mammals produce Thin Hide, large mammals produce Thick Hide, and large reptiles produce Sturdy Hide. The type of fur depends on the animal as well, with Short Hair Hide coming from cows, deer, and sheep, and Long Hair Hide from wolves and boars.
Fish and Aquatic Life
Pywel's waters contain around 51 varieties of fish across freshwater rivers and lakes, saltwater coasts, and deep ocean. Fishing is learned through the Observation mechanic by watching NPC fishermen, and it requires a Fishing Rod purchased from a vendor or crafted at a workshop. The earliest fishing location is the Nas River Fishing Dock, southeast of Hernand. Bait is not required to fish in Crimson Desert.
Fish range from common small species like Pond Loach and Small Rasbora (easy to catch, low value) to rare legendary fish like the Clockwork Fish, Golden Carp, and Golden Coelacanth, which can sell for around 10 silver each. All fish can be cleaned into Fish Fillet for use in cooking recipes, making fishing one of the most reliable ways to sustain your health throughout the game.
Insects and Butterflies
Pywel is home to a diverse collection of insects and arthropods. The butterfly population alone includes nine confirmed species across four habitat types: Tropical (Diana Fritillary, Buckeye, Tiger Mimic Queen, Orange-Barred Sulphur, Southern Blue Peacock), Forest (Swallowtail, Zebra Longwing), Meadow (White Streaked), and Garden (Orange Oakleaf). Players can catch some insects in shallow water using their bare hands, without needing special tools. Dragonflies spotted near streams, for example, can be grabbed directly.
Other arthropods include the Mountain Moth (nocturnal), various beetle species (Rhinoceros Beetle, Longhorn Beetle), the Centipede (venomous to small animals), and the Water Strider that glides across the surface of still ponds. These creatures fill Knowledge entries and add to the overall ecosystem, though most do not provide significant crafting resources.
Heteromorphs and Magical Beings
A small number of supernatural creatures exist in Pywel, categorized under the "Mysterious Cabin" section of the Knowledge Codex. These heteromorphs are tied to the Abyss and possess properties that set them apart from natural wildlife.
Abyss Heuklang: A peculiar animal with sleek, black, silky fur that moves almost noiselessly. Highly cautious by nature, but becomes loyal once it trusts its companion.
Choppy: A strange creature resembling a small white rabbit with large pointed ears. Hops on two legs and is considered a symbol of fortune.
Kuku Bird: A flightless bird with shrunken wings used primarily for balance. Despite its inability to fly, it is resourceful and surprisingly quick.
Woodland Spirit: Tall guardians of nature with bark-covered bodies and branch-like limbs. They protect the forests and react to environmental disturbances.
The first three heteromorphs can be encountered and tamed through the pet system, while Woodland Spirits are interactive environmental entities rather than tameable companions.
Legendary Animals
Scattered across Pywel are rare legendary animals that are far more powerful than their normal counterparts. The most notable is Black Fang, a legendary wolf found in the Forest of Wolves within the Hernand region. Defeating Black Fang drops Leebur's Soul, a Key Item that permanently reveals the locations of all other legendary animals on the map. Other legendary creatures mentioned in Hunting Challenges include a Silver Fang, a white bear, a white-scaled crocodile, and a white bison.
Legendary animals serve as optional boss-tier encounters. They are significantly tougher than standard wildlife and require proper gear and preparation to defeat. Tracking them down is part of the game's exploration endgame, and completing all legendary hunts contributes to the Ultimate Hunter trophy.
Hunting Challenges
The game features 11 Hunting Challenges that test the player's ability to track, hunt, and interact with specific animals. These challenges are unlocked by discovering Sealed Abyss Artifacts placed throughout the world. Completing all 11 challenges unlocks the Ultimate Hunter trophy. Challenges range from carrying five live birds ("Feather of the Earth") to hunting and skinning legendary variants of animals ("The End of Myth"). The "When Animals Die" challenge requires obtaining multiple hide types through hunting: Thin Hide, Thick Hide, Sturdy Hide, Short Hair Hide, and Long Hair Hide.
Tips for Completing the Bestiary
Check the Knowledge menu regularly. Open it from the pause screen to review which categories have gaps. Missing entries will show empty slots.
Visit vendors to learn fish species. Hovering over fish in a merchant's inventory registers their Knowledge entry, which then lets you use the map to find their fishing location.
Explore every region. Each area of Pywel hosts different species. Pailune's cold mountains contain moose, while the northern Crimson Desert region hosts rhinos and elephants.
Hunt at different times of day. Some creatures appear only during certain times. Night hunting may reveal nocturnal species that are absent during the day.
Follow questlines. Several faction quests introduce you to specific creatures, such as "Fang Without a Master" for the pet system or "Howls from North Gate" for Black Fang.
Check the Mysterious Cabin. Heteromorphs are rare and require visiting specific supernatural locations. The Mysterious Cabin houses unique creatures not found elsewhere.
